Buick Envision

Importing a used Buick Envision from the USA

The Buick Envision is one of those quietly capable compact luxury SUVs that Americans buy in large numbers but Europeans rarely see. That gap is exactly what makes it interesting as a private import. If you want a well-equipped, comfortable five-seater with a turbocharged engine and available all-wheel drive, and you are prepared to buy used, the American market offers plenty of low-mileage examples. USCar Trader works as an independent broker on your behalf: we source, vet and ship the car, but we never hold a manufacturer franchise and we take no hidden margin on the vehicle itself.

From launch to today

Buick launched the Envision in China in 2014 and brought it to the United States for the 2016 model year, filling the space between the small Encore and the three-row Enclave. This first generation (2016 to 2020) rode on GM's D2XX platform and was facelifted for 2019 with a revised grille and updated infotainment. The second generation arrived for 2021, noticeably lower and wider, with sharper styling, a digital instrument cluster and the upmarket Avenir trim at the top of the range. Both generations were assembled in China by SAIC-GM and exported to North America, which is a detail that matters for European customs and one we cover below.

Engines and drivetrain in detail

Early first-generation cars used a naturally aspirated 2.5-litre four (around 197 hp) paired with a six-speed automatic, while the more desirable versions carried GM's 2.0-litre turbo four (roughly 252 hp) with a smooth six-speed. The second generation standardised the 2.0-litre turbocharged LSY engine, rated near 228 hp and 350 Nm, mated to a nine-speed automatic. Front-wheel drive is standard; the twin-clutch all-wheel-drive system is optional and well worth seeking out for German winters. Real-world fuel consumption is reasonable for the class, and the turbo pulls cleanly from low revs.

Trim levels and variants

The Envision is offered only as a five-door, five-seat SUV. US trim walk runs from Preferred through Essence to the loaded Avenir, which adds quilted leather, ventilated front seats, a head-up display, adaptive suspension on later cars and a Bose audio system. Look for the Technology and Convenience option packages, which bundle adaptive cruise, lane-keeping and a surround-view camera. Because American buyers spec generously, many used examples are far better equipped than a comparable European compact SUV.

Used availability in the USA

Supply is healthy. The Envision sells in steady volume across the US, so you will find a broad spread of model years, colours and trims, typically with the moderate annual mileage common to American commuter SUVs. Two- to five-year-old cars with full service history and a clean title are the sweet spot. Southern and western states tend to yield rust-free bodies and well-preserved interiors, which is why we concentrate sourcing there. Condition, history and options drive the decision, not headline sticker figures.

When importing makes sense

An Envision suits the buyer who wants genuine luxury-brand comfort without the badge premium of German rivals, and who values rarity on the road at home. It is a strong fit for families, long-distance drivers and anyone who has struggled to find a well-specified used compact SUV locally. If you specifically want the turbo AWD Avenir, importing is often the only realistic route, since it was never sold new in Europe.

Reliability and common problems

The Envision is generally dependable, but a few Buick Envision common problems are worth knowing before you buy. The 2.0-litre turbo can be sensitive to oil quality and intervals, so evidence of regular oil changes matters; carbon build-up on the intake valves is a known trait of GM direct-injection fours over higher mileage. Some owners report the nine-speed automatic hunting between gears at low speed, usually a software matter rather than a fault. Watch for the occasional infotainment reboot and check the electric tailgate and panoramic roof drains. Nothing here is unusual for the segment, but Buick Envision reliability rests heavily on a documented service record.

How US versions differ

American cars run amber rear indicators integrated differently from European norms, and the headlights are built to US photometric standards. Expect miles per hour on the cluster, US-band radio, and a tyre pressure display in psi. The safety and driver-assist tech generally transfers well, but the lighting and speedometer are the items the TUEV will scrutinise. GM's US navigation maps are of limited use here, though smartphone mirroring covers everyday routing.

From US purchase to registration

The process runs in a clear order: vehicle selection and a full options check; VIN and origin verification to establish the build plant; secure payment through escrow so funds are only released on delivery; ocean freight in a container or RoRo to Bremerhaven or Rotterdam; customs clearance on arrival; a German TUEV individual approval (Einzelabnahme); and finally local registration. We coordinate each stage and keep you informed throughout.

Costs, duty and taxes at a glance

In short: the 0% duty rate applies only with documented US origin (VIN/plant) – German import VAT of 19% is always due.

Two separate charges apply on entry to the EU. First, the import duty: the 0% rate under Regulations (EU) 2026/1455 and 2026/1461 (in force since 1 July 2026, direct transport, valid until 31 December 2029) applies only to vehicles with provable US origin. The Envision has historically been built in China and exported to the US, so the duty rate depends on the actual plant shown by the VIN and documents; do not assume 0%. Second, the German import VAT (Einfuhrumsatzsteuer) of 19% always applies, calculated on the customs value plus duty and freight. We state both clearly and add no margin of our own.

TÜV, approval and license plates

Typical work for approval includes converting or verifying the headlights to European specification, confirming a functioning rear fog lamp (US cars often lack one), and documenting the odometer reading in kilometres or having the cluster read correctly. A COC is rarely available for a US car, so an individual approval with a test report is the standard route. Once passed, you register the car at your local authority.

Pre-purchase checklist

Before committing, confirm the VIN matches every document and decodes to the build plant. Order a Carfax or AutoCheck history to check for accidents, title branding and odometer consistency. Inspect for underbody corrosion, especially on cars from northern states. Verify a complete service record with oil-change proof. Confirm the title is clean, not salvage or rebuilt, and check that all keys, the roof and driver-assist features work.

Import FAQ

Where is the Buick Envision built?

Both US generations were assembled in China by SAIC-GM and exported to North America, which is why the origin and VIN check is essential for customs.

Can I get the 0% EU import duty on an Envision?

Only if US origin is provable. Given the Chinese build history, the rate depends on the documented plant, so we never guarantee duty-free entry.

Does the 19% import VAT always apply?

Yes. The German Einfuhrumsatzsteuer of 19% is due on every import, separate from any duty.

Is the turbo AWD version worth importing?

For many buyers, yes, because the well-equipped Avenir AWD was never sold new in Europe and offers strong value used.

What mileage should I look for?

Two- to five-year-old cars with moderate, well-documented mileage and full service history are the sweet spot.

Will the headlights pass TUEV?

US headlights usually need verification or conversion, and a rear fog lamp must be present. This is standard individual-approval work.

How long does the import take?

Allow roughly six to ten weeks from purchase to registration, depending on freight schedules and the approval appointment.

Do you buy the car yourself?

No. USCar Trader is an independent broker acting on your behalf, without a dealer margin on the vehicle.
