Two generations dominate the used market. The second-generation D40 ran from the 2005 model year through 2021 and is the truck most buyers picture: a rugged, slightly old-school pickup with a long production life and a reputation for taking abuse.
Powertrain and equipment
The classic D40 uses the 4.0-litre VQ40DE V6 producing 261 hp and 281 lb-ft, paired with a five-speed automatic. Early base trucks could be had with a 2.5-litre QR25DE four-cylinder (around 152 hp), but the V6 is what almost everyone imports and what the European market expects.
US Frontiers come as a King Cab (extended cab with rear-hinged half doors) or the far more common Crew Cab with four full doors. Bed lengths are roughly five or six feet depending on cab.

Pre-purchase review
The Frontier's reputation for durability is largely earned, but the second-generation D40 has one notorious flaw. The factory radiator can develop an internal crack that lets coolant seep into the automatic transmission cooler circuit, mixing with the ATF into a pink sludge owners call the "strawberry milkshake of death." Once it happens, the transmission is usually ruined.
Germany and Europe
US-market Frontiers run amber front turn signals and lack a rear fog lamp, and the speedometer is primary in mph. Tyre pressure and service labels are in US units.
Typical work before approval: converting or adding rear fog and rear reflector provisions, confirming amber-to-compliant lighting where required, and documenting the odometer in kilometres or noting the mph/km discrepancy.
