Ford F-250 Super Duty

Importing a used Ford F-250 Super Duty from the USA

The Ford F-250 Super Duty is a heavy-duty pickup that simply has no direct European equivalent, which is exactly why it is one of the most sought-after US truck imports. It is built for towing and payload that dwarf anything in the mainstream European range, it is assembled in the United States, and it exists in enormous numbers on the American used market. For a buyer who needs to pull a serious trailer, run a business, or who just wants the presence of a full-size American workhorse on German roads, the Super Duty makes a compelling case — and its US origin can carry a real customs advantage.

USCar Trader is an independent broker. We do not stock trucks or take a margin on the vehicle; we source, verify and import the specific Super Duty you select.

Production years and key changes

The Super Duty line split from the light-duty F-150 in 1999 to serve heavier work. The generations that matter to importers are the 2011-2016 truck (which introduced the 6.7-litre Power Stroke diesel), the 2017-2022 truck (a new aluminium-alloy body, higher tow ratings and a substantially updated interior), and the 2023-onward truck (revised styling, a modernised cabin with large screens and further diesel output increases). Each cycle raised towing and payload numbers, so a later truck is not just newer but meaningfully more capable. The F-250 sits between the F-150 and the even heavier F-350 in the range.

What is under the hood

Two engine families dominate. The petrol option has been a large V8 — the 6.2-litre in earlier trucks, replaced by the 7.3-litre "Godzilla" pushrod V8 (around 430 hp) from 2020. The headline engine is the 6.7-litre Power Stroke turbodiesel V8, which has climbed from roughly 400 hp and 800 lb-ft to well over 475 hp and 1,000+ lb-ft in the latest tune. Transmissions are heavy-duty six-speed and, later, ten-speed automatics. Most import-interest trucks are four-wheel drive with a two-speed transfer case and a solid front axle, giving the Super Duty its trademark towing stability and off-road ability.

Trims and body styles

The F-250 comes in Regular Cab, SuperCab (extended) and Crew Cab configurations, with short or long beds. US trims run XL and XLT (work-focused), Lariat (leather and comfort), and the premium King Ranch, Platinum and Limited grades, plus the off-road Tremor package. Crew Cab Lariat and Platinum diesels draw the most European interest because they combine four full doors, the big diesel and a well-appointed cabin. Dually (dual-rear-wheel) F-350 variants exist but on the F-250 single rear wheels are standard.

What the US market offers

Supply is vast. The Super Duty is a fixture of American work and towing life, so used trucks span every cab, bed, engine and trim across a wide age and mileage range. Import candidates are commonly three to ten years old; diesels routinely show higher mileage because they are built for it, and a well-maintained 6.7 with 100,000-plus miles can be a sound buy. Trucks from dry southern and western states avoid the road-salt corrosion that plagues northern examples, and the aluminium body of 2017-onward trucks resists rust well — though the frame and fasteners still deserve a close look.

Who this import is for

The Super Duty suits buyers with genuine towing or payload needs — horse trailers, boats, large caravans, plant and equipment — or those who want a capable, imposing full-size truck that Europe does not build. It is not a car for tight city parking or fuel economy, and its size demands respect on narrow roads. But for the right user, nothing in the European market replaces it, and its US assembly makes the import paperwork favourable.

Reliability: trouble spots to check

The 6.7 Power Stroke is a strong engine, but it has known items. Early 2011-2014 trucks used a Bosch CP4.2 high-pressure fuel pump that can fail and contaminate the whole fuel system with metal debris — an expensive event; many owners fit a disaster-prevention kit, so ask what has been done. Turbo and EGR cooler issues appear on high-mileage or poorly maintained diesels, and the diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) and emissions system must be functioning, as faults trigger derate modes. On petrol trucks the picture is simpler and the 7.3 Godzilla has proven robust. Across the range, check the frame and brake lines on salt-belt trucks for corrosion, and inspect ball joints, steering components and the solid front axle on high-mileage examples. A documented maintenance record, especially fuel-system and emissions work, is essential.

