Model profile
The lineage matters. The first generation arrived for 2013 as a joint Toyota-Subaru project, sold in America as the Scion FR-S and, after Scion folded, as the Toyota 86 from 2017. That car used the 2.0-litre FA20 boxer with around 205 hp. The second generation, badged GR86 under Toyota's Gazoo Racing performance sub-brand, launched for the 2022 model year on a stiffer chassis.
Powertrain and equipment
The current GR86 (chassis ZN8) is powered by a 2.4-litre naturally aspirated FA24 flat-four boxer producing about 228 hp and 184 lb-ft (250 Nm) of torque, a meaningful jump over the old 2.0. That extra torque cures the mid-range flat spot that dogged the first car.
The GR86 is offered solely as a two-door coupe. US trim structure is simple: a base grade and a Premium grade, the latter adding items such as adaptive LED headlights, heated seats, a leather-and-Alcantara-style interior and larger wheels.

GR86 supply in America is good, with 2022 and later cars dominating the used listings at generally low-to-moderate mileage.
The GR86 is for the driver who prioritises feel over outright power: someone who wants a compact rear-drive coupe, a manual gearbox and a mechanical limited-slip diff at a sensible entry point.

Pre-purchase review
The GR86 is largely dependable, but there are known GR86 common problems to check. The FA24 boxer, like the earlier FA20, can consume some oil, so verify the level and the owner's top-up habits; low oil in a hard-driven boxer is a serious risk.
Germany and Europe
US GR86s differ mainly in lighting and instrumentation.
Expect the TÜV individual approval to require correcting the headlight beam pattern, fitting or activating a rear fog lamp, and documenting the odometer reading, with the speedometer showing km/h.
