Toyota RAV4
Importing a used Toyota RAV4 from the USA
The RAV4 is Toyota's best-selling model in North America and, in most recent years, the best-selling non-pickup in the country. That volume creates a used market so large that finding a clean, well-optioned example is genuinely easy — including hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions that were scarce or differently specified in Europe. USCar Trader works strictly as an independent broker: we source a specific used RAV4 that already lived in the States and manage its route to Germany, from vetting to registration. There is no new-car sale and no manufacturer relationship involved.

From launch to today
Two generations dominate current imports. The XA40 (2013–2018) is the older, boxier compact SUV, offered as petrol and, from 2016, as a hybrid. The XA50 (2019–2025), built on the TNGA-K platform, is the one most buyers want: more rugged styling, a better chassis, and a much stronger hybrid system. Trail-oriented TRD Off-Road and the Adventure trim broadened its appeal. Because origin is neutral here, the VIN decides the build plant — RAV4s come from Kentucky, Ontario (Canada) and Japan depending on year and variant — and that classification matters for customs.
Engines and drivetrain in detail
The core petrol engine in the XA50 is the 2.5-litre A25A-FKS four-cylinder, around 203 hp, with an eight-speed automatic. The hybrid pairs that engine with THS-II for a combined 219 hp and adds electric rear-axle AWD (AWD-i). The standout is the RAV4 Prime plug-in hybrid (from 2021), producing a combined 302 hp — the quickest RAV4 Toyota has built and a configuration Europe knew as the PHEV but in different volumes. Front-wheel drive is standard on many petrol cars; mechanical or electronic AWD is widely available.
Trim levels and variants
The RAV4 is a five-door compact SUV. US trims include LE, XLE, XLE Premium, Adventure, TRD Off-Road and Limited, with hybrid and Prime versions layering on top (SE, XSE for the plug-in). Adventure and TRD cars bring higher ground clearance cues, unique wheels and a more capable AWD calibration; Limited focuses on comfort and technology.
Used availability in the USA
Availability is outstanding across the board, but hybrids and especially the Prime hold value strongly and move quickly, so timing matters. Typical import candidates are two-to-seven years old with 30,000 to 90,000 miles. Cars from dry states show little corrosion; salt-belt examples need an underbody look. We confirm accident history, title status and battery condition on electrified cars before proceeding.
When importing makes sense
Import a used Toyota RAV4 from the USA if you want a dependable, practical compact SUV with electrified options and proven durability. The Prime PHEV is the compelling case for enthusiasts who want real electric range and strong performance in one package. Families and high-mileage drivers who prioritise low running costs and easy parts supply are the other natural buyers.

Reliability and common problems
The RAV4 is a low-drama SUV, but a few points recur. Early XA50 petrol cars drew complaints about hesitant low-speed shifts from the eight-speed automatic; software updates improved it. Some 2019–2020 units had fuel-tank fill issues where the tank would not accept a full charge — worth asking about. On any RAV4, the 2.5 can use a little oil at high mileage, so check levels and records. Hybrids are very robust; budget eventually for the 12-volt battery and, much later, traction-battery health. Overall, Toyota RAV4 common problems are minor relative to the segment, and a documented service history is the best safeguard.
How US versions differ
US RAV4s use amber rear indicators in many years, omit the rear fog lamp, and run headlights not homologated for Europe. The cluster reads miles, and infotainment/DAB provisioning differs. Some US trims and colour combinations were never sold here. None of this prevents import — it is standard work during type approval.
From US purchase to registration
You choose a specific RAV4 and we vet it. We then run the VIN and origin check to establish the build plant and the correct customs classification. Funds pass through secure escrow rather than a direct wire to a seller. The vehicle is booked onto ocean freight to a North Sea port; on arrival we clear customs, arrange the individual technical approval (Einzelabnahme) at TUEV or DEKRA, and complete German registration.
Costs, duty and taxes at a glance
Key point: duty depends on the plant of build; only a VIN check secures the 0% rate. Import VAT of 19% applies regardless.
Keep the two charges separate. The customs import duty for passenger cars is normally 10 percent, but under Regulations (EU) 2026/1455 and 2026/1461 a 0 percent rate can apply to vehicles of provable US origin, in direct transport, for imports from 1 July 2026 to 31 December 2029. Since the RAV4's origin is neutral — and many were built in Canada or Japan — that 0 percent is never guaranteed and depends entirely on the plant the VIN shows plus the supporting documents. Separately and in every case, the 19 percent German import VAT (Einfuhrumsatzsteuer) applies to the landed value. We never claim duty-free import and add no hidden margin.
TÜV, approval and license plates
For approval a US RAV4 usually needs European-spec or converted headlights, a fitted and wired rear fog lamp, and odometer documentation in kilometres. Speedometer marking and tyre specifications are verified. After the inspector grants the individual approval, registration at the local authority follows as normal.
Pre-purchase checklist
Before you buy any RAV4: match the VIN to the title and the car; obtain a full Carfax or AutoCheck report for accidents and title brands; inspect the underbody, particularly on salt-belt cars; confirm service records and any recall completion (the fuel-tank campaign on early cars); verify a clean, non-salvage title; on hybrids and the Prime, ask about battery state and charging behaviour; and confirm the exact drivetrain and trim you are paying for.
Import FAQ
Why import a used Toyota RAV4 from the USA?
The US market offers huge supply and electrified variants like the Prime PHEV in configurations that are hard to find here, all with strong parts availability.
Does the 0 percent EU customs duty apply to every RAV4?
No. It applies only with provable US origin under the 2026 regulations. Many RAV4s are built in Canada or Japan, so the rate depends on the VIN-confirmed plant.
Is the 19 percent import VAT always charged?
Yes. The German Einfuhrumsatzsteuer of 19 percent is always due, regardless of the duty rate.
Which RAV4 version is most desirable?
The RAV4 Prime plug-in hybrid, thanks to its 302 hp combined output and usable electric range.
How reliable is the RAV4?
Very reliable; the main watch points are early eight-speed shift behaviour and the fuel-tank recall on some 2019–2020 cars, both addressable.
What changes are needed for TUEV?
Typically headlights, a rear fog lamp and kilometre-based odometer documentation, depending on model year.
Can you source a hybrid specifically?
Yes, we can target petrol, hybrid or Prime versions and confirm battery condition before purchase.
How is my payment protected?
All funds move through secure escrow, never a direct transfer to an unknown seller.
