Ford F-450 Super Duty

Importing a used Ford F-450 Super Duty from the USA

The Ford F-450 Super Duty is a heavy-duty pickup at the very top of Ford's truck range — a dual-rear-wheel "dually" built for maximum towing and payload. Importing one to Germany is a deliberate choice for buyers who need serious capability or simply want the presence of a full-size American work truck. It is also a project that rewards careful planning, because the F-450's size, weight and diesel emissions systems all interact with German registration rules. USCar Trader handles these imports as an independent broker for used vehicles: we source, verify and ship, with no stock holding and no dealer margin.

Model history and generations

The F-450 pickup sits within Ford's Super Duty family, which was comprehensively redesigned for the 2017 model year with a high-strength aluminium body over a fully boxed steel frame, and then heavily updated for 2023 with new powertrain outputs, a fresh interior and expanded technology. Two broad eras therefore dominate the used market: the 2017–2022 fourth-generation Super Duty and the 2023-onward update. The pickup F-450 differs from the F-450 chassis cab — the pickup has a finished bed and luxury-capable cabins (up to Platinum and Limited), while the chassis cab is a bare platform for upfitters. For import you almost always want the pickup.

Engines and drivetrain

Two engines define the modern F-450. The headline unit is the 6.7-litre Power Stroke turbodiesel V8, which in later high-output form produces around 500 hp and up to roughly 1,200 lb-ft of torque — colossal figures aimed at heavy gooseneck and fifth-wheel towing. The alternative is the 7.3-litre "Godzilla" petrol V8, a big naturally aspirated pushrod engine making around 430 hp, favoured by buyers who want to avoid diesel emissions complexity. Both drive through Ford's 10-speed TorqShift automatic, with four-wheel drive and a two-speed transfer case widely fitted. The F-450 pickup uses dual rear wheels for stability under heavy loads.

Which trim makes sense

The body is a full-size crew-cab (or occasionally SuperCab) pickup with a dually rear axle. Trims climb from XL and XLT work-truck levels through Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum and Limited, the upper trims rivalling luxury SUVs for interior appointment while retaining the towing hardware. Key options include the fifth-wheel/gooseneck prep package, camera systems for trailering (Ford's Pro Trailer Backup Assist and multiple trailer cameras), upgraded axles and the heavy-service suspension. When evaluating US trucks, the engine choice, trim and towing equipment drive both usefulness and value.

Supply on the US market

Supply is plentiful — the Super Duty is a bestseller and many were fleet or working trucks, though plenty of privately owned examples exist in excellent condition. Typical import candidates range from clean, lower-mileage luxury-trim trucks to higher-mileage diesels that have towed hard. Diesel Super Dutys can accumulate significant mileage while remaining sound if maintained, but a hard-worked truck with a neglected emissions system is a liability. Look for complete service records, especially on the diesel's fuel and after-treatment systems. Condition varies more here than on a passenger car, so documentation is everything.

Who benefits from importing

The F-450 suits buyers with a genuine heavy-towing need — large trailers, horseboxes, boats — or those who specifically want the biggest Ford pickup. Be realistic about German practicality first: the truck's width, length and gross weight affect parking, some road access and, importantly, the driving licence and registration category. If your towing needs are more modest, an F-250 or F-350 is easier to live with. The F-450 is the right tool only when you truly need its capability.

Known weak points and maintenance

The Super Duty is a durable workhorse, but the 6.7 Power Stroke diesel has specific, well-known weak points to check. The most important is the Bosch CP4.2 high-pressure fuel pump used on many years: when it fails it can send metal debris through the entire fuel system, an expensive repair, and preventative measures (disaster-prevention kits, careful fuel quality) are worth confirming. Diesel emissions hardware — the DEF (AdBlue) system, EGR cooler and DPF — is a common source of faults and warning lights, particularly on trucks used for short trips or with lapsed maintenance. Also inspect the front end on 4x4 trucks (ball joints, wheel bearings, steering damper), turbo condition, and the usual heavy-use wear. The 7.3 petrol V8 avoids the diesel emissions complexity and is generally robust, at the cost of higher fuel consumption. Confirm all recalls and any CP4-related service history before shipping.

