Important: A 0% EU import-duty rate may be available for a vehicle covered by Regulation (EU) 2026/1455 that has US origin and is imported directly into the EU. Ford Edge

The Ford Edge is one of America's most familiar two-row mid-size SUVs, and for import buyers it hits a useful sweet spot: bigger and more comfortable than a compact crossover, but without the third-row bulk and cost of a full family hauler.

Model profile

Model history and generations

Model history and generations

The Edge launched for 2007 as Ford's mid-size crossover and ran in two generations. The first generation (2007–2014) established the format on Ford's CD3 architecture. The second generation (2015–2024), built on the CD4 platform shared with the Fusion, is the one most relevant to importers: it is more refined, better equipped and available with the powertrains buyers actually want.

Engines, drivetrain and trims

Engines and drivetrain

The core US engine is the 2.0-litre EcoBoost turbocharged four-cylinder, producing roughly 245–250 hp and offered with front-wheel drive or intelligent all-wheel drive. Earlier second-generation cars could be had with a 3.5-litre naturally aspirated V6 around 280 hp.

Which trim makes sense

The Edge is a five-seat, two-row SUV only. US trims include SE, SEL, Titanium and, from 2019, the ST and later the ST-Line appearance package.

Vehicle selection

North American market and suitability

Supply on the US market

Because the Edge sold in large numbers for well over a decade, American inventory is deep and varied, from high-mileage fleet SEs to well-kept low-mileage Titaniums and ST models.

Who benefits from importing

The Edge suits a buyer who wants a roomy, comfortable SUV for two rows of passengers, a large boot and relaxed motorway manners, without paying for seven seats.

Pre-purchase review

Model-specific inspection points

Known weak points and maintenance

The Edge is generally durable, but a few weak points recur. On all-wheel-drive cars, the power transfer unit (PTU) can suffer from overheating and fluid degradation, sometimes leading to leaks or failure if the fluid was never changed; verifying PTU service is worthwhile. Early second-generation cars occasionally showed brake-system faults tied to sensors, addressed under recall.

Germany and Europe

Differences, adaptation and registration

US and EU spec compared

US Edges display speed in mph, use amber turn-signal markers, and normally omit a rear fog lamp that German registration requires.

TÜV, modifications and registration

Plan for a rear fog lamp, European-approved headlights, and confirmation of the odometer reading. Cars with the panoramic roof and full LED lighting sometimes need extra documentation.

USCar Trader services

Inspection, purchase processing and escrow

As a buyer based in Germany, you do not have to inspect the vehicle yourself in the United States or Canada. Within the agreed scope, USCar Trader can coordinate document review, a separately commissioned on-site inspection and purchase processing.

  • Vehicle profile and history: The profile can show the VIN, US title status and available history records. No data source guarantees that every earlier event was reported.
  • Optional CARFAX report: Additional reported maintenance or service entries can be included. The report is not a complete service book or proof of every interval.
  • On-site inspection / USCT AutoCheck: USCar Trader can arrange a separately booked vehicle inspection. Agreed visible and accessible areas are documented. Road or functional tests require suitable access and seller approval; the visual review is not a lift inspection or workshop diagnosis.
  • Purchase processing and escrow: After approval, USCar Trader can coordinate seller contact, negotiation, contract and the escrow and import service. Fees, payment route and responsibilities are recorded in advance.
  • Recalls: Open safety recalls can be checked by VIN through the NHTSA recall search; they do not describe overall condition.

Covered inspection points are agreed in advance. An on-site inspection records condition at the appointment and is not a guarantee.

Next step: Before commissioning, USCar Trader and the customer agree which document, history, inspection and transaction checks suit the vehicle and are included in the service. This records what was actually checked.

Questions and answers

Common questions about importing this model

Does this vehicle automatically qualify for a 0% import-duty rate?

No, not automatically. A 0% EU import-duty rate may be available for a vehicle covered by Regulation (EU) 2026/1455 that has US origin and is imported directly into the EU. CETA may apply to a vehicle with preferential Canadian origin. Whether the requirements are met is assessed for the individual case. Please contact USCar Trader before purchase; we review the possible duty benefit and provide non-binding support. Import VAT and other costs are assessed separately.

How is import VAT treated when importing a Ford Edge?

Import VAT and other taxes or costs are assessed separately under the applicable rules and the circumstances of the individual case. A blanket answer for every vehicle would not be reliable.

Which Edge is the best used buy?

A post-2019 second-generation car. The 2.0 EcoBoost suits daily use; the 2.7 ST is the choice for performance.

What is the PTU problem I keep reading about?

The power transfer unit on AWD Edges can overheat and leak if its fluid is never serviced. Buy a car with documented fluid changes and no whining from the unit.

Will a US Edge pass German TÜV?

Yes, after fitting a rear fog lamp, European-approved headlights and confirming mileage documentation.

Is the Edge available with seven seats?

No. The Edge is strictly a two-row, five-seat SUV. For three rows you would look at a different model.

How economical is the 2.0 EcoBoost?

It is the most efficient Edge and reasonable for the class, though real-world figures depend on AWD and driving style.

How can a specific Ford Edge be checked from Germany?

Available VIN, title and history information can be reviewed in the vehicle profile. USCar Trader can also arrange a separately booked on-site inspection within a scope agreed in advance.
