Buick Enclave

Importing a used Buick Enclave from the USA

The Buick Enclave is one of the most sensible three-row crossovers to come out of General Motors, and it rarely appears on European roads — which is exactly why importing a used example from the United States is appealing. It sits above the compact class, offering genuine seven- or six-seat space, a quiet cabin and a naturally aspirated V6 that American families have trusted for years. As an independent broker for used US vehicles, USCar Trader helps you source, vet and ship an Enclave that matches your budget and specification. This page walks through the model in the depth you need before you commit to an import.

Model history: years and generations

The first-generation Enclave (2008–2017) launched Buick's move into premium crossovers, built on GM's Lambda platform it shared with the GMC Acadia and Chevrolet Traverse. A mild facelift in 2013 brought a revised grille and updated interior tech. The second generation arrived for the 2018 model year on the C1XX platform, shedding weight, gaining a nine-speed automatic and adopting the brand's floating roofline. Buick refreshed it again for 2022 with new front and rear styling, a larger infotainment screen and the range-topping Avenir treatment. A comprehensively redesigned third generation debuted for 2025 with a turbocharged four-cylinder and a much larger portrait touchscreen, so the used US market now spans three distinct eras.

Engines, transmissions and drive

For most of its life the Enclave used GM's 3.6-litre LGX (and earlier LLT/LFX) direct-injection V6, producing roughly 288–310 hp depending on year, paired with a six-speed automatic in the first generation and a nine-speed automatic from 2018. Drive goes to the front wheels as standard, with a twin-clutch all-wheel-drive system optional on most trims — worth seeking out for German winters. The 2025 redesign switched to a 2.5-litre turbocharged four making around 328 hp. Fuel is regular US gasoline throughout, so no special adaptation is required for Germany. If you want the proven, low-stress powertrain, a second-generation 3.6 V6 with AWD is the sweet spot.

Equipment lines and body styles

The Enclave has always been a single body style: a long, five-door crossover with three rows. Trim walk in the second generation ran Preferred, Essence, Premium and the luxury-focused Avenir, the latter adding quilted leather, a heads-up display, unique wheels and extra sound insulation. Second-row captain's chairs (six seats total) or a bench (seven seats) were both offered. Look for the Avenir or Premium if you want the equipment level closest to a European premium SUV.

The US used market

Enclaves are plentiful across the US, particularly in family-friendly suburban states, so supply of well-kept examples is strong. Typical import candidates are 2018–2023 cars with 40,000 to 110,000 miles (roughly 65,000–175,000 km). Southern and western states tend to yield rust-free bodies and undercarriages, which matters for a smooth German registration. Many were leased and dealer-serviced, so a clean maintenance record is realistic to find. We avoid Euro pricing here, but condition and history vary widely, which is where a broker's pre-purchase inspection earns its keep.

Is an import right for you?

The Enclave suits buyers who want a spacious, comfort-first family SUV that stands apart from the usual German three-row crowd. If you value a hushed highway ride, easy third-row access and a torquey V6 over sharp handling or badge prestige, it fits. It is less ideal if you need a small footprint for tight cities or the lowest possible running costs — this is a large vehicle with a thirsty six. For a family that covers long distances and wants something distinctive, importing a used Buick Enclave from the USA makes real sense.

Common issues buyers should know

The 3.6 V6 is broadly durable, but there are known Buick Enclave common problems to check. Earlier LLT engines were prone to timing-chain stretch and excessive oil consumption if oil changes were neglected; the later LGX is much improved but still benefits from strict service intervals. The six-speed automatic in first-generation cars can develop wave-plate failures, while the nine-speed occasionally shifts abruptly until a software update is applied. Water pumps, front-end suspension bushings and power-steering leaks appear with age. Infotainment glitches and HVAC actuator noise are common minor annoyances. A documented service history and a compression/oil-consumption check are the best defence for Buick Enclave reliability.

Differences from the European version

US-market Enclaves run amber rear turn signals in most years but lack a rear fog lamp, and the headlight beam pattern is set for right-hand traffic — both must be addressed for German approval. Speedometers read primarily in mph, and the tyre-pressure and warning systems use US units. Equipment such as heated/ventilated seats, wireless charging and adaptive cruise is common on higher trims and transfers without issue. There is no diesel or plug-in variant, which simplifies emissions documentation.

Import step by step

The process runs in a clear sequence: we shortlist suitable cars and confirm specification, then perform a VIN and origin check to establish the build plant. Payment is handled through escrow for security, after which the vehicle moves to a port and is booked for ocean freight (container or RoRo) to a German port such as Bremerhaven. On arrival we handle customs clearance, arrange any required modifications, present the car for TÜV individual approval (Einzelabnahme), and finally support registration at your local authority.

Customs and taxes: what applies

In short: the 0% duty rate applies only with documented US origin (VIN/plant) – German import VAT of 19% is always due.

Two separate charges apply. First, EU import duty: under Regulations (EU) 2026/1455 and 2026/1461, a 0% rate can apply to US-origin vehicles imported directly, valid from 1 July 2026 until 31 December 2029 — but only where US origin is proven by VIN and plant data. The Enclave has generally been built in Lansing, Michigan, which often supports a US-origin claim, yet this must be verified per VIN and is never guaranteed. Where origin cannot be proven, the standard 10% passenger-car duty applies. Second, the 19% German import VAT (Einfuhrumsatzsteuer) always applies on the customs value regardless of origin. As a broker we do not add a hidden margin to these state charges.

Modifications and single-vehicle approval

Typical modifications for TÜV are converting or adding a rear fog lamp, adjusting or replacing headlights for right-hand traffic, and confirming the amber/red rear lighting complies. The odometer must be presented and can usually stay in miles if clearly documented, though many owners convert the cluster reading. Once the Einzelabnahme certificate is issued, registration and German plates follow.

What to verify before buying

Before buying, verify the VIN against a Carfax or AutoCheck report for accident and title history. Confirm a clean (not salvage or rebuilt) title. Inspect for rust on the subframe and rear suspension mounts. Review documented oil-change and timing-service records. Check the transmission for smooth shifts and the V6 for oil consumption. Test all AWD and electronic functions. Confirm mileage consistency across service entries.

Common questions

Can a used Buick Enclave qualify for 0% EU import duty?

Only if its US origin is proven via VIN and build plant and it is imported directly under the 2026 regulations. Michigan-built cars often qualify, but it is verified case by case, never guaranteed.

Does the 19% import VAT always apply?

Yes. The German Einfuhrumsatzsteuer of 19% is due on every import regardless of the duty outcome.

Is the Enclave reliable enough to import?

The later 3.6 LGX V6 is generally dependable when serviced; check for oil consumption and timing history on higher-mileage cars.

Which years are best to import?

Second-generation 2018–2023 cars with AWD offer the best blend of modern equipment and proven mechanicals.

Will TÜV accept a US Enclave?

Yes, after lighting adjustments and a rear fog lamp are fitted and the Einzelabnahme is passed.

How is it shipped?

By container or RoRo ocean freight to a German port, followed by customs clearance.

Are parts available in Germany?

Wear items are widely available; some body and trim parts are sourced from the US, which we can assist with.

Petrol only?

Yes, all Enclaves are gasoline; no diesel or plug-in version exists.
