Volkswagen Golf Alltrack

Importing a used Volkswagen Golf Alltrack from the USA

The Golf Alltrack was Volkswagen's rugged, all-wheel-drive answer to the wagon-loving buyer who wanted a bit of Audi allroad flavour on a Golf budget. In America it was a cult favourite among enthusiasts precisely because it paired a proper estate body with standard 4Motion and, unusually for the US, an available manual gearbox. Sold there only for a short window, it left behind a pool of well-kept, enthusiast-owned cars that make interesting import candidates. USCar Trader is an independent broker for used vehicles: we help you find, verify and ship a used Golf Alltrack, with no dealer margin on the car and no new-car sales.

Production years and key changes

The Alltrack is based on the seventh-generation (Mk7) Golf and, in the US, on the Golf SportWagen bodyshell. It reached American showrooms for the 2017 model year and ran through 2019 before Volkswagen pulled its wagons from the US line-up to focus on SUVs. That makes it effectively a single-generation US model, with a mild MY2018 update and minor trim shuffling. Compared with a standard SportWagen, the Alltrack adds raised ride height, underbody and wheel-arch cladding, standard all-wheel drive and Alltrack-specific interior trim — a recipe closely modelled on the Audi allroad idea.

What is under the hood

Every US Golf Alltrack uses the EA888 1.8-litre TSI turbocharged four-cylinder, producing around 170 hp and 199 lb-ft (about 270 Nm) of torque. Power goes to all four wheels through VW's 4Motion system with a Haldex-type coupling. Two transmissions were offered: a six-speed manual — a genuine rarity in the US wagon market and a big part of the car's enthusiast appeal — and a six-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic. The 4Motion system is front-biased in normal driving and sends torque rearward when slip is detected, which, combined with the extra ground clearance, gives the Alltrack real light-trail and winter capability.

Trims and body styles

The Alltrack is a five-door compact estate. US trims were S, SE and SEL, climbing through equipment such as keyless access, a larger touchscreen, panoramic sunroof, leather seating, adaptive cruise and Fender premium audio on higher grades. Even the base S is well equipped by European standards, and because Americans specced these cars generously, imported examples often carry desirable kit. The manual was generally tied to lower trims, which is worth knowing if a three-pedal car is your goal.

What the US market offers

Because it sold in modest numbers over just three model years, the Alltrack is not abundant — but the cars that exist tend to be loved. Expect 2017–2019 examples, many with moderate to higher mileage now, frequently owned by outdoorsy buyers in the north and Pacific Northwest. That regional bias means an underbody rust check is important on cars from salt-belt states. Manual-gearbox cars command a following and are worth sourcing from the larger US pool where they are easier to find than in Europe.

Who this import is for

An imported Golf Alltrack suits the buyer who wants a compact, practical, do-anything estate with genuine all-weather ability and, ideally, a manual — a combination that is scarce and getting scarcer. It is a sweet spot for someone who finds SUVs too tall and a standard Golf too low. It is less suited to buyers wanting big power or a diesel; the US car is petrol only. For a usable, characterful wagon, though, it is one of the more charming imports around.

Reliability: trouble spots to check

The Mk7 platform is mature and generally dependable, but there are recognised Golf Alltrack common problems tied to the EA888 engine. Watch for the water pump / thermostat housing (a known plastic wear item), PCV valve and, on some cars, carbon build-up on the intake valves typical of direct injection — a walnut-blast clean sorts this. The DSG needs its periodic mechatronic fluid service; skipped fluid changes are the main cause of DSG trouble. On manuals, check clutch wear. Haldex all-wheel-drive systems need their oil and filter serviced on schedule to stay healthy. Interior electrics and the touchscreen are mostly robust; verify the panoramic roof drains are clear to avoid leaks.

US vs. Europe differences

US cars are petrol 1.8T only (Europe also saw diesels and other outputs), with amber side markers, US headlight aiming and a rear fog-lamp setup that must be adapted for German approval. Instruments read in miles and the infotainment is US-region. Mechanically it is the same MQB Golf underneath, so servicing at any VW specialist in Germany is straightforward and parts are widely available.

How the import works

Select a suitable used car; run a VIN and origin check; place funds in escrow; ship by ocean freight (container or RoRo) to a port such as Bremerhaven; clear customs with origin-correct duty and 19% import VAT; pass the TÜV individual approval (Einzelabnahme); register and receive plates.

Import duty, VAT and fees

Bottom line: what matters is the factory shown by the VIN – proven US origin unlocks 0% duty. The 19% import VAT always applies.

Two separate items. The EU import duty on the vehicle can be 0% under Regulations (EU) 2026/1455 and 2026/1461 (in force since 1 July 2026, direct transport, valid until 31 December 2029) — but only with US origin proven by VIN and build plant. Golf Alltracks were built in Germany, so US origin normally cannot be shown and the standard passenger-car duty applies; we verify per VIN. Separately and in every case, the 19% German import VAT (Einfuhrumsatzsteuer) applies. We never claim duty-free status and take no margin on these public charges.

From modifications to registration

Typical work is lighting-related: rear fog lamp, headlight beam pattern and side markers. The odometer is registered in kilometres, and the car must pass the individual approval before it can be registered. Retaining US recall and service records helps the approval go smoothly.

Pre-buy inspection points

1) Decode the VIN and confirm trim and transmission. 2) Pull Carfax or AutoCheck for accidents and title brands. 3) Confirm a clean title. 4) Inspect the underbody for rust on salt-belt cars. 5) Check DSG/manual and Haldex service history. 6) Verify water-pump and PCV service status. 7) Test the panoramic roof, electronics and driver aids.

What buyers ask most

What engine does the US Golf Alltrack have?

The 1.8-litre EA888 TSI turbo four with around 170 hp and 4Motion all-wheel drive across all US model years.

Can I get a manual Golf Alltrack from the USA?

Yes. The US market offered a six-speed manual, which is one of the model's biggest draws and easier to find in America than in Europe.

Is the Golf Alltrack reliable?

The Mk7 platform is solid. Keep up with the water pump, DSG fluid and Haldex service and it is dependable; verify these on any car you buy.

Does it qualify for 0% import duty?

Only with provable US origin, which is unusual for German-built VWs. Expect standard duty; the 19% import VAT always applies separately.

Which model years were sold in the USA?

2017 through 2019, after which VW withdrew its wagons from the US market.

How practical is the cargo area?

Around 860 litres with the seats up and roughly 1,880 litres folded — very usable for a compact estate.

Is the Alltrack good in winter?

Yes. Standard 4Motion plus the raised ride height give it real all-weather and light-trail ability.

How long does the import take?

Typically several weeks, driven mainly by ocean freight and the TÜV individual approval booking.
