Dodge Charger
Importing a used Dodge Charger from the USA
The Dodge Charger is the last of the true American muscle sedans: four doors, rear-wheel drive and, in its most desirable forms, a big pushrod HEMI V8. Nothing quite like it has existed in Europe, which is why importing a used Charger from the USA is the only realistic way to own one. As an independent broker, USCar Trader locates the right car, verifies its history and manages transport and paperwork so you can concentrate on choosing the engine and trim you want.

Model history: years and generations
The modern Charger arrived for 2006 on the rear-drive LX platform, developed with Mercedes-Benz-derived components from the DaimlerChrysler era. A significant refresh came for 2011 on the updated LD platform, bringing sharper styling, the new eight-speed automatic and a much improved interior. This generation ran, with continual updates, through the 2023 model year and became the definitive muscle four-door. A new Charger generation launched afterwards spanning electric Daytona and petrol Sixpack variants, but the deep, affordable used market — and the classic naturally aspirated and supercharged HEMIs — lives in the 2006–2023 cars, which is what most importers seek.
Engines, transmissions and drive
The Charger's engine range is its main appeal. Entry cars used V6 units — the early 2.7 and 3.5 litre, later the 3.6-litre Pentastar (around 292–300 hp). The heart of the range is the 5.7-litre HEMI V8 in the R/T (roughly 370 hp). Above that sit the SRT models: the 6.1-litre and later 6.4-litre 392 HEMI (around 485 hp), and the supercharged 6.2-litre Hellcat producing 707 to 717 hp, with the Redeye pushing to 797 hp. Transmissions moved from a five-speed to the excellent ZF-based eight-speed automatic. Rear-wheel drive is standard, and V6 cars offered all-wheel drive for winter states.
Equipment lines and body styles
The Charger is a four-door sedan throughout this generation. The US trim ladder runs SE/SXT (V6), R/T (5.7 HEMI), Scat Pack (6.4 392) and the SRT Hellcat range at the top, with special editions like Daytona and Scat Pack Widebody along the way. Options worth seeking include the sunroof, upgraded Alpine or Harman Kardon audio, adaptive dampers on SRT cars and the various appearance and performance packages.
The US used market
Chargers sold in huge numbers as everything from police cars and rental fleet sedans to enthusiast-owned V8s, so the used market is vast and varied. That breadth means you must read each car carefully: fleet and rental V6s are plentiful and cheap, while cherished R/T, Scat Pack and Hellcat cars command a premium and deserve a close history check. Low-mileage, single-owner V8 examples appear regularly. Southern and western cars again tend to be the cleanest underneath.
Is an import right for you?
The Charger suits the buyer who wants genuine V8 muscle with four doors and everyday usability — a car you can seat a family in and still light up the rear tyres. If your priority is the Hellcat's supercharged drama or the Scat Pack's 392 soundtrack, the US market is where those cars live in volume. Buyers wanting low running costs or a compact footprint should look elsewhere; the Charger is unapologetically large and thirsty.

Common issues buyers should know
The HEMI V8 and ZF eight-speed are fundamentally durable, but there are known items. Some 5.7 HEMI engines exhibit lifter or camshaft wear and the well-known HEMI "tick", so a documented service history and a careful listen at idle are worthwhile. The earlier 2.7-litre V6 was prone to sludge if oil changes were neglected and is best avoided. Electrical gremlins in the TIPM (Totally Integrated Power Module) affected some earlier LD cars, causing intermittent starting or accessory faults. On SRT and Hellcat cars, check for hard use, aftermarket tuning and clutch or driveline stress, and confirm cooling components are healthy. Rear differential and driveshaft wear can appear on abused V8s. With a clean history, Charger reliability is reasonable for a big, powerful sedan.
Differences from the European version
US Chargers have mph speedometers, US-market lighting, US navigation and radio bands, and generally no factory rear fog lamp. Emissions and OBD data are US-specification. These are standard conversion points for European approval rather than obstacles.
Import step by step
Selection of the right car and engine; VIN and plant-of-origin verification; secured escrow payment; ocean freight to a European port such as Bremerhaven or Rotterdam; customs clearance on arrival; TÜV inspection and individual approval; and finally registration. USCar Trader coordinates each stage as your broker.
Customs and taxes: what applies
In short: the 0% duty rate applies only with documented US origin (VIN/plant) – German import VAT of 19% is always due.
Import duty depends on documented origin. Under Regulations (EU) 2026/1455 and 2026/1461, vehicles with provable US origin and direct transport can qualify for 0% duty (in force since 1 July 2026, through 31 December 2029). The Charger needs particular care here: this generation was assembled in Brampton, Ontario, Canada, so it is a US-market car that is not necessarily US-built. A US-origin claim cannot be assumed — the plant of build must be checked against the VIN, and the duty rate follows from the actual origin. The 19% German import VAT (Einfuhrumsatzsteuer) applies separately in every case. We never promise 0% before the origin is confirmed.
Modifications and single-vehicle approval
Typical approval work includes converting the lighting to ECE standards, fitting a rear fog lamp, verifying the speedometer and documenting emissions data. Any aftermarket exhaust or suspension must be documented. After the Einzelabnahme, registration proceeds normally.
What to verify before buying
Verify the VIN against the title and confirm the plant of build for the duty question. Pull a Carfax or AutoCheck history and check for fleet/rental and accident records. Listen for HEMI lifter tick and review oil-change history. On SRT/Hellcat cars check for tuning, hard use and cooling condition. Inspect the underbody for corrosion. Confirm the transmission shifts cleanly. Confirm the title is clean, not salvage or rebuilt.
Common questions
Can I import a used Dodge Charger to Germany?
Yes. A used Charger from the US market can be imported and registered after individual approval and the required modifications.
Does the Charger qualify for 0% import duty?
Not automatically. Because this generation is built in Canada, the plant must be verified via the VIN; the duty rate depends on the actual origin.
Do I always pay import VAT?
Yes. The 19% German import VAT applies to every imported vehicle regardless of origin.
Which engine is the one to have?
The 5.7 HEMI R/T is the accessible V8; the 6.4 Scat Pack and supercharged Hellcat are the performance icons.
Is the Charger reliable?
Reasonable for its class if the HEMI service history is clean and earlier TIPM issues have been resolved.
How is the Charger transported?
By container or RoRo ocean freight to a European port such as Bremerhaven or Rotterdam.
What changes are needed for TUV?
Lighting conversion, a rear fog lamp, speedometer verification and documentation of any aftermarket parts.
Is USCar Trader a dealer?
No. USCar Trader is an independent broker and intermediary, not a franchised dealer.
