Toyota Avalon
Importing a used Toyota Avalon from the USA
The Toyota Avalon is the large, quiet luxury sedan Toyota built primarily for North America — think of it as a home-market flagship that was never really sold in Germany. That is its appeal to an importer: a genuinely refined, famously durable full-size car with a smooth V6 or an efficient hybrid, in a body you almost never see on European roads. Because Toyota assembled the Avalon in the United States, it also sits on the right side of the customs conversation. USCar Trader acts as an independent broker to help you locate, vet and ship a used Avalon; we are not a dealer and we add no vehicle margin.
Worth noting for planning: the Avalon was built at Toyota's Georgetown, Kentucky plant. A car with a VIN and plant that prove US origin can qualify for the 0% EU import duty — always subject to verification, and always alongside the 19% German import VAT, which we explain below.

Production years and key changes
The Avalon ran through five generations before Toyota retired it after 2022. The first (1995–1999) and second (2000–2004) established the formula: a stretched, plush front-drive sedan above the Camry. The third generation (2005–2012) grew more powerful, the fourth (2013–2018) adopted sharper styling and a proper hybrid option, and the fifth generation (2019–2022) brought the TNGA platform, a bolder grille, an available TRD sport version and, from 2021, optional all-wheel drive on four-cylinder cars. For most importers the fourth and fifth generations are the sweet spot for equipment and safety kit.
What is under the hood
The signature Avalon engine is Toyota's 3.5-litre V6 — the 2GR-FE and later the direct-injected 2GR-FKS — producing roughly 268 to 301 hp depending on year, driving the front wheels through a six-speed and later an eight-speed automatic. The hybrid pairs a 2.5-litre four-cylinder with Toyota's planetary hybrid system for a combined output around 215 hp and excellent economy, using a CVT-style transaxle. These are proven, low-drama powertrains; the V6 in particular has a strong reputation for high-mileage durability.
Trims and body styles
The Avalon is a four-door sedan only. US trims have included XLE, XSE, Limited, Touring and, on the last generation, the sport-tuned TRD. Equipment is generous by European standards: heated and ventilated leather seats, a JBL premium audio system, a large central touchscreen, adaptive cruise and the Toyota Safety Sense suite on later cars. Because American full-size buyers expect comfort, most Avalons you will find are well appointed.
What the US market offers
Avalons were bought largely by careful, long-term owners, which means the used pool skews toward well-maintained cars with complete service records — a real advantage for an importer. Typical examples show 60,000 to 180,000 km. Dry southern and western states again yield the cleanest underbodies. Hybrids are plentiful and appeal to buyers who want fuel economy; V6 cars are the smooth, effortless choice. We assess each car on history and inspection, not on Euro pricing.
Who this import is for
The Avalon suits a buyer who wants a large, supremely comfortable and reliable sedan that stands apart from the usual German executive cars — with the bonus of genuine US origin that can help on duty. It is an especially good fit for long-distance drivers and anyone who values low running-cost stress over badge prestige.

Reliability: trouble spots to check
The Avalon is one of the more dependable cars you can import, but it is not flawless. The 2GR V6 is robust; the main historical concern is an early rubber oil-supply hose on some 2GR engines that was subject to recall, so confirm it was addressed. Watch for gradual oil consumption on higher-mileage cars, occasional water-pump seepage, and — on older generations — dashboard material that can grow sticky or shiny in hot climates. Infotainment quirks and the usual 12-volt battery and brake-service items round out the list. Hybrid examples are generally trouble-free, though a very high-mileage hybrid battery should be assessed. None of this undermines the Avalon's core reputation; it simply means buying on records pays off.
US vs. Europe differences
US Avalons run amber front turn signals, US headlamps and no rear fog lamp, a miles-per-hour speedometer, and US navigation and units in the infotainment. Feature content is typically high. The mechanical package is identical to what you import, so the work needed for Germany is about lighting and documentation rather than engineering.
How the import works
The sequence is: select the car and arrange a remote or physical inspection; verify the VIN, build plant and full history; pay through escrow so funds release only on agreed terms; transport the car to the export port and book ocean freight (container or RoRo); land at a European port such as Bremerhaven or Rotterdam; clear customs with duty and import VAT; complete TÜV / individual approval (§21 StVZO) with any needed changes; and register in Germany. USCar Trader coordinates each step as your intermediary.
Import duty, VAT and fees
Bottom line: what matters is the factory shown by the VIN – proven US origin unlocks 0% duty. The 19% import VAT always applies.
Because the Avalon is US-built, a VIN and plant that prove US origin can qualify it for the 0% preferential EU import duty under Regulations (EU) 2026/1455 and 2026/1461 (in force since 1 July 2026, for direct transport, through 31 December 2029). We never present this as automatic or "duty-free": origin has to be documented, and without proof the standard 10% car duty applies. Separately and in every case, the 19% German import VAT (Einfuhrumsatzsteuer) applies, calculated on the value including any duty and freight. We check the likely outcome from the VIN before you commit.
From modifications to registration
Typical work covers fitting a rear fog lamp, converting the lighting to European standard, confirming a km/h speedometer and documenting the odometer reading in kilometres. The Avalon's safety systems are modern and well documented, so individual approval is usually smooth with the right paperwork and a clean inspection.
Pre-buy inspection points
- Decode the VIN and confirm generation, engine (V6 or hybrid) and US build plant.
- Pull a Carfax or AutoCheck history for accidents, title and odometer.
- Confirm a clean, non-salvage title; be cautious with rebuilt titles.
- Verify the 2GR oil-hose recall was completed on affected cars.
- Check for oil consumption and any coolant weeping on higher-mileage V6s.
- Favour dry southern/western-state cars for a rust-free body.
- On hybrids, review battery health and service records.
What buyers ask most
Is a used Toyota Avalon reliable?
Very. The 3.5 V6 and the hybrid are both proven; the main checks are the early 2GR oil-hose recall, oil consumption on high-mileage cars and, on hybrids, battery health.
Can the Avalon qualify for 0% EU import duty?
Yes, if the VIN and build plant prove US origin the 0% rate can apply. It is never guaranteed, and the 19% German import VAT always applies separately.
V6 or hybrid — which should I import?
The V6 is smoother and more effortless; the hybrid is far more economical and equally durable. Choose based on your mileage and priorities.
Which generation is best to import?
The fourth (2013–2018) and fifth (2019–2022) generations offer the best mix of equipment, safety technology and refinement.
Does the Avalon come with all-wheel drive?
Only some 2021-and-later four-cylinder cars offered AWD; the V6 and most Avalons are front-wheel drive.
How long does the import take?
Usually several weeks: ocean freight is commonly two to five weeks, plus port handling, customs clearance and German registration.
Will a US Avalon pass TÜV?
Yes, after fitting a rear fog lamp, converting the lighting and confirming metric speedometer and odometer readings.
Does USCar Trader sell me the car?
No. We act solely as an independent broker and intermediary for used vehicles; we hold no stock and add no vehicle margin.
