Model history and generations

Importing a used Audi S4 from the USA

USCar Trader is an independent broker for used cars.

From launch to today

The S4 has run through several generations, and two are most relevant on the US used market.

Powertrain and equipment

Engines, drivetrain and trims

Engines and drivetrain in detail

The B8 S4 uses a 3.0-litre supercharged V6 (EA837, roughly 333 hp) paired with either a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed S tronic dual-clutch — the availability of a manual is a genuine draw for US buyers.

Trim levels and variants

In the US the S4 is sold only as a four-door sedan (the Avant estate and Sportback body styles were not offered there), which is worth remembering if you specifically want a wagon — you would import the European car instead.

Vehicle selection

North American market and suitability

Used availability in the USA

The S4 is a popular enthusiast car in the US, so the used pool is deep, with many well-kept, documented examples.

When importing makes sense

The S4 suits the driver who wants a discreet, all-weather performance sedan that is quick, comfortable and practical enough for daily use.

Pre-purchase review

Model-specific inspection points

Reliability and common problems

The supercharged B8 3.0 TFSI is generally robust but has known weak points: carbon build-up on the intake valves (common to direct-injection VAG engines and eventually needing a walnut-blast clean), thermostat and water-pump wear, and supercharger clutch or pulley noise on higher-mileage cars. Timing chain tensioner behaviour on some VAG V6s is worth checking with a cold-start listen.

Germany and Europe

Differences, adaptation and registration

How US versions differ

The S4 is fundamentally the same car worldwide, but US examples run miles-per-hour instruments, amber rear turn signals, no rear fog lamp, and US-band radio and connected services.

From US purchase to registration

The assessment depends on the specific vehicle and the circumstances of the transaction. Please contact USCar Trader before purchase; we review any possible duty benefit and provide non-binding support. Import VAT and other costs are considered separately.

TÜV, approval and license plates

US-market headlights use the FMVSS/SAE beam pattern, which differs from the ECE pattern required in the EU, so they may need adjustment or replacement with ECE-compliant units for registration.

USCar Trader services

Inspection, purchase processing and escrow

As a buyer based in Germany, you do not have to inspect the vehicle yourself in the United States or Canada. Within the agreed scope, USCar Trader can coordinate document review, a separately commissioned on-site inspection and purchase processing.

  • Vehicle profile and history: The profile can show the VIN, US title status and available history records. No data source guarantees that every earlier event was reported.
  • Optional CARFAX report: Additional reported maintenance or service entries can be included. The report is not a complete service book or proof of every interval.
  • On-site inspection / USCT AutoCheck: USCar Trader can arrange a separately booked vehicle inspection. Agreed visible and accessible areas are documented. Road or functional tests require suitable access and seller approval; the visual review is not a lift inspection or workshop diagnosis.
  • Purchase processing and escrow: After approval, USCar Trader can coordinate seller contact, negotiation, contract and the escrow and import service. Fees, payment route and responsibilities are recorded in advance.
  • Recalls: Open safety recalls can be checked by VIN through the NHTSA recall search; they do not describe overall condition.

Covered inspection points are agreed in advance. An on-site inspection records condition at the appointment and is not a guarantee.

Next step: Before commissioning, USCar Trader and the customer agree which document, history, inspection and transaction checks suit the vehicle and are included in the service. This records what was actually checked.

Questions and answers

Common questions about importing this model

Does this vehicle automatically qualify for a 0% import-duty rate?

No, not automatically. A 0% EU import-duty rate may be available for a vehicle covered by Regulation (EU) 2026/1455 that has US origin and is imported directly into the EU. CETA may apply to a vehicle with preferential Canadian origin. Whether the requirements are met is assessed for the individual case. Please contact USCar Trader before purchase; we review the possible duty benefit and provide non-binding support. Import VAT and other costs are assessed separately.

Which S4 generation should I import?

The B8/B8.5 (supercharged, manual available) appeals to enthusiasts who want a stick shift, while the B9 (turbo, automatic) is newer and quicker. Choose by drivetrain preference and condition.

Can I import an S4 Avant from the USA?

No — the US only sold the S4 sedan. For an Avant estate you would import a European-market car instead.

What are the main things to watch on an S4?

Intake carbon build-up, thermostat and water-pump wear, supercharger noise on B8 cars, and evidence of aggressive tuning. Prioritise a car with full service history.

How long does the import take?

Usually several weeks from purchase to registration, driven mainly by shipping plus customs and TÜV on arrival.

Is USCar Trader selling me the car?

No. We are an independent broker. We import the specific used car you choose and charge for the service, not a dealer margin.

Why import a German car from the USA at all?

For a specific configuration, colour or value not readily found locally — for example a manual B8 S4 — that makes sourcing from the US worthwhile.

How can a specific Audi S4 be checked from Germany?

Available VIN, title and history information can be reviewed in the vehicle profile. USCar Trader can also arrange a separately booked on-site inspection within a scope agreed in advance.
