Model profile

Model history and generations

From launch to today

The modern F-150 Lightning launched for the 2022 model year, sharing its cab and bed with the fourteenth-generation combustion F-150 but riding on a bespoke frame with independent rear suspension and a skateboard battery. It should not be confused with the 1990s–2000s SVT Lightning, which was a supercharged petrol performance truck.

Powertrain and equipment

Engines, drivetrain and trims

Engines and drivetrain in detail

Every F-150 Lightning uses dual electric motors and standard all-wheel drive. Two batteries are offered: the Standard Range pack of roughly 98 kWh usable, and the Extended Range pack of roughly 131 kWh.

Trim levels and variants

All Lightnings are SuperCrew four-door pickups with a 5.5-foot bed. Trims run from the fleet-focused Pro, through the volume XLT, to the well-equipped Lariat and the top Platinum. The front trunk (the "Mega Power Frunk") adds around 400 litres of lockable, drainable storage where the engine would be.

Vehicle selection

North American market and suitability

Used availability in the USA

The USA is effectively the only meaningful source for this truck. Off-lease and early-adopter Lightnings appear regularly, many with modest mileage as second vehicles.

When importing makes sense

The Lightning suits a buyer who wants an electric pickup with real utility and presence that few Europeans can match.

Pre-purchase review

Model-specific inspection points

Reliability and common problems

As an early-run EV, the Lightning has seen software and charging updates, and Ford issued a 2023 stop-ship over a battery cell manufacturing defect that affected a specific build window; a clean recall record is worth confirming. Owners report occasional 12-volt battery and infotainment quirks, and range sensitivity in cold weather is significant given the truck's mass and frontal area.

Germany and Europe

Differences, adaptation and registration

How US versions differ

US trucks are left-hand drive with mph clusters and CCS1 charging rather than Europe's CCS2, so an adapter and a charging plan are essential.

From US purchase to registration

The assessment depends on the specific vehicle and the circumstances of the transaction. Please contact USCar Trader before purchase; we review any possible duty benefit and provide non-binding support. Import VAT and other costs are considered separately.

TÜV, approval and license plates

Typical work covers headlight beam adaptation, adding a rear fog lamp, confirming the speedometer and CCS charging behaviour for the Einzelabnahme, and documenting the odometer conversion.

USCar Trader services

Inspection, purchase processing and escrow

As a buyer based in Germany, you do not have to inspect the vehicle yourself in the United States or Canada. Within the agreed scope, USCar Trader can coordinate document review, a separately commissioned on-site inspection and purchase processing.

  • Vehicle profile and history: The profile can show the VIN, US title status and available history records. No data source guarantees that every earlier event was reported.
  • Optional CARFAX report: Additional reported maintenance or service entries can be included. The report is not a complete service book or proof of every interval.
  • On-site inspection / USCT AutoCheck: USCar Trader can arrange a separately booked vehicle inspection. Agreed visible and accessible areas are documented. Road or functional tests require suitable access and seller approval; the visual review is not a lift inspection or workshop diagnosis.
  • Purchase processing and escrow: After approval, USCar Trader can coordinate seller contact, negotiation, contract and the escrow and import service. Fees, payment route and responsibilities are recorded in advance.
  • Recalls: Open safety recalls can be checked by VIN through the NHTSA recall search; they do not describe overall condition.

Covered inspection points are agreed in advance. An on-site inspection records condition at the appointment and is not a guarantee.

Next step: Before commissioning, USCar Trader and the customer agree which document, history, inspection and transaction checks suit the vehicle and are included in the service. This records what was actually checked.

Questions and answers

Common questions about importing this model

Does this vehicle automatically qualify for a 0% import-duty rate?

No, not automatically. A 0% EU import-duty rate may be available for a vehicle covered by Regulation (EU) 2026/1455 that has US origin and is imported directly into the EU. CETA may apply to a vehicle with preferential Canadian origin. Whether the requirements are met is assessed for the individual case. Please contact USCar Trader before purchase; we review the possible duty benefit and provide non-binding support. Import VAT and other costs are assessed separately.

Can I fast-charge it in Europe?

Yes, with a CCS1-to-CCS2 adapter and appropriate planning, since US trucks use the CCS1 standard.

What is the real-world range?

Extended Range trucks cover roughly 350–450 km in mixed use, less in cold or when towing.

Is the Lightning reliable?

The drivetrain is simple and durable; verify battery health, charging history, and completed recalls on used examples.

How much can it tow?

Up to around 4,536 kg on Extended Range trucks with the towing package, though range drops sharply while towing.

Is it too big for European roads?

It is wide and long by European standards, so consider parking and lane width before importing.

How can a specific Ford F-150 Lightning be checked from Germany?

Available VIN, title and history information can be reviewed in the vehicle profile. USCar Trader can also arrange a separately booked on-site inspection within a scope agreed in advance.

Do I have to be on site to buy a Ford F-150 Lightning?

No. In line with the order, USCar Trader can coordinate seller contact, inspection, purchase processing, escrow and the subsequent import steps. The customer retains the purchase decision and approval.
