Choose a specific vehicle. Where data is available, its detail page shows the import cost calculation. We assess any possible duty benefit with you before purchase.

Important: A 0% EU import-duty rate may be available for a vehicle covered by Regulation (EU) 2026/1455 that has US origin and is imported directly into the EU. CETA may apply to a vehicle with preferential Canadian origin. Whether the requirements are met is assessed for the individual case. Model profile

Model history and generations

Generations at a glance

Four generations, each with its own character. The original NA (1989–1997) introduced the pop-up-headlight formula: light, rear-wheel drive, near-perfect balance. The NB (1998–2005) dropped the pop-ups and gained a stiffer shell. The NC (2006–2015) grew slightly, shared parts with the RX-8 platform, and was the first Miata offered with the PRHT retractable hardtop.

Engines, drivetrain and trims

Powertrain lineup

US Miatas are rear-wheel drive without exception. The NA used the 1.6-litre B6ZE (around 116 hp) and later the 1.8-litre BP (roughly 128–140 hp). The NB carried the 1.8 forward with 142–146 hp.

Trims in the US market

Body styles are simple: a folding soft-top roadster throughout, plus the NC's PRHT and the ND's RF power hardtop. US trim ladders vary by generation. The NC ran SV, Sport, Touring and Grand Touring.

Vehicle selection

North American market and suitability

The used market stateside

Supply is the headline. NC and ND cars are plentiful across the United States, and the enthusiast culture means many are well documented on forums and in service records.

Who should import one

If you want a lightweight, naturally aspirated, rear-drive roadster with a manual gearbox and honest steering, the MX-5 is the reference point.

Pre-purchase review

Model-specific inspection points

Inspection plan for this model

For the Mazda MX-5 Miata, the agreed inspection plan focuses in particular on vehicle history, visible body and underbody condition, fluid leaks, warning messages, tyres, brakes and accessible suspension components. USCar Trader can document these points through a separately commissioned on-site inspection; inaccessible areas or unauthorised road tests are explicitly recorded as unchecked.

Germany and Europe

Differences, adaptation and registration

What US models do differently

The most important difference for the ND is the engine: US buyers only got the 2.0-litre, while Europe also offered a 1.5.

German TÜV and registration

Typical work to pass TÜV includes retrofitting a rear fog lamp, converting or adapting the headlights to the correct beam pattern, addressing amber side markers where required, and confirming the speedometer reads km/h (or fitting a compliant solution).

USCar Trader services

Inspection, purchase processing and escrow

As a buyer based in Germany, you do not have to inspect the vehicle yourself in the United States or Canada. Within the agreed scope, USCar Trader can coordinate document review, a separately commissioned on-site inspection and purchase processing.

  • Vehicle profile and history: The profile can show the VIN, US title status and available history records. No data source guarantees that every earlier event was reported.
  • Optional CARFAX report: Additional reported maintenance or service entries can be included. The report is not a complete service book or proof of every interval.
  • On-site inspection / USCT AutoCheck: USCar Trader can arrange a separately booked vehicle inspection. Agreed visible and accessible areas are documented. Road or functional tests require suitable access and seller approval; the visual review is not a lift inspection or workshop diagnosis.
  • Purchase processing and escrow: After approval, USCar Trader can coordinate seller contact, negotiation, contract and the escrow and import service. Fees, payment route and responsibilities are recorded in advance.
  • Recalls: Open safety recalls can be checked by VIN through the NHTSA recall search; they do not describe overall condition.

Covered inspection points are agreed in advance. An on-site inspection records condition at the appointment and is not a guarantee.

Next step: Before commissioning, USCar Trader and the customer agree which document, history, inspection and transaction checks suit the vehicle and are included in the service. This records what was actually checked.

Questions and answers

Common questions about importing this model

Does this vehicle automatically qualify for a 0% import-duty rate?

No, not automatically. A 0% EU import-duty rate may be available for a vehicle covered by Regulation (EU) 2026/1455 that has US origin and is imported directly into the EU. CETA may apply to a vehicle with preferential Canadian origin. Whether the requirements are met is assessed for the individual case. Please contact USCar Trader before purchase; we review the possible duty benefit and provide non-binding support. Import VAT and other costs are assessed separately.

Which generation is best to import?

The ND (2016+) for a modern car, especially the 181 hp 2019+ version; the NC if you want the folding hardtop and lower cost of entry.

How is import VAT treated when importing a Mazda MX-5 Miata?

Import VAT and other taxes or costs are assessed separately under the applicable rules and the circumstances of the individual case. A blanket answer for every vehicle would not be reliable.

Are US Miatas rustier than European ones?

It depends entirely on region. Sun-belt cars are often cleaner than northern-European examples, but rust-belt cars can be worse. Always inspect the underside.

Is the driving experience different from an EU Miata?

Mechanically the ND drives the same; US cars simply lack the 1.5 option and carry US lighting and instrumentation.

Do I need individual approval (Einzelabnahme)?

Often yes for a US-spec car, unless a matching EU type approval and CoC can be used. We assess this per VIN.

How long does the import take?

Typically several weeks from purchase to registration, driven mainly by ocean freight and clearance scheduling.

Can you handle payment safely?

Yes. We use escrow so funds are released only against the correct documents.
