Maserati Ghibli

The third-generation Maserati Ghibli is an Italian executive sedan that competes with the German establishment while offering something they cannot: a Ferrari-built engine and a distinctly Latin character.

Model profile

Model history and generations

Generations at a glance

The Ghibli name returned in 2013 on the M157 platform, a mid-size sport sedan positioned below the Quattroporte and sharing much of its architecture. Over its life it received steady updates: a significant 2017 revision improved interior quality and added the GranLusso and GranSport appearance packages, and a 2021 refresh brought a modernised infotainment system, updated styling, and the flagship Trofeo.

Powertrain and equipment

Engines, drivetrain and trims

Powertrain lineup

The core engine is a 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 assembled by Ferrari in Maranello. In the base Ghibli it produces around 330 hp; the Ghibli S and S Q4 raise this to roughly 345, and later 424–430 hp in higher states of tune.

Trims in the US market

The Ghibli is offered only as a four-door sedan. Trim structure centres on the engine tier (Ghibli, S, S Q4, Trofeo) combined with the GranLusso comfort package or the GranSport styling package.

Vehicle selection

North American market and suitability

The used market stateside

Because the Ghibli depreciated steeply in the USA, the used market is full of low-to-moderate-mileage cars at a fraction of their original cost.

Who should import one

The Ghibli suits a buyer who wants an exclusive, Ferrari-engined executive sedan with presence that German rivals lack, and who understands that ownership rewards diligent maintenance.

Pre-purchase review

Model-specific inspection points

Inspection plan for this model

For the Maserati Ghibli, the agreed inspection plan focuses in particular on vehicle history, visible body and underbody condition, fluid leaks, warning messages, tyres, brakes and accessible suspension components. USCar Trader can document these points through a separately commissioned on-site inspection; inaccessible areas or unauthorised road tests are explicitly recorded as unchecked.

Germany and Europe

Differences, adaptation and registration

What US models do differently

Both US and European Ghiblis are left-hand drive, which simplifies things, but US cars have mph clusters, US-specification lighting, and are petrol-only, whereas Europe also sold the diesel.

German TÜV and registration

Typical work covers headlight beam adaptation, fitting or confirming a rear fog lamp, verifying the speedometer, and documenting the odometer conversion for the Einzelabnahme.

USCar Trader services

Inspection, purchase processing and escrow

As a buyer based in Germany, you do not have to inspect the vehicle yourself in the United States or Canada. Within the agreed scope, USCar Trader can coordinate document review, a separately commissioned on-site inspection and purchase processing.

  • Vehicle profile and history: The profile can show the VIN, US title status and available history records. No data source guarantees that every earlier event was reported.
  • Optional CARFAX report: Additional reported maintenance or service entries can be included. The report is not a complete service book or proof of every interval.
  • On-site inspection / USCT AutoCheck: USCar Trader can arrange a separately booked vehicle inspection. Agreed visible and accessible areas are documented. Road or functional tests require suitable access and seller approval; the visual review is not a lift inspection or workshop diagnosis.
  • Purchase processing and escrow: After approval, USCar Trader can coordinate seller contact, negotiation, contract and the escrow and import service. Fees, payment route and responsibilities are recorded in advance.
  • Recalls: Open safety recalls can be checked by VIN through the NHTSA recall search; they do not describe overall condition.

Covered inspection points are agreed in advance. An on-site inspection records condition at the appointment and is not a guarantee.

Next step: Before commissioning, USCar Trader and the customer agree which document, history, inspection and transaction checks suit the vehicle and are included in the service. This records what was actually checked.

Questions and answers

Common questions about importing this model

Does this vehicle automatically qualify for a 0% import-duty rate?

No, not automatically. A 0% EU import-duty rate may be available for a vehicle covered by Regulation (EU) 2026/1455 that has US origin and is imported directly into the EU. CETA may apply to a vehicle with preferential Canadian origin. Whether the requirements are met is assessed for the individual case. Please contact USCar Trader before purchase; we review the possible duty benefit and provide non-binding support. Import VAT and other costs are assessed separately.

Are US Ghiblis petrol only?

Yes. The diesel was never sold in the USA, so all American-market Ghiblis have the twin-turbo petrol engines.

Who makes the Ghibli's engine?

The V6 and V8 are built by Ferrari in Maranello, a key part of the car's appeal.

How reliable is the Ghibli?

It is dependable when properly maintained, but sensitive to neglect; service history and a pre-purchase inspection are essential.

Is the Q4 all-wheel-drive version better for Germany?

Q4 adds traction in poor weather while remaining rear-biased, which many buyers prefer for European conditions.

Why are US Ghiblis often cheaper to buy?

Steep depreciation in the US market means many well-kept, lower-mileage cars are available at attractive purchase prices.

How is import VAT treated when importing a Maserati Ghibli?

Import VAT and other taxes or costs are assessed separately under the applicable rules and the circumstances of the individual case. A blanket answer for every vehicle would not be reliable.

How can a specific Maserati Ghibli be checked from Germany?

Available VIN, title and history information can be reviewed in the vehicle profile. USCar Trader can also arrange a separately booked on-site inspection within a scope agreed in advance.