US and EU spec compared

Beyond the standard US-to-EU items — amber side markers, SAE headlights, miles-based instruments, a required rear fog lamp — the F-450's sheer scale creates real differences. Its gross vehicle weight sits well above 3.5 tonnes, so in Germany it typically cannot be driven on a standard class B car licence; the appropriate C1/C category and registration class apply, and this must be understood before purchase. Width and length affect where the truck can practically be used and parked. Diesel trucks bring the AdBlue/emissions systems that must function for approval. These are not deal-breakers, but they make the F-450 a more involved import than a passenger car.

The import process in detail

The sequence: agree engine, trim and configuration and shortlist trucks; run a VIN and origin check to confirm the build plant, history and emissions/recall status; hold funds in escrow until verified; book ocean freight (RoRo is common for large trucks); clear customs at the European port; present the truck for TÜV individual approval, addressing lighting, emissions and dimensional documentation; then register in the correct weight/licence category at the Zulassungsstelle. We coordinate each stage given the extra complexity of a heavy-duty vehicle.

What customs clearance really costs

Remember: no origin proof, no 0% duty – and 19% German import VAT is due on every import.

Origin must be established by VIN. Ford builds Super Duty trucks in the United States, which is favourable, but because this model is treated as origin-neutral here, the actual plant code should be confirmed rather than assumed. Where the truck is provably US-built and shipped directly, the 0% EU import duty under Regulations (EU) 2026/1455 and 2026/1461 (in force since 1 July 2026 through 31 December 2029) can apply; where US origin cannot be proven, the standard customs rate for the vehicle applies. Note that customs classification and rates for heavy commercial-type vehicles can differ from passenger cars, which we confirm per truck. In every case, regardless of origin, the 19% German import VAT (Einfuhrumsatzsteuer) is charged separately on the import value. We never call an import duty-free and we never add a margin.

TÜV, modifications and registration

Approval items include lighting (beam pattern, rear fog lamp, side markers), the km/h display, and — for the diesel — a fully functioning emissions/AdBlue system. The dually rear axle, dimensions and weight are all recorded and must match the registration class. The odometer is documented and cross-checked. Registration then falls into the correct heavy-vehicle category, which also affects road tax and insurance, so plan for those running costs.

Check before you buy

Before committing: verify the VIN and confirm the build plant and origin; pull a Carfax or AutoCheck history for accidents, title and odometer; on diesels, confirm CP4 fuel pump status and any preventative work, plus DEF/EGR/DPF health; review the full service history, especially for a truck that has towed heavily; inspect the 4x4 front-end and suspension for wear; confirm the title is clean, not salvage or rebuilt; and confirm your German driving licence covers the truck's weight class before you buy.

Common questions

Do I need a special driving licence for an F-450 in Germany?

Likely yes. The F-450's gross weight is well above 3.5 tonnes, so a standard class B licence is usually not sufficient — plan for the appropriate C1/C category before purchase.

Which engine should I import, the diesel or the 7.3 petrol?

The 6.7 Power Stroke diesel offers maximum towing torque; the 7.3 "Godzilla" petrol avoids diesel emissions complexity at the cost of higher fuel use. Choose by your towing needs.

What is the biggest reliability concern on the diesel?

The CP4.2 high-pressure fuel pump on many years — a failure can contaminate the whole fuel system. Confirm its history and any preventative measures.

Does the F-450 qualify for 0% EU import duty?

Only if the VIN proves US origin and it ships directly, and subject to correct customs classification. It is never guaranteed, and the 19% import VAT always applies.

How much can an F-450 tow?

Configured for gooseneck towing, capacity can reach roughly 40,000 lb, though the usable figure in Germany is governed by registration and licence limits.

Will the AdBlue system work in Germany?

It must function for approval and ongoing use. Verify the DEF, EGR and DPF systems are healthy before importing a diesel.

Is the F-450 practical as a daily vehicle?

Rarely. Its width, length and weight make it demanding in everyday German traffic and parking; it is best suited to genuine heavy-towing use.

Is USCar Trader a Ford dealer?

No. We are an independent broker for used US vehicles, with no manufacturer partnership and no margin.