US vs. Europe differences

The Super Duty is a US-market truck through and through: no rear fog lamp, headlights aimed for right-hand traffic, miles-per-hour instruments, and lighting that must be brought to European requirements. Its sheer size affects registration class and toll and insurance treatment in Germany, and the diesel emissions system must meet the standards required for approval and any low-emission-zone access. Bed liners, fifth-wheel and gooseneck hitch prep and heavy-duty tow packages are common US-spec extras.

How the import works

Select a specific truck and have it inspected; decode the VIN and confirm US assembly to support the origin claim; place funds in escrow; arrange inland transport and ocean freight (a large truck needs suitable roll-on/roll-off or container space) to a port such as Bremerhaven; clear customs with origin and value documentation; present the truck for TUV and individual approval, where size, lighting and emissions are checked; and complete German registration. We coordinate every stage as your broker.

Import duty, VAT and fees

Bottom line: what matters is the factory shown by the VIN – proven US origin unlocks 0% duty. The 19% import VAT always applies.

Duty and VAT are quoted separately. Import duty depends on origin: under Regulations (EU) 2026/1455 and 2026/1461, a vehicle of provable US origin imported directly can qualify for a 0% duty rate between 1 July 2026 and 31 December 2029. Because the F-250 Super Duty is assembled in the United States, most trucks support that claim once the VIN and plant are verified — but it is never automatic and we never call it duty-free without documentation. Note also that commercial-style vehicles can attract different duty treatment than passenger cars, so classification is assessed case by case. Separately, the 19% German import VAT (Einfuhrumsatzsteuer) always applies, on the customs value plus freight and duty. Our brokerage fee is transparent, with no margin on the truck.

From modifications to registration

Expect to fit or activate a rear fog lamp, adapt or replace headlights for the European beam pattern, confirm the odometer in kilometres, and demonstrate that lighting, marker lamps and the emissions system meet requirements. Given the truck's dimensions, the approval also documents weights and classification for registration.

Pre-buy inspection points

Before buying any used F-250, check: decode the VIN and confirm US assembly for the origin case; pull a Carfax or AutoCheck history for accidents, title brands and odometer accuracy; on diesels, verify fuel-system and CP4-related history and confirm the emissions/DEF system is intact; inspect frame, brake lines and body for corrosion, favouring dry-state trucks; examine ball joints, steering and the front axle on high-mileage trucks; confirm a clean, non-salvage title; and review service records, ideally including any towing-related maintenance.

What buyers ask most

Does a used F-250 Super Duty qualify for 0% EU import duty?

It often can, because the Super Duty is US-built. The 0% rate applies only with provable US origin via VIN and plant, direct transport and within the 2026-2029 window, and classification is assessed individually — it is never guaranteed in advance.

Do I still pay VAT on an imported F-250?

Always. The 19% German import VAT applies to every import regardless of origin and is calculated separately from duty.

Should I choose the diesel or the petrol V8?

The 6.7 Power Stroke is the towing champion but needs a healthy emissions and fuel system; the 7.3 petrol is simpler and robust. Match it to your towing needs.

What is the biggest reliability concern?

On 2011-2014 diesels, the CP4.2 fuel pump. Confirm history and any prevention measures. Later trucks and the petrol V8 are less exposed.

Can the F-250 pass German approval?

Yes, with the usual lighting changes and a functioning emissions system. Its size affects classification but does not prevent registration.

Is the aluminium body a rust risk?

The 2017-onward body panels resist corrosion well, but the steel frame and fasteners still need inspection, especially on salt-belt trucks.

How is such a large truck shipped?

By roll-on/roll-off or suitable container freight; we arrange the space appropriate to the truck's dimensions.

How long does the import take?

Typically several weeks from selection to registration, driven by freight and approval timing.
