Generations at a glance

Nissan launched the first-generation LEAF (chassis code ZE0) in December 2010 as one of the first mass-produced battery-electric cars. US-market cars were assembled at Nissan's plant in Smyrna, Tennessee from 2013 onward, which is worth remembering when you check a VIN for origin. The first generation ran through 2017 and started with a 24 kWh battery, later gaining a 30 kWh pack for 2016 and 2017 that lifted EPA range to roughly 107 miles.

The second generation (ZE1) arrived for the 2018 model year with sharper styling, a 40 kWh battery and around 150 miles of EPA range. In 2019 Nissan added the LEAF Plus, badged e+ in some markets, with a 62 kWh pack and up to about 215 to 226 miles. That second-generation car stayed on sale in the US into the mid-2020s, so the used market covers everything from bargain commuter runabouts to longer-range Plus models.

Powertrain lineup

Every LEAF is front-wheel drive with a single synchronous electric motor. The early 24 and 30 kWh cars produced 80 kW (about 107 hp) and 280 Nm. The 40 kWh second-generation car steps up to 110 kW (147 hp), and the 62 kWh LEAF Plus delivers 160 kW (214 hp) with 340 Nm, which makes it noticeably brisker off the line. There is no conventional gearbox: a single-speed reduction drive sends power to the front wheels, and regenerative braking, including Nissan's one-pedal e-Pedal mode on ZE1 cars, recovers energy on lift-off.

The single most important technical point for a European buyer is charging. US LEAFs use the CHAdeMO standard for DC fast charging, not the CCS plug that dominates Europe, and AC charging runs through a J1772 (Type 1) inlet rather than the Type 2 socket common at home here. Early cars had a 3.3 kW onboard charger; later cars moved to 6.6 kW. None of the LEAF generations use active liquid cooling for the battery, which shapes both charging behaviour and long-term degradation.

Trims in the US market

The LEAF is a five-door C-segment hatchback throughout its life, with no wagon, sedan or SUV variant. US trims run S, SV and SL, with the longer-range cars badged S Plus, SV Plus and SL Plus. Higher trims add heated seats and a heated steering wheel, the Bose audio system, ProPILOT Assist driver aids on later cars, LED headlights and an around-view camera. Because Nissan optioned the US cars slightly differently from European ones, checking the exact build sheet matters when you order.

The used market stateside

America bought a lot of LEAFs, especially in California and other coastal states, so supply of clean used examples is genuinely strong. First-generation cars are plentiful and cheap in dollar terms, but their air-cooled batteries mean state of health varies widely; two identical-looking 2015 cars can have very different remaining range. Second-generation 40 kWh and 62 kWh cars command more but offer usable everyday range. Sun-belt cars can show more battery wear from heat, so a battery health readout (the dashboard bars plus a proper state-of-health check) is essential before buying.

Who should import one

A used LEAF import makes most sense if you want an affordable second car or urban commuter and you can live with CHAdeMO fast charging, which is becoming rarer at new European sites. Buyers chasing a specific colour, a well-kept low-mileage Plus, or simply better value than the local market can find it in the American pool. How reliable is it?

The LEAF's biggest ownership variable is battery degradation. Because none of the generations use liquid cooling, capacity loss accelerates in hot climates and after frequent DC fast charging, a behaviour owners nicknamed "Rapidgate", where repeated rapid charges throttle the charging speed to protect the pack. Beyond the battery, the 12-volt auxiliary battery can fail early and trigger odd electronic faults, the brake actuator was subject to recalls on some cars, and the reduction gear can develop a whine. Mechanically the LEAF is otherwise simple and durable, with few of the wear items a combustion car brings.

What US models do differently

The headline difference is charging: CHAdeMO fast charging and a J1772 AC inlet instead of the CCS and Type 2 standards used across Europe. You will want a Type 1-to-Type 2 adapter cable for home and public AC charging, and you should map out CHAdeMO availability near you. Other differences include a miles-per-hour speedometer, US lighting that usually needs a rear fog lamp added and the headlights adjusted for right-hand traffic, and region-locked NissanConnect telematics. The car itself is otherwise the same EV under the skin.

Seven steps to your import

The process runs in a clear sequence. First we confirm the exact car and check the VIN for specification and plant origin. Next comes purchase and an independent inspection in the US, including a battery health check. We then handle the US export paperwork and title, book ocean freight to a European port (usually Bremerhaven), and clear the car through German customs. Customs, taxes and costs explained

In short: the 0% duty rate applies only with documented US origin (VIN/plant) – German import VAT of 19% is always due.

Two charges matter at the border. Import duty can be 0% under Regulations (EU) 2026/1455 and 2026/1461, in force since 1 July 2026, requiring direct transport and running until 31 December 2029, but only where US origin is provable from the VIN and plant code. US-market LEAFs are frequently built in Smyrna, Tennessee, which supports a US-origin case, yet every VIN must be verified individually; we never treat duty as guaranteed or duty-free. Separately, and always, 19% German import VAT applies to the customs value. Budget also for ocean freight, marine insurance, port handling and registration.

German TÜV and registration

A US LEAF needs a handful of changes for German approval: a rear fog lamp, correctly aimed headlights suited to right-hand traffic, and a speedometer that can be read in km/h. Because it is an EV, there are no emissions retrofits to worry about. Individual approval under the usual paragraph 21 route documents the car for the registration office. Practical extras include the right charging adapters so the car works with German home and public infrastructure.

The buyer checklist

Before you buy, confirm: the battery state of health and number of capacity bars; which charging standard and onboard charger the car has; a clean title with no branded or salvage history; accident and structural checks; tyre age and condition; the health of the 12-volt battery; and up-to-date software. A documented service history and a recent independent inspection turn a gamble into a sound purchase.
