The Pontiac Solstice is one of those American cars that Europeans rarely see, which is a shame because it is a proper compact roadster with an eager rear-wheel-drive chassis.

The Solstice arrived for the 2006 model year on GM's rear-drive Kappa platform, sharing its bones with the Saturn Sky and the Opel GT. It was sold as a two-seat convertible roadster through the 2009 model year, with a rare hardtop Coupe joining very late in 2009 before production stopped.
Powertrain and equipment
The base Solstice uses GM's 2.4-litre Ecotec LE5 four-cylinder producing around 173 hp, driving the rear wheels through a five-speed manual or an optional five-speed automatic.
The line-up is simple: base Solstice roadster, the turbocharged GXP roadster, and the late hardtop Coupe available in both engine forms. Equipment was modest by design, with a focus on the driving experience rather than luxury.

Pre-purchase review
The Solstice is mechanically straightforward, and the Ecotec engines are generally durable, but there are documented Solstice common problems to check. The turbocharged LNF in the GXP is known for high-pressure fuel pump wear and for carbon build-up on the intake valves due to direct injection, which can need occasional cleaning. Timing chain wear on higher-mileage Ecotecs is worth inspecting.
Germany and Europe
US Solstice cars use US lighting with amber front and rear indicators and no dedicated rear fog lamp.
Expect headlight adaptation to an ECE beam pattern, fitment of a rear fog lamp, adjustment or masking of amber markers where required, and a speedometer that shows km/h.
