Model profile

Model history and generations

From launch to today

The S5 badge launched in 2007 on the B8 platform, initially as a Coupe powered by a naturally aspirated 4.2 FSI V8. Audi added the Sportback (five-door) and Cabriolet, and with the 2012 B8.5 facelift dropped the V8 in favour of a supercharged 3.0 TFSI V6.

Powertrain and equipment

Engines, drivetrain and trims

Engines and drivetrain in detail

Three powertrains define the used S5. The early B8 uses the 4.2 FSI V8 (around 354 hp), a charismatic but maintenance-hungry engine. The B8.5 switched to a supercharged 3.0 TFSI producing roughly 333 hp.

Trim levels and variants

US buyers could order the S5 as a Coupe, a Sportback (from the B9 generation for America) and a Cabriolet. Trim walks were typically Premium Plus and Prestige, the latter adding the full Bang & Olufsen audio, adaptive cruise, head-up display and top-view cameras.

North American market and suitability

Used availability in the USA

Supply is deep. B9 cars from 2018 to 2021 turn up regularly with 40,000 to 90,000 miles, often one or two owners and complete dealer service records.

When importing makes sense

An imported S5 makes sense if you want a specific colour and options combination that German dealers rarely stock, or if you are chasing a clean, well-kept B9 that undercuts local asking prices even after freight, duty and VAT.

Pre-purchase review

Model-specific inspection points

Reliability and common problems

Audi S5 reliability depends heavily on which engine you buy. The 4.2 FSI V8 in early B8 cars is known for timing chain tensioner wear and carbon buildup on the intake valves — a proper walnut-blast cleaning is periodic maintenance, not a repair. The supercharged B8.5 3.0 TFSI suffers thermostat and water-pump failures and can develop supercharger and coolant issues if neglected.

Germany and Europe

Differences, adaptation and registration

How US versions differ

US-market S5s carry MPH-dominant instruments, US daytime running light logic, SiriusXM hardware and North American navigation mapping.

From US purchase to registration

The assessment depends on the specific vehicle and the circumstances of the transaction. Please contact USCar Trader before purchase; we review any possible duty benefit and provide non-binding support. Import VAT and other costs are considered separately.

TÜV, approval and license plates

US-market headlights use the FMVSS/SAE beam pattern, which differs from the ECE pattern required in the EU, so they may need adjustment or replacement with ECE-compliant units for registration.

USCar Trader services

Inspection, purchase processing and escrow

As a buyer based in Germany, you do not have to inspect the vehicle yourself in the United States or Canada. Within the agreed scope, USCar Trader can coordinate document review, a separately commissioned on-site inspection and purchase processing.

  • Vehicle profile and history: The profile can show the VIN, US title status and available history records. No data source guarantees that every earlier event was reported.
  • Optional CARFAX report: Additional reported maintenance or service entries can be included. The report is not a complete service book or proof of every interval.
  • On-site inspection / USCT AutoCheck: USCar Trader can arrange a separately booked vehicle inspection. Agreed visible and accessible areas are documented. Road or functional tests require suitable access and seller approval; the visual review is not a lift inspection or workshop diagnosis.
  • Purchase processing and escrow: After approval, USCar Trader can coordinate seller contact, negotiation, contract and the escrow and import service. Fees, payment route and responsibilities are recorded in advance.
  • Recalls: Open safety recalls can be checked by VIN through the NHTSA recall search; they do not describe overall condition.

Covered inspection points are agreed in advance. An on-site inspection records condition at the appointment and is not a guarantee.

Next step: Before commissioning, USCar Trader and the customer agree which document, history, inspection and transaction checks suit the vehicle and are included in the service. This records what was actually checked.

Questions and answers

Common questions about importing this model

Can I import any used Audi S5 from the USA?

Yes, provided it has a clean, verifiable title and passes German technical inspection after standard modifications.

Does this vehicle automatically qualify for a 0% import-duty rate?

No, not automatically. A 0% EU import-duty rate may be available for a vehicle covered by Regulation (EU) 2026/1455 that has US origin and is imported directly into the EU. CETA may apply to a vehicle with preferential Canadian origin. Whether the requirements are met is assessed for the individual case. Please contact USCar Trader before purchase; we review the possible duty benefit and provide non-binding support. Import VAT and other costs are assessed separately.

How is import VAT treated when importing a Audi S5?

Import VAT and other taxes or costs are assessed separately under the applicable rules and the circumstances of the individual case. A blanket answer for every vehicle would not be reliable.

Which S5 generation is the most reliable?

The B9 turbo V6 (2017 onward) is generally the most dependable, ahead of the supercharged B8.5 and the maintenance-heavy 4.2 V8.

Are US-market S5s hard to register in Germany?

No. After a rear fog lamp, headlight and odometer conversion, they pass TUEV and individual approval routinely.

How long does the import take?

From purchase to German plates it typically runs several weeks, driven mostly by ocean freight and customs scheduling.

Do you buy the car for me?

No. USCar Trader is an independent broker; we source and coordinate, and you remain the buyer without any hidden dealer margin.

How can a specific Audi S5 be checked from Germany?

Available VIN, title and history information can be reviewed in the vehicle profile. USCar Trader can also arrange a separately booked on-site inspection within a scope agreed in advance.
