Subaru Ascent
Importing a used Subaru Ascent from the USA
The Subaru Ascent is the brand's biggest vehicle — a three-row, seven- or eight-seat family SUV built specifically for North America and never sold new in Europe. That combination of size, standard all-wheel drive and, importantly, a US factory makes it one of the more interesting import candidates for a German buyer who wants a genuinely large Subaru. If you want to import a used Subaru Ascent from the USA, the good news starts at the VIN: the Ascent is assembled in Indiana, which puts it in a favourable position on customs when origin is properly documented.

From launch to today
The Ascent launched for the 2019 model year on the Subaru Global Platform, replacing the older Tribeca in Subaru's line-up after a long gap in the large-SUV segment. It received a mid-cycle refresh for the 2023 model year, with revised styling front and rear, an updated interior and a larger available touchscreen. Throughout, the recipe has stayed consistent: three rows, turbocharged boxer power and Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive as standard. For a used import, the pre- and post-2023 cars differ mainly in looks and infotainment rather than mechanicals.
Engines and drivetrain in detail
Every Ascent uses the FA24 2.4-litre turbocharged flat-four (boxer) engine, producing about 260 hp and 277 lb-ft of torque — the latter available low in the rev range, which suits a heavy family SUV. Drive goes through a Lineartronic CVT to Subaru's signature Symmetrical AWD. That drivetrain gives the Ascent genuine all-weather ability and a 5,000-lb (about 2,270 kg) towing rating on properly equipped models. The boxer layout keeps the centre of gravity low, and X-Mode adds low-traction driving modes. There is no V6 and no diesel; the 2.4T is the sole engine, which simplifies buying used.
Trim levels and variants
The Ascent is offered only as a three-row SUV, in trims that broadly run base, Premium, Onyx Edition, Limited and Touring. Eight-seat (bench) and seven-seat (captain's chairs) configurations are available depending on trim. Higher grades add leather, a panoramic roof, a larger portrait touchscreen and more driver-assist features, while the Onyx Edition brings darkened exterior trim and water-repellent upholstery. All trims keep the same engine and AWD, so trim choice is about equipment and seating rather than performance.
Used availability in the USA
Ascents are common family SUVs across the US, so used supply is healthy from 2019 onwards. Typical examples run 30,000 to 100,000 miles, with well-kept 2019–2022 cars and lightly used post-refresh 2023–2024 models both readily available. Because it is a family hauler, look closely at the interior wear, third row and cargo area rather than just the drivetrain. Cars from dry southern and western states avoid road-salt corrosion; northern examples should be checked underneath. A full service history is valuable given the CVT and turbo.
When importing makes sense
The Ascent suits a buyer who needs three rows, wants standard all-wheel drive and serious towing, and specifically likes the Subaru boxer character — something no European-market Subaru of this size offers. It rewards families and outdoor users who value all-weather traction over outright luxury. Because it is US-built, it is also one of the Subarus most likely to benefit from origin-based customs treatment, which strengthens the case for importing rather than buying a smaller EU-market model.

Reliability and common problems
The Ascent is generally solid but has a few known weak points worth checking. The most discussed is the Lineartronic CVT on early 2019 cars, which was subject to service actions; confirm software updates and any transmission work were done. The FA24 turbo boxer is more robust than some older Subaru fours but still benefits from strict oil-change discipline, and turbo health should be verified on high-mileage cars. Owners have reported occasional battery drain, windshield cracking (a long-standing Subaru complaint) and infotainment quirks on the pre-refresh screen. EyeSight camera-based driver assist is reliable but sensitive to windscreen replacement quality. A car with a documented service record and completed recalls is far safer than a cheap one without paperwork.
How US versions differ
US Ascents use a miles-per-hour cluster, US lighting with amber indicators and no rear fog lamp, and US-market EyeSight and telematics calibration. Being North-America-only, there is no European homologation to fall back on, so the individual approval does the work. Mechanically the boxer-and-AWD hardware is familiar Subaru engineering, which helps with servicing, but the connected-services and radio bands are US-specific.
From US purchase to registration
The route is: select the trim and seating you want, verify the VIN and confirm the Indiana build, agree terms through escrow, ship by roll-on/roll-off or container, clear EU customs, present the car for TÜV and individual approval (Einzelabnahme), and register it. Because the Ascent is US-built, documenting origin at customs is a key early step.
Costs, duty and taxes at a glance
Bottom line: what matters is the factory shown by the VIN – proven US origin unlocks 0% duty. The 19% import VAT always applies.
The Ascent is assembled in Lafayette, Indiana, and its VIN typically begins with 4S4 — a US build. That is the favourable case: under Regulations (EU) 2026/1455 and 2026/1461, provable US origin (confirmed by VIN and plant, with direct transport, valid since 1 July 2026 through 31 December 2029) can enable the 0% EU import duty. That is a genuine advantage of importing a US-built Subaru rather than a car assembled elsewhere. It is not automatic, though — the origin must be provable, and we never guarantee duty-free status in advance. In every case, whether or not the 0% applies, the 19% German import VAT (Einfuhrumsatzsteuer) is charged separately and always applies.
TÜV, approval and license plates
Typical approval work includes fitting a rear fog lamp, converting headlights and indicators to EU spec, a km/h speedometer, and confirming lighting and safety systems. The odometer reading is recorded for the papers. Emissions compliance for the FA24 is generally manageable, but each item is verified during individual approval.
Pre-purchase checklist
Confirm the VIN begins with a US code so origin can support the customs case. Pull a full Carfax or AutoCheck history for accidents and recalls. Verify the CVT software and any transmission service, especially on 2019 cars. Check for windshield cracks and prior replacements affecting EyeSight. Inspect the third row, seats and cargo area for family wear. Confirm the title is clean, not salvage or rebuilt. Check the underbody on any northern-state car.
