Model profile

Model history and generations

Generations at a glance

Honda revived the Passport name in 2019 as a two-row, five-seat SUV positioned between the CR-V and the three-row Pilot. It rides on Honda's Global Light Truck platform, shared with the Pilot and the Ridgeline pickup, giving it a rugged unibody structure with real ground clearance. A styling refresh arrived for 2022, bringing a bolder front end and, importantly, the off-road-flavoured TrailSport trim.

Powertrain and equipment

Engines, drivetrain and trims

Powertrain lineup

Every US Passport of this generation uses Honda's 3.5-litre J35Y6 V6, producing around 280 hp and 262 lb-ft of torque. Power goes through a nine-speed ZF automatic, with front-wheel drive standard on early base cars and Honda's torque-vectoring i-VTM4 all-wheel-drive system optional or standard depending on year and trim.

Trims in the US market

The Passport is offered only as a five-seat SUV. US trims ran Sport, EX-L, Touring and Elite at launch, with the TrailSport added from 2022 bringing all-terrain tyres, a slightly retuned setup and rugged styling.

Vehicle selection

North American market and suitability

The used market stateside

Supply is healthy. The Passport sold steadily across the US, and off-lease and one-owner examples from 2019 onward appear regularly, many with the desirable AWD system and higher trims.

Who should import one

Import a used Passport if you want a rugged, five-seat V6 SUV with real cargo room and proven Honda mechanicals, and you like the idea of a model Europe never officially received.

Pre-purchase review

Model-specific inspection points

Inspection plan for this model

For the Honda Passport, the agreed inspection plan focuses in particular on frame, underbody, towing or payload modifications, visible corrosion and records of previous use. USCar Trader can document these points through a separately commissioned on-site inspection; inaccessible areas or unauthorised road tests are explicitly recorded as unchecked.

Germany and Europe

Differences, adaptation and registration

What US models do differently

As a US-only model, the Passport comes configured for American roads: US headlight beam patterns, no rear fog lamp, miles-based instruments and US navigation mapping.

German TÜV and registration

Typical approval work includes fitting a rear fog lamp, verifying or adjusting the headlights to European specification, confirming the speedometer reading, and documenting the odometer.

USCar Trader services

Inspection, purchase processing and escrow

As a buyer based in Germany, you do not have to inspect the vehicle yourself in the United States or Canada. Within the agreed scope, USCar Trader can coordinate document review, a separately commissioned on-site inspection and purchase processing.

  • Vehicle profile and history: The profile can show the VIN, US title status and available history records. No data source guarantees that every earlier event was reported.
  • Optional CARFAX report: Additional reported maintenance or service entries can be included. The report is not a complete service book or proof of every interval.
  • On-site inspection / USCT AutoCheck: USCar Trader can arrange a separately booked vehicle inspection. Agreed visible and accessible areas are documented. Road or functional tests require suitable access and seller approval; the visual review is not a lift inspection or workshop diagnosis.
  • Purchase processing and escrow: After approval, USCar Trader can coordinate seller contact, negotiation, contract and the escrow and import service. Fees, payment route and responsibilities are recorded in advance.
  • Recalls: Open safety recalls can be checked by VIN through the NHTSA recall search; they do not describe overall condition.

Covered inspection points are agreed in advance. An on-site inspection records condition at the appointment and is not a guarantee.

Next step: Before commissioning, USCar Trader and the customer agree which document, history, inspection and transaction checks suit the vehicle and are included in the service. This records what was actually checked.

Questions and answers

Common questions about importing this model

Can I import a used Honda Passport to Germany?

Yes. It was never sold new here, but it can be imported as a used vehicle and approved for registration via individual approval.

Does this vehicle automatically qualify for a 0% import-duty rate?

No, not automatically. A 0% EU import-duty rate may be available for a vehicle covered by Regulation (EU) 2026/1455 that has US origin and is imported directly into the EU. CETA may apply to a vehicle with preferential Canadian origin. Whether the requirements are met is assessed for the individual case. Please contact USCar Trader before purchase; we review the possible duty benefit and provide non-binding support. Import VAT and other costs are assessed separately.

How is import VAT treated when importing a Honda Passport?

Import VAT and other taxes or costs are assessed separately under the applicable rules and the circumstances of the individual case. A blanket answer for every vehicle would not be reliable.

Is the Honda Passport reliable?

Very. The J35 V6 is proven; the main watch item is early nine-speed transmission shift quality, largely improved by software.

How many seats does the Passport have?

Five. It trades the Pilot's third row for extra cargo space.

Does it have all-wheel drive?

Many do, via Honda's i-VTM4 torque-vectoring system; front-wheel drive was offered on some cars.

Will it pass TÜV?

Yes, after standard conversions such as a rear fog lamp and headlight adjustment during individual approval.

Can you find a TrailSport specifically?

Yes. As a broker we search the US market for the exact trim, drivetrain and colour you want.
