Ford Fusion Hybrid

Importing a used Ford Fusion Hybrid from the USA

The Ford Fusion Hybrid is a mid-size front-wheel-drive sedan that America produced in enormous numbers, and it belongs to a class of car that Europe never received in the same volume. If you want a comfortable, economical highway cruiser with proven hybrid technology and clean American styling, importing a used Fusion Hybrid from the USA is a rational move. USCar Trader works strictly as your independent broker on these cars: we find and vet the vehicle, arrange shipping and clearance, and take no dealer margin. Here is what you should understand about the model before you buy.

Model history: years and generations

The Fusion Hybrid arrived for the 2010 model year on the first-generation CD3 Fusion, using a 2.5-litre Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder paired with Ford's full hybrid system for a combined output near 191 hp. It was well received and genuinely frugal for its size. The far more significant car is the second generation (2013–2020), built on the global CD4 platform, with sleek styling led by a wide grille often compared to an Aston Martin. This generation carried a 2.0-litre Atkinson four with the hybrid drive (roughly 188 hp combined) and spawned the plug-in Fusion Energi alongside the standard Fusion Hybrid. When you shop the US market today, the 2013–2020 car is by far the most common.

Engines, transmissions and drive

The Fusion Hybrid uses Ford's power-split full-hybrid system, conceptually similar to Toyota's approach, driving the front wheels through an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission (eCVT) with no conventional gears to wear out. The petrol engine and two electric motor-generators blend seamlessly; the car pulls away on electric power and shuts the engine off at rest and at low speed. A nickel-metal-hydride battery pack (later lithium-ion on the plug-in) sits behind the rear seat. There is no manual option and no all-wheel drive — this is a front-drive economy sedan, and it does that job very well, returning strong real-world fuel economy that comfortably beats a comparable diesel in city use.

Equipment lines and body styles

The Fusion Hybrid was sold only as a four-door sedan. US trims typically ran S, SE, SEL, Titanium and, later, Platinum. Titanium and Platinum cars are worth seeking out: they add leather, upgraded audio (Sony), navigation, driver-assist features and better wheels. American cars are frequently better equipped than European buyers expect, with heated seats, adaptive cruise and lane-keeping appearing regularly on higher trims.

The US used market

Supply is excellent. The Fusion Hybrid sold in large numbers as a private car, a company car and a fleet vehicle, so you will find a wide spread of years, mileages and conditions. Fleet and rideshare cars can carry high mileage, so history matters. As always we favour dry southern-state cars for their rust-free underbodies, which pays off at TUEV. Typical privately owned examples show moderate mileage and complete service records.

Is an import right for you?

This is the car for a buyer who wants a spacious, quiet, fuel-efficient sedan without paying European premium-brand money, or who specifically likes the second-generation Fusion's design, which was never sold new in most of Europe under this name. It is not a driver's car, and it is not built in the United States in every case, so the temporary 0% EU origin preference will only apply if a specific example is proven to have a US plant of manufacture; otherwise duty follows the actual origin.

Common issues buyers should know

The Fusion Hybrid is generally dependable, and the hybrid drivetrain itself is robust, but there are known weak points worth checking. Early second-generation cars shipped with the maligned MyFord Touch infotainment, which was slow and glitch-prone; the later SYNC 3 system is much better. Some cars suffered door-latch problems that led to a well-known recall — confirm it was addressed. The hybrid coolant pumps and the 12-volt battery can cause no-start or warning messages as cars age. Watch for the throttle body and, on higher-mileage cars, the condition of the hybrid battery pack, which can lose capacity but rarely fails outright. For Ford Fusion Hybrid reliability the sensible approach is to verify recall completion and check that all hybrid systems report healthy on a scan.

Differences from the European version

US cars use amber turn signals, American headlight beam patterns, miles-per-hour clusters and US-region SYNC. The Fusion nameplate and this exact hybrid configuration were largely absent from the German market, so parts familiarity at independent garages varies; Ford dealer support and hybrid specialists can generally cover servicing. Equipment on Titanium and Platinum cars often exceeds equivalent European mid-size sedans.

Import step by step

We follow a clear sequence: you select the car; we verify the VIN, title status and true build origin; payment is protected in escrow; the Fusion is shipped by RoRo or container to a North German port; we clear customs on arrival; the car passes TUEV and any required individual approval; then it is registered locally in Germany.

Customs and taxes: what applies

Key point: duty depends on the plant of build; only a VIN check secures the 0% rate. Import VAT of 19% applies regardless.

Keep the two charges distinct. Import duty may be 0% only for vehicles with provable US origin under EU Regulations 2026/1455 and 2026/1461 (in force since 1 July 2026, direct transport, valid through 31 December 2029). The Fusion Hybrid was assembled in North America, and the plant must be verified per car; where US origin is not proven, the standard duty rate for the actual plant applies. Separately, the 19% German import VAT (Einfuhrumsatzsteuer) is charged on every imported vehicle without exception. We never advertise duty-free import and we add no margin to these government charges.

Modifications and single-vehicle approval

Plan for lighting conversion: approved headlights or beam adaptation, a rear fog lamp (required in Germany, not fitted to US cars) and correctly handled side markers. The instrument cluster must show km/h. The odometer reading is recorded and checked. With the TUEV report in hand, registration at your local authority follows.

What to verify before buying

  • Decode the VIN and confirm build plant and exact hybrid specification.
  • Obtain a Carfax or AutoCheck report — check for fleet or rideshare use.
  • Confirm the door-latch and any safety recalls were completed.
  • Scan the hybrid system for battery state of health and fault codes.
  • Inspect the underbody for rust; prefer dry-state cars.
  • Verify a clean, non-salvage title.
  • Test the SYNC/infotainment and all electronic driver aids.

Common questions

Will a Ford Fusion Hybrid qualify for 0% import duty?

Only if that specific car is proven to have a US plant of origin. Assembly location varies, so origin must be verified per VIN; otherwise the standard duty rate applies.

Is the 19% import VAT unavoidable?

Yes. The 19% German Einfuhrumsatzsteuer applies to every imported car, separately from any duty.

How reliable is the hybrid system?

The eCVT hybrid drivetrain is one of the model's strengths. Verify battery health on a scan and check that recalls were done.

Does the hybrid battery need replacing often?

Not usually. Packs lose some capacity over many years but rarely fail completely; a health check tells you where a given car stands.

Which trim should I look for?

Titanium and Platinum cars offer the best equipment, including leather, upgraded audio and driver-assist features.

Can independent garages in Germany service it?

Yes. Ford dealers and hybrid specialists can support it; routine servicing is straightforward.

What about the MyFord Touch complaints?

Early cars had a slow system; later SYNC 3 cars are much improved. Test it before you buy.

How long does the whole import take?

Ocean freight is a few weeks, with additional time for customs clearance and TUEV approval.
