Model profile

Model history and generations

Production years and key changes

The third-generation Escape (2013–2019) shared its global C-platform with the European Kuga and is the value pick on the used market. The fourth generation (2020–present) moved to Ford's C2 architecture, grew roomier, and broadened the powertrain range to include efficient hybrids. Earlier US Escapes (2008–2012, second generation) were more truck-like and are now old; most sensible imports are third- or fourth-generation cars.

Engines, drivetrain and trims

What is under the hood

Third-generation US cars offered a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter Duratec (168 hp) as the base, a 1.6-liter EcoBoost turbo (178 hp), and a punchy 2.0-liter EcoBoost turbo (around 240 hp) at the top. All used a six-speed automatic, with front-wheel drive standard and all-wheel drive optional.

Trims and body styles

The Escape is a five-door crossover only. US trim ladders run S, SE, SEL and Titanium, with sportier ST-Line and rugged-look Active variants on later cars. Titanium adds leather, a premium Bang & Olufsen or Sony audio system, a panoramic roof, adaptive cruise and hands-free power tailgate.

Vehicle selection

North American market and suitability

What the US market offers

Supply is excellent. The Escape sold in vast numbers to private owners and fleets, so you can be selective about mileage, trim and history.

Who this import is for

An imported Escape suits buyers who want a right-sized, easy-driving family crossover with a US-market twist — perhaps a drivetrain or equipment combination the European Kuga never offered.

Pre-purchase review

Model-specific inspection points

Reliability: trouble spots to check

The most important Ford Escape common problems concern the earlier 1.6-liter EcoBoost, which was subject to a coolant-intrusion and overheating recall — verify the recall work was done, or favor another engine. The 2.0 EcoBoost can suffer internal water-pump wear (the pump is cam-driven and a failure can contaminate the oil), so check service history closely.

Germany and Europe

Differences, adaptation and registration

US vs. Europe differences

US Escapes are not identical to the European Kuga: engines, trims and some electronics differ.

From modifications to registration

Typical Escape changes include adding a rear fog lamp, coding or adapting the lighting so turn signals and daytime running lights comply, and documenting the odometer in kilometers.

USCar Trader services

Inspection, purchase processing and escrow

As a buyer based in Germany, you do not have to inspect the vehicle yourself in the United States or Canada. Within the agreed scope, USCar Trader can coordinate document review, a separately commissioned on-site inspection and purchase processing.

  • Vehicle profile and history: The profile can show the VIN, US title status and available history records. No data source guarantees that every earlier event was reported.
  • Optional CARFAX report: Additional reported maintenance or service entries can be included. The report is not a complete service book or proof of every interval.
  • On-site inspection / USCT AutoCheck: USCar Trader can arrange a separately booked vehicle inspection. Agreed visible and accessible areas are documented. Road or functional tests require suitable access and seller approval; the visual review is not a lift inspection or workshop diagnosis.
  • Purchase processing and escrow: After approval, USCar Trader can coordinate seller contact, negotiation, contract and the escrow and import service. Fees, payment route and responsibilities are recorded in advance.
  • Recalls: Open safety recalls can be checked by VIN through the NHTSA recall search; they do not describe overall condition.

Covered inspection points are agreed in advance. An on-site inspection records condition at the appointment and is not a guarantee.

Next step: Before commissioning, USCar Trader and the customer agree which document, history, inspection and transaction checks suit the vehicle and are included in the service. This records what was actually checked.

Questions and answers

Common questions about importing this model

Which Ford Escape engine is most reliable to import?

The 2.0 EcoBoost and the fourth-gen hybrid have the best reputations. The older 1.6 EcoBoost carries recall history, so buy one only with the recall confirmed as completed.

Does this vehicle automatically qualify for a 0% import-duty rate?

No, not automatically. A 0% EU import-duty rate may be available for a vehicle covered by Regulation (EU) 2026/1455 that has US origin and is imported directly into the EU. CETA may apply to a vehicle with preferential Canadian origin. Whether the requirements are met is assessed for the individual case. Please contact USCar Trader before purchase; we review the possible duty benefit and provide non-binding support. Import VAT and other costs are assessed separately.

How is import VAT treated when importing a Ford Escape?

Import VAT and other taxes or costs are assessed separately under the applicable rules and the circumstances of the individual case. A blanket answer for every vehicle would not be reliable.

Is the US Escape the same as the European Kuga?

They share a platform but differ in engines, trims and equipment, so a US Escape brings specifications the Kuga never offered here.

Can I import an Escape hybrid?

Yes. The fourth-generation 2.5-liter hybrid and plug-in hybrid can be imported and appeal to economy-focused buyers.

How is the Escape shipped from the USA?

By container or RoRo ocean freight from a US port to a German port, followed by customs clearance and TÜV approval.

What does the TÜV usually require?

Commonly a rear fog lamp, compliant lighting and turn signals, and kilometer documentation, plus headlight and emissions checks.

How can a specific Ford Escape be checked from Germany?

Available VIN, title and history information can be reviewed in the vehicle profile. USCar Trader can also arrange a separately booked on-site inspection within a scope agreed in advance.
