Volvo C40

Importing a used Volvo C40 from the USA

The Volvo C40 Recharge is the coupe-crossover sibling of the XC40 Recharge — a fully electric, fastback-roofed small SUV that was among Volvo's first EV-only models. It sold well in North America, and used examples are now appearing as early leases conclude. USCar Trader acts as your broker to source, verify and import a used C40 from the USA for buyers in Germany and the EU. Below is what the car is, how US examples differ, and what to check before you buy.

Generations at a glance

The C40 Recharge arrived for 2022 as an EV-only model on Volvo's CMA platform, sharing its mechanicals with the XC40 Recharge but wearing a lower, sloping roofline. Early cars were dual-motor all-wheel drive only. For 2023 Volvo added a single-motor version and, significantly, switched that single-motor car from front- to rear-wheel drive while fitting a larger battery — a meaningful improvement to range and efficiency. In Europe the model was later renamed EC40, but US cars retain the C40 name, so that is what you will find on American used lots. Most used US examples are 2022–2024 models.

Powertrain lineup

Two powertrains dominate. The twin-motor AWD car makes around 402 hp and 660 Nm from a roughly 75–79 kWh usable battery, with brisk 4.5-second 0–60 mph acceleration. The single-motor car, from 2023 onward, is rear-wheel drive with about 248 hp and a larger roughly 82 kWh usable pack, delivering the longest range in the line — up to around 297 miles EPA. Both use a 400-volt architecture and a CCS Combo 1 inlet in the US, with DC fast charging peaking near 150 kW on twin-motor cars and up to about 200 kW on the single-motor version. All C40s drive through single-speed reduction gearing.

Trims in the US market

The C40 is a five-door coupe-crossover only; there is no wagon or convertible variant. US trims centred on Core, Plus and Ultimate grades, with the higher levels adding a Harman Kardon audio system, a panoramic roof, pixel LED headlights, a heat pump on later cars and 20-inch wheels. Every C40 runs Volvo's Google-based Android Automotive infotainment with built-in Google Maps and Assistant.

The used market stateside

Used C40 availability is rising as fleet and lease cars return. Typical examples are 2022–2024 models with 10,000 to 45,000 miles, generally in good condition given the model's youth. The 2023-and-later single-motor RWD cars are the pragmatic pick for range and efficiency, while the twin-motor cars appeal to buyers wanting all-wheel-drive performance. As with any recent EV, verifying that software updates and open campaigns are complete is worthwhile.

Who should import one

A used C40 import suits a buyer who wants a compact, well-built, safety-focused electric crossover with distinctive styling and a genuinely modern Google-based interface. It is a fit for urban and commuting use rather than for those needing large cargo space or maximum rear headroom, which the sloping roof compromises slightly. For buyers who like the design and want something less common than the XC40, importing a used C40 from the USA makes sense.

How reliable is it?

The C40 shares its proven CMA hardware with the XC40, so the mechanical side is well understood. The most frequent complaints are software-related: early Android Automotive versions could be laggy or occasionally reboot, and some owners experienced 12-volt battery drain and charging-session glitches — most addressed by updates. Early twin-motor cars were less efficient than the later RWD single-motor car, which is worth bearing in mind when comparing range. Otherwise the C40 is straightforward: single-speed drive, no engine maintenance, and servicing limited to brake fluid, cabin filter, battery-coolant service and tyres. The regenerative braking reduces pad wear, but the heavy kerb weight means tyres are a recurring cost.

What US models do differently

US cars use a CCS Combo 1 inlet versus Europe's CCS Combo 2, resolved with the correct inlet or a certified adapter. US C40s carry amber rear turn signals and no rear fog lamp, both requiring conversion for German registration, and the cluster reads in miles. US and European cars are mechanically identical, and the Google-based system adapts to European maps and services, so the software transition is smooth. Note the European name change to EC40 does not affect a US-titled C40.

Seven steps to your import

The process runs from vehicle selection, to a VIN and origin check, to a secured escrow payment, then ocean freight to a European port, customs clearance on arrival, a TÜV individual inspection with any required modifications, and finally registration. USCar Trader coordinates the full chain as your intermediary and holds no dealer margin.

Customs, taxes and costs explained

Remember: no origin proof, no 0% duty – and 19% German import VAT is due on every import.

The C40 carries a "neutral" origin, so the EU import duty depends on the car's actual place of manufacture as shown by the VIN. The C40 is built in Ghent, Belgium (with some production in China), which means it is not a US-origin vehicle and does not qualify for the 0% rate under Regulations (EU) 2026/1455 and 2026/1461 — the standard passenger-car duty applies. Separately and in every case, the 19% German import VAT (Einfuhrumsatzsteuer) applies on the customs value. We state both charges openly, add no margin, and never describe the process as duty-free or guaranteed.

German TÜV and registration

Typical TÜV work includes fitting a compliant rear fog lamp, ensuring the rear lighting shows red rather than amber, aiming the headlights for right-hand traffic, and confirming the odometer and speedometer units. EVs generally pass smoothly. Documentation of completed software campaigns supports the file.

The buyer checklist

  • Decode the VIN to confirm drivetrain, battery size and model year.
  • Pull a Carfax or AutoCheck report for accidents and title branding.
  • Confirm software updates and any open campaigns are complete.
  • Request a battery state-of-health readout.
  • Verify a clean, non-salvage title.
  • Inspect the underbody and alloy wheels, especially on Northeast cars.
  • Check tyre condition given the car's weight.

Questions and answers

Is the Volvo C40 a good import from the USA?

Yes, for buyers who want a compact, safe and stylish electric crossover; US cars are plentiful and often well equipped.

Does the used C40 qualify for 0% EU import duty?

No. The C40 is built in Belgium (or China), so it is not US-origin and the standard duty applies; the 19% import VAT always applies.

What is the range of the Volvo C40?

The 2023-onward single-motor RWD car is rated up to about 297 miles EPA; the twin-motor AWD car offers less range but stronger performance.

Which C40 should I choose?

For range and efficiency the single-motor RWD car is the smarter pick; the twin-motor AWD car suits those wanting quicker acceleration and all-weather traction.

What are the most common C40 problems?

Mostly early infotainment glitches and occasional 12-volt battery drain, largely resolved through software updates.

Will the charging work in Germany?

After converting from CCS Combo 1 to CCS Combo 2, the C40 charges normally on European DC and AC networks.

Does USCar Trader sell the C40 directly?

No. We are an independent broker for used US vehicles and arrange the purchase, transport and clearance for you.
