Choose a specific vehicle. Where data is available, its detail page shows the import cost calculation. We assess any possible duty benefit with you before purchase.

Important: A 0% EU import-duty rate may be available for a vehicle covered by Regulation (EU) 2026/1455 that has US origin and is imported directly into the EU. CETA may apply to a vehicle with preferential Canadian origin. Whether the requirements are met is assessed for the individual case. Ford Ecosport

The Ford EcoSport is Ford's smallest crossover, and the North American version is a distinct beast from anything Europe kept on sale.

Model profile

Model history and generations

From launch to today

The EcoSport nameplate dates back to 2003 in South America, but North America only ever received the facelifted second generation. It launched as a 2018 model and was quietly discontinued after the 2022 model year, when Ford pruned its US car and small-crossover range. Every US EcoSport therefore falls into a tight 2018 to 2022 window.

Powertrain and equipment

Engines, drivetrain and trims

Engines and drivetrain in detail

Two engines were offered. The base unit is the 1.0-litre EcoBoost turbocharged three-cylinder, rated around 123 hp and 125 lb-ft, driving the front wheels only through a six-speed automatic.

Trim levels and variants

US buyers chose from S, SE, SES and Titanium trims, all in a single five-door tall-hatch body. The signature feature is the side-hinged swing tailgate that opens to the curb rather than lifting upward, along with an externally mounted or hidden spare depending on year.

Vehicle selection

North American market and suitability

Used availability in the USA

Because the EcoSport sold in reasonable fleet and lease volumes but never developed a cult following, supply on the US used market is healthy and turnover is quick.

When importing makes sense

An imported EcoSport makes sense for someone who wants a small, easy-to-park US-spec crossover, perhaps a Titanium 4WD combination or a colour Ford never sold here, or a buyer sourcing a specific clean example rather than shopping the thin European used pool.

Pre-purchase review

Model-specific inspection points

Reliability and common problems

The 2.0-litre Ti-VCT is the sturdier choice and has few chronic faults beyond routine wear. The 1.0-litre EcoBoost three-cylinder is the engine to inspect carefully: earlier versions of this family had a wet timing belt that runs in oil and needs replacement on schedule, plus a history of coolant-intrusion concerns on the very early European units.

Germany and Europe

Differences, adaptation and registration

How US versions differ

US-market headlights use the FMVSS/SAE beam pattern, which differs from the ECE pattern required in the EU, so they may need adjustment or replacement with ECE-compliant units for registration.

From US purchase to registration

The assessment depends on the specific vehicle and the circumstances of the transaction. Please contact USCar Trader before purchase; we review any possible duty benefit and provide non-binding support. Import VAT and other costs are considered separately.

TÜV, approval and license plates

Typical work for German approval includes fitting a rear fog lamp, adjusting or replacing headlights for European beam patterns, confirming the speedometer and odometer read in km/h and km, and documenting the emissions and noise data.

USCar Trader services

Inspection, purchase processing and escrow

As a buyer based in Germany, you do not have to inspect the vehicle yourself in the United States or Canada. Within the agreed scope, USCar Trader can coordinate document review, a separately commissioned on-site inspection and purchase processing.

  • Vehicle profile and history: The profile can show the VIN, US title status and available history records. No data source guarantees that every earlier event was reported.
  • Optional CARFAX report: Additional reported maintenance or service entries can be included. The report is not a complete service book or proof of every interval.
  • On-site inspection / USCT AutoCheck: USCar Trader can arrange a separately booked vehicle inspection. Agreed visible and accessible areas are documented. Road or functional tests require suitable access and seller approval; the visual review is not a lift inspection or workshop diagnosis.
  • Purchase processing and escrow: After approval, USCar Trader can coordinate seller contact, negotiation, contract and the escrow and import service. Fees, payment route and responsibilities are recorded in advance.
  • Recalls: Open safety recalls can be checked by VIN through the NHTSA recall search; they do not describe overall condition.

Covered inspection points are agreed in advance. An on-site inspection records condition at the appointment and is not a guarantee.

Next step: Before commissioning, USCar Trader and the customer agree which document, history, inspection and transaction checks suit the vehicle and are included in the service. This records what was actually checked.

Questions and answers

Common questions about importing this model

Can I import any used Ford EcoSport from the USA?

Yes. US-spec EcoSports from 2018 to 2022 are eligible for private import and individual approval in Germany once the lighting and instrumentation are brought to European standard.

Does this vehicle automatically qualify for a 0% import-duty rate?

No, not automatically. A 0% EU import-duty rate may be available for a vehicle covered by Regulation (EU) 2026/1455 that has US origin and is imported directly into the EU. CETA may apply to a vehicle with preferential Canadian origin. Whether the requirements are met is assessed for the individual case. Please contact USCar Trader before purchase; we review the possible duty benefit and provide non-binding support. Import VAT and other costs are assessed separately.

How is import VAT treated when importing a Ford Ecosport?

Import VAT and other taxes or costs are assessed separately under the applicable rules and the circumstances of the individual case. A blanket answer for every vehicle would not be reliable.

Which engine is more reliable?

The 2.0-litre Ti-VCT four is the lower-risk choice. The 1.0 EcoBoost is fine when maintained but demands closer inspection of its timing belt and cooling system.

Does the US EcoSport have all-wheel drive?

Only the 2.0-litre version offered Ford's Intelligent 4WD. The 1.0 EcoBoost is front-wheel drive.

How long does an import take?

Sourcing, ocean freight and clearance typically span several weeks. Ocean transit alone is usually a few weeks depending on port schedules.

Will parts be a problem in Europe?

Mechanically it shares much with European Ford small cars, so servicing is manageable, though some US-specific trim and electronics items may need ordering.

Can USCar Trader find a specific trim?

Yes. As a broker we search the US market for the exact trim, drivetrain and condition you want rather than selling from stock.
