Choose a specific vehicle. Where data is available, its detail page shows the import cost calculation. We assess any possible duty benefit with you before purchase.

Important: A 0% EU import-duty rate may be available for a vehicle covered by Regulation (EU) 2026/1455 that has US origin and is imported directly into the EU. CETA may apply to a vehicle with preferential Canadian origin. Whether the requirements are met is assessed for the individual case. Honda Insight

The Honda Insight is one of the more interesting hybrids to bring across the Atlantic, precisely because it was never a mainstream seller in Germany.

Model profile

Model history and generations

Model history: years and generations

The nameplate covers three very different cars. The first-generation Insight (2000-2006) was a two-seat aluminium coupe with a teardrop tail and covered rear wheels, powered by a 1.0-litre three-cylinder with Honda's Integrated Motor Assist (IMA). It was a technology halo car and today a collector curiosity.

Engines, transmissions and drive

The third-generation car pairs a 1.5-litre Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder (petrol) with a two-motor hybrid system.

Equipment lines and body styles

In its final sedan form the US Insight came as LX, EX and Touring.

Vehicle selection

North American market and suitability

The US used market

Supply is best for 2019-2022 sedans and 2010-2014 hatchbacks. Typical third-generation cars now show moderate mileage and were often used as economical commuters, so full service histories and clean interiors are common. Hybrid batteries in these cars have proven durable, but as with any used hybrid you want evidence that the pack has not been flagged.

Pre-purchase review

Model-specific inspection points

Common issues buyers should know

The third-generation Insight has a strong reliability record; it shares most mechanical parts with the Civic, so components and know-how are widely available. The main historical Insight common problem sits with the older IMA cars: the second-generation battery packs can lose capacity over time, triggering reduced assist and, in some cases, a battery warning.

Germany and Europe

Differences, adaptation and registration

Differences from the European version

US cars run amber front side-marker lights, often lack a rear fog lamp, and use miles-per-hour instruments.

Modifications and single-vehicle approval

Typical work to pass German type approval includes converting or adding a rear fog lamp, adjusting or replacing headlights for the correct beam pattern, confirming the side-marker situation, and verifying that the odometer can be read and documented in kilometres for the paperwork.

USCar Trader services

Inspection, purchase processing and escrow

As a buyer based in Germany, you do not have to inspect the vehicle yourself in the United States or Canada. Within the agreed scope, USCar Trader can coordinate document review, a separately commissioned on-site inspection and purchase processing.

  • Vehicle profile and history: The profile can show the VIN, US title status and available history records. No data source guarantees that every earlier event was reported.
  • Optional CARFAX report: Additional reported maintenance or service entries can be included. The report is not a complete service book or proof of every interval.
  • On-site inspection / USCT AutoCheck: USCar Trader can arrange a separately booked vehicle inspection. Agreed visible and accessible areas are documented. Road or functional tests require suitable access and seller approval; the visual review is not a lift inspection or workshop diagnosis.
  • Purchase processing and escrow: After approval, USCar Trader can coordinate seller contact, negotiation, contract and the escrow and import service. Fees, payment route and responsibilities are recorded in advance.
  • Recalls: Open safety recalls can be checked by VIN through the NHTSA recall search; they do not describe overall condition.

Covered inspection points are agreed in advance. An on-site inspection records condition at the appointment and is not a guarantee.

Next step: Before commissioning, USCar Trader and the customer agree which document, history, inspection and transaction checks suit the vehicle and are included in the service. This records what was actually checked.

Questions and answers

Common questions about importing this model

Is the Honda Insight a reliable used import?

Yes. The third-generation sedan in particular has a solid reliability record and shares parts with the Civic, making German servicing easy. Older IMA cars need a battery health check.

Does this vehicle automatically qualify for a 0% import-duty rate?

No, not automatically. A 0% EU import-duty rate may be available for a vehicle covered by Regulation (EU) 2026/1455 that has US origin and is imported directly into the EU. CETA may apply to a vehicle with preferential Canadian origin. Whether the requirements are met is assessed for the individual case. Please contact USCar Trader before purchase; we review the possible duty benefit and provide non-binding support. Import VAT and other costs are assessed separately.

How is import VAT treated when importing a Honda Insight?

Import VAT and other taxes or costs are assessed separately under the applicable rules and the circumstances of the individual case. A blanket answer for every vehicle would not be reliable.

Which generation should I import?

For daily use, the 2019-2022 i-MMD sedan is the strongest choice. The hatchback is cheaper but older; the two-seat first generation is a collector item.

Can I get parts and service in Germany?

Yes. The drivetrain and much of the running gear are shared with globally sold Hondas, so wear parts and consumables are readily available.

Is all-wheel drive available?

No. Every Insight is front-wheel drive across all generations.

How long does the import take?

Allow roughly six to twelve weeks from purchase to registration, depending on shipping schedules and TÜV appointments.

How can a specific Honda Insight be checked from Germany?

Available VIN, title and history information can be reviewed in the vehicle profile. USCar Trader can also arrange a separately booked on-site inspection within a scope agreed in advance.
