Infiniti QX50

Importing a used Infiniti QX50 from the USA

The Infiniti QX50 is Nissan's premium mid-size crossover, and because Infiniti never sold in Germany, importing is the only route to one here. That rarity is part of the appeal: a QX50 stands out among the usual German premium SUVs while offering a comfortable, well-equipped cabin and, in later cars, a genuinely clever engine. USCar Trader is an independent broker helping private buyers import a used Infiniti QX50 from the USA. We hold no stock and take no margin — you pick the car, and we verify, ship and clear it properly.

Model history: years and generations

There are two very different QX50 generations. The first (originally the EX35/EX37, renamed QX50 for 2014, sold through 2017) was a rear-drive-based, V6-powered compact crossover derived from the G-series sedans — sporty, narrow and enthusiast-flavoured. The second generation, launched for 2019 and still current with a 2022 refresh, is a completely new front-drive-based crossover on a Nissan/Renault platform, larger inside and powered by the innovative VC-Turbo variable-compression engine. When buyers search for a used QX50 today, both cars come up, and they drive nothing alike.

Engines, transmissions and drive

The first-generation QX50 uses Nissan's 3.7-litre VQ37VHR V6 (around 325 hp) with a seven-speed automatic and standard rear-wheel drive or optional all-wheel drive — a smooth, revvy engine with a strong following. The second generation switched to the 2.0-litre VC-Turbo four-cylinder, the world's first production variable-compression engine, producing roughly 268 hp and paired with a CVT. It drives the front wheels as standard with all-wheel drive optional. The two approaches could hardly be more different: one is an old-school V6, the other a technology showcase focused on efficiency.

Equipment lines and body styles

The QX50 is a five-seat, five-door crossover throughout. American trims on the current car ran Pure, Luxe, Essential, Sensory and Autograph, with higher grades adding quilted semi-aniline leather, a Bose audio system, the dual-screen infotainment, ProPILOT Assist and a panoramic roof. Older EX-derived cars offered Journey and premium/technology packages. Loaded examples are common, so equipment is rarely the limiting factor when sourcing.

The US used market

Supply is healthy, especially of 2019–2022 VC-Turbo cars with 30,000 to 80,000 miles. Because Infiniti sold on value, many are well-kept lease returns with full history. Sun-belt cars offer rust-free bodies and intact interiors. Carfax and AutoCheck reports are readily available, so accident and title status can be confirmed before purchase. Condition is generally good; the key variables are transmission maintenance on the CVT cars and service records on the VC-Turbo engine.

Is an import right for you?

The current QX50 suits a buyer who wants a comfortable, distinctive premium crossover with a roomy interior and is content with relaxed rather than sporty driving. The older V6 QX50 appeals to enthusiasts who prefer a naturally aspirated engine and rear-drive balance over outright practicality. Neither is the choice for someone who needs the cheapest possible running costs, but both offer something German-market SUVs do not: genuine rarity on the road.

Common issues buyers should know

The VC-Turbo engine is clever but complex, and its long-term record is still being written; the main watch points are oil quality and level, correct servicing, and any warning signs from the variable-compression actuator. Owners report occasional oil-dilution concerns and infotainment lag on the dual-screen system. The CVT is the bigger long-term consideration: it needs its fluid serviced on schedule and does not tolerate neglect or overheating, so a documented transmission history is essential. The older V6 QX50 is mechanically simpler and very durable, though the VQ37 can use some oil and the timing chain deserves attention at high mileage. As always, buy on service records rather than mileage alone, and budget for CVT fluid changes on the current car.

Differences from the European version

US QX50s have MPH instruments, North American lighting logic, SiriusXM and US navigation data, and some assistance features are calibrated for American roads. Because Infiniti was never an official German brand, dealer support is limited, but the QX50 shares much of its engineering with Nissan, so servicing is manageable. These differences are resolved during the approval process.

Import step by step

The sequence is: you select a car and we shortlist to your spec; we run a VIN and plant-origin check plus Carfax/AutoCheck; funds are held in escrow until the vehicle is secured; the QX50 is shipped by ocean freight to a European port; customs clearance follows on arrival; the car passes TUEV and individual approval (Einzelabnahme); and you register it in Germany. We manage each stage and keep you informed throughout.

Customs and taxes: what applies

Remember: no origin proof, no 0% duty – and 19% German import VAT is due on every import.

Duty depends on the actual build plant, which the VIN reveals. The current QX50 is assembled in Aguascalientes, Mexico, so it generally does not have US origin and typically will not qualify for the 0% US-origin duty rate under Regulations (EU) 2026/1455 and 2026/1461 — that rate needs provable US origin. Some earlier QX50/EX cars were built in Japan, which likewise is not US origin. We check the plant for every car and never promise duty-free treatment. Independent of any duty, the 19% German import VAT (Einfuhrumsatzsteuer) is charged separately and always applies. We quote no margin.

Modifications and single-vehicle approval

Standard approval work includes fitting or activating a rear fog lamp, adjusting the headlights for right-hand traffic, and converting the odometer and displays to kilometres. With these European essentials handled, the QX50 clears TUEV and individual approval without unusual difficulty.

What to verify before buying

Before we commit to a QX50 we verify: the VIN and build plant for origin; the Carfax or AutoCheck history for accidents and branding; the title status (clean vs. salvage); rust on the underbody, mainly on northern cars; documented CVT fluid service on current cars or timing-chain condition on the V6; correct operation of the infotainment and driver-assist systems; and consistent, plausible mileage.

Common questions

Which QX50 generation is better to import?

The 2019+ VC-Turbo car is roomier and more modern; the older V6 is simpler and more durable. Your priorities decide.

Does the Infiniti QX50 qualify for 0% import duty?

Usually not. The current car is built in Mexico and earlier ones in Japan, so they lack US origin; the plant check confirms the rate.

Is the 19% import VAT always charged?

Yes. The 19% German Einfuhrumsatzsteuer applies to the customs value in every case, separate from any duty.

Is the CVT a concern?

It is reliable if serviced on schedule. Insist on documented CVT fluid changes and avoid neglected examples.

Can I get the QX50 serviced in Germany?

Yes. It shares much engineering with Nissan, so independent specialists can maintain it despite the absence of Infiniti dealers.

Will it pass TUEV?

Yes, after a rear fog lamp, headlight adjustment and odometer conversion it passes individual approval routinely.

Do you add a markup?

No. USCar Trader is an independent broker with no stock and no margin on the vehicle.
