The third generation (2016 to 2023, chassis code AN130) is the volume seller you'll see most: a wider grille, a composite bed and a switch to a six-speed automatic. The fourth generation arrived for the 2024 model year on Toyota's TNGA-F ladder frame, sharing bones with the current Tundra and Land Cruiser.
Powertrain and equipment
Third-gen buyers usually chase the 3.5-litre 2GR-FKS V6, good for roughly 278 hp, paired with a six-speed automatic or a genuine six-speed manual on TRD trims. A 2.7-litre four-cylinder existed for base work trucks but is rare and slow.

Pre-purchase review
The Tacoma's reputation is earned, but it isn't flawless. The third-generation six-speed automatic drew widespread complaints for hesitation and lurching at low speed; many were improved by a TSB reflash, so ask whether the software update was applied. The 2GR-FKS V6 is fundamentally strong but can feel gutless below 2,000 rpm.
Germany and Europe
US Tacomas run amber front turn signals combined into the headlight cluster and typically lack a rear fog lamp, both of which the TÜV will flag.
