Tesla Model S

Importing a used Tesla Model S from the USA

The Model S is the car that made Tesla a serious carmaker, and it remains a benchmark for range, straight-line pace and over-the-air software. Prices and availability in the American used market differ markedly from Europe, and specific configurations — early single-motor cars, particular colours, or the tri-motor Plaid — are far easier to find stateside. Importing a used Tesla Model S from the USA lets a German or EU buyer target exactly the spec they want. USCar Trader works as an independent broker: we locate, vet and ship the car for you and take no margin on the vehicle itself.

Generations at a glance

The Model S launched in 2012 as a full-size electric liftback and has evolved through the same body with three clear phases. The original "classic" cars up to 2016 wear a body-coloured nose cone. The 2016 facelift replaced it with the smooth closed fascia and updated the interior electronics. The most significant change came in 2021, when Tesla overhauled the cabin with a landscape 17-inch screen, an optional yoke steering wheel, and the introduction of the three-motor Plaid. Throughout, Tesla has continuously improved the battery, motors and software, so two cars of the same body can differ substantially under the skin depending on build date.

Powertrain lineup

Modern Model S cars are dual-motor all-wheel drive; the Long Range pairs front and rear motors for roughly 405 miles of EPA range, while the Plaid adds a second rear motor for a tri-motor layout, around 1,020 hp and a 0-60 mph time near 1.99 seconds. Earlier cars offered rear-drive single-motor versions (60, 75, S 85) and the P100D flagship of its day. The usable battery on later cars sits near 100 kWh. There is no gearbox in the conventional sense — a single-speed reduction drive per axle — and regenerative braking is strong. Charging on European Superchargers and CCS is straightforward on cars fitted with the right port, which you should confirm before buying.

Trims in the US market

The Model S has always been a five-door liftback; there is no coupe, estate or SUV version (that role falls to the Model X). Trim naming has shifted over the years from numeric battery labels (75D, 100D) to today's Long Range and Plaid. A rare seven-seat option with rear-facing child seats existed on early cars. Interior choices include the pre-2021 round-wheel dashboard and the post-2021 minimalist cabin with the horizontal display and, on many cars, the yoke.

The used market stateside

The USA has by far the deepest pool of used Model S cars, spanning a decade of production, so you can choose between an affordable higher-mileage classic and a nearly new Plaid. California, Florida and Texas carry the largest inventories. Typical used cars run from around 30,000 to well over 100,000 miles; because these are electric, mileage matters less than battery health and charging habits. Look closely at cars from ride-share or high-cycle use, and treat any salvage-title example with caution given the cost of battery and structural repairs. We list no Euro prices here — the value lies in matching the exact configuration and battery condition you want.

Who should import one

A US Model S import suits the buyer who wants a specific year, colour or the Plaid performance version at a spec that is scarce or unavailable in Europe, and who is comfortable with an electric flagship. It rewards drivers who cover long distances and value the mature Supercharger network. If you need seven full-size seats or extreme cargo flexibility you would look at the Model X, but for a fast, long-range luxury liftback the Model S remains a compelling reason to import.

How reliable is it?

The Model S is mechanically simple but has known trouble spots worth checking. Early cars can suffer from door-handle mechanism failures, air-suspension faults, and the notorious yellow banding around the edge of the main screen (usually correctable). Some 85 kWh packs experienced degradation or, rarely, failure; a genuine battery health check is essential. Media control unit (MCU) eMMC memory wear affected pre-2018 cars and can be remedied. Panel-gap and trim inconsistencies are a Tesla trait rather than a defect. On the plus side, the drivetrain itself is durable, and a well-maintained car with a healthy pack and documented service can run for years. Always ask for the battery degradation figure and charging history — this is the single most important reliability indicator on any used Tesla Model S.

What US models do differently

US cars are configured for the American market: the lighting is aimed for right-hand traffic, there is no rear fog lamp as ECE requires, and the software defaults to miles and Fahrenheit (switchable). Older US cars may carry a different charge port; many can be adapted for European Supercharging and CCS, but you must verify this per car. Autopilot and connectivity features are tied to the account and region, so confirm what transfers. Feature content on US trims is often generous.

Seven steps to your import

Select the exact configuration and agree terms; verify the VIN and confirm the Fremont build and battery/port details; place funds in escrow; arrange inland transport and ocean freight; clear EU customs; present the car for TÜV and individual approval with the necessary lighting and documentation changes; then register locally. USCar Trader manages each stage so the car moves smoothly from the US seller to your German plate.

Customs, taxes and costs explained

Key point: duty depends on the plant of build; only a VIN check secures the 0% rate. Import VAT of 19% applies regardless.

Keep the two charges separate. Import duty first: the Model S is built at Tesla's Fremont, California plant, so a US origin proven through the VIN can qualify the car for the 0% EU import duty under Regulations (EU) 2026/1455 and 2026/1461 — in force since 1 July 2026 for directly transported goods, valid until 31 December 2029 — but the rate is only ever confirmed on the documented origin and is never guaranteed. Second, the 19% German import VAT (Einfuhrumsatzsteuer) always applies, on any origin, calculated on the customs value plus duty and freight. There is no dealer margin: you pay the car, shipping, statutory taxes and our brokerage.

German TÜV and registration

Typical approval items include fitting or enabling a rear fog lamp, adapting or replacing the headlights for ECE compliance, confirming tyre ratings, and documenting the odometer in kilometres. Tesla's core safety systems generally satisfy inspectors once paperwork is complete. After individual approval the car registers normally, and CCS-capable cars slot straight into the European charging network.

The buyer checklist

Decode the VIN and confirm the Fremont build and model variant. Obtain the battery health and degradation report and full charging history. Pull a Carfax or AutoCheck record and read every entry. Confirm a clean, non-salvage title. Check the charge port type and European charging compatibility. Verify the screen, door handles and suspension on older cars. Have an independent inspector confirm no flood or structural damage.

Questions and answers

Can a US Tesla Model S charge on European Superchargers?

Many can once the correct port or adapter is in place; you must confirm the charge port and CCS compatibility for the specific car before buying.

Does the Model S qualify for 0% EU import duty?

It may, because it is built in Fremont, California. US origin proven via the VIN can enable the 0% rate under the 2026 EU regulations, but this is confirmed only on the documents and never guaranteed.

Do I always pay the 19% import VAT?

Yes. The 19% Einfuhrumsatzsteuer applies to every import regardless of origin and is calculated separately from any customs duty.

How do I judge the battery on a used Model S?

Request the degradation figure and charging history; a healthy pack that has not been routinely fast-charged to full is the key indicator of a good buy.

What is the difference between Long Range and Plaid?

The Long Range is a dual-motor car with around 405 miles of range, while the Plaid adds a third motor for roughly 1,020 hp and a sub-two-second 0-60 time.

Will a US Model S pass TÜV?

Yes, after lighting is brought to ECE standard and documentation is assembled during the individual approval.

Is the yoke steering wheel a problem for registration?

The yoke itself is not an approval blocker; inspectors focus on lighting, safety and documentation rather than wheel shape.

Is USCar Trader a Tesla dealer?

No. USCar Trader is an independent broker for used US vehicles, with no manufacturer partnership and no margin on the car.
