Model profile

Model history and generations

Production years and key changes

The SQ7 arrived on the second-generation Q7 (the 4M platform, from 2016 globally). US buyers first got the petrol SQ7 for the 2020 model year, powered by the 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8. A comprehensive facelift for 2020–2021 sharpened the styling, updated the dual-touchscreen MMI interior and revised the driver-assistance suite.

Powertrain and equipment

Engines, drivetrain and trims

What is under the hood

The US SQ7 uses the 4.0-litre TFSI twin-turbo V8, producing around 500 hp and 568–770 Nm of torque depending on model year and overboost, driving through an eight-speed Tiptronic automatic and quattro permanent all-wheel drive.

Trims and body styles

The SQ7 is a five-door, three-row SUV with standard seven-seat capacity (a six-seat captain's-chair layout was optional).

Vehicle selection

North American market and suitability

What the US market offers

Because the US petrol SQ7 started at 2020, the used pool is young: expect 2020–2023 cars with 20,000–60,000 miles.

Who this import is for

The SQ7 suits a buyer who needs seven seats but refuses to give up performance, and who has found the right US specification.

Pre-purchase review

Model-specific inspection points

Reliability: trouble spots to check

The SQ7 is well-engineered but mechanically dense, so the Audi SQ7 common problems tend to be maintenance-cost items. The 4.0 TFSI V8 is strong, but its packaging is tight and repairs to items like the water pump, coolant lines and the valley area can be labour-intensive. The 48-volt electric compressor and its associated wiring are worth verifying for fault codes.

Germany and Europe

Differences, adaptation and registration

US vs. Europe differences

The biggest difference is engine choice: the US SQ7 is petrol-only, so there is no diesel to worry about on import.

From modifications to registration

Typical work includes adding or enabling a rear fog lamp, adapting the headlights to European beam requirements, and documenting the odometer in miles.

USCar Trader services

Inspection, purchase processing and escrow

As a buyer based in Germany, you do not have to inspect the vehicle yourself in the United States or Canada. Within the agreed scope, USCar Trader can coordinate document review, a separately commissioned on-site inspection and purchase processing.

  • Vehicle profile and history: The profile can show the VIN, US title status and available history records. No data source guarantees that every earlier event was reported.
  • Optional CARFAX report: Additional reported maintenance or service entries can be included. The report is not a complete service book or proof of every interval.
  • On-site inspection / USCT AutoCheck: USCar Trader can arrange a separately booked vehicle inspection. Agreed visible and accessible areas are documented. Road or functional tests require suitable access and seller approval; the visual review is not a lift inspection or workshop diagnosis.
  • Purchase processing and escrow: After approval, USCar Trader can coordinate seller contact, negotiation, contract and the escrow and import service. Fees, payment route and responsibilities are recorded in advance.
  • Recalls: Open safety recalls can be checked by VIN through the NHTSA recall search; they do not describe overall condition.

Covered inspection points are agreed in advance. An on-site inspection records condition at the appointment and is not a guarantee.

Next step: Before commissioning, USCar Trader and the customer agree which document, history, inspection and transaction checks suit the vehicle and are included in the service. This records what was actually checked.

Questions and answers

Common questions about importing this model

Does this vehicle automatically qualify for a 0% import-duty rate?

No, not automatically. A 0% EU import-duty rate may be available for a vehicle covered by Regulation (EU) 2026/1455 that has US origin and is imported directly into the EU. CETA may apply to a vehicle with preferential Canadian origin. Whether the requirements are met is assessed for the individual case. Please contact USCar Trader before purchase; we review the possible duty benefit and provide non-binding support. Import VAT and other costs are assessed separately.

How is import VAT treated when importing a Audi SQ7?

Import VAT and other taxes or costs are assessed separately under the applicable rules and the circumstances of the individual case. A blanket answer for every vehicle would not be reliable.

Is the US SQ7 a diesel or petrol?

Petrol only. The US never received the European TDI diesel SQ7, so every imported US car has the 4.0 twin-turbo V8.

Is the SQ7 reliable?

It is well-built but complex; budget for premium maintenance. A full service history and a pre-purchase inspection are the best protection.

How many seats does it have?

Seven as standard, with an optional six-seat captain's-chair layout on some US cars.

What modifications does TÜV require?

Usually a rear fog lamp and headlight adaptation, plus documentation of the odometer. A near-standard car is easiest to approve.

What mileage should I expect?

Because the US petrol car started in 2020, most examples are 2020 to 2023 with 20,000 to 60,000 miles and often full dealer history.

Will the US warranty transfer?

Treat the car as out of warranty in Europe; factory coverage does not carry across regions identically.
