Choose a specific vehicle. Where data is available, its detail page shows the import cost calculation. We assess any possible duty benefit with you before purchase.

Important: A 0% EU import-duty rate may be available for a vehicle covered by Regulation (EU) 2026/1455 that has US origin and is imported directly into the EU. CETA may apply to a vehicle with preferential Canadian origin. Whether the requirements are met is assessed for the individual case. Please contact us before purchase; we review the possible duty benefit and provide non-binding support through the process. Import VAT and other costs are assessed separately.

Model profile

Model history and generations

Production years and key changes

The first-generation R8 (Type 42, 2006–2015) launched with a 4.2-litre V8 (the FSI unit derived from Audi's motorsport experience) and later gained the 5.2-litre V10 shared with Lamborghini. A facelift arrived in 2012.

Engines, drivetrain and trims

What is under the hood

The heart of the R8 is its engine.

Trims and body styles

US buyers chose between the coupé and the Spyder soft-top. First-generation trims spanned V8, V10 and V10 Plus; the second generation offered V10, V10 Plus/Performance and the rear-drive models.

Vehicle selection

North American market and suitability

What the US market offers

Supply is concentrated in wealthier metros — Southern California, Florida, Texas, the New York area.

Who this import is for

Importing a used Audi R8 suits the buyer who wants a specific configuration — above all the gated manual, which the US kept longer than most markets — or a colour and options set that is scarce locally.

Pre-purchase review

Model-specific inspection points

Reliability: trouble spots to check

By supercar standards the R8 is unusually dependable — the V8 and V10 are robust engines with no forced induction to fail. That said, watch a few things. The first-generation R tronic gearbox is jerky and its clutch and pump can be expensive; many buyers prefer the manual for this reason. The magnetic-ride dampers can leak with age and are costly to replace.

Germany and Europe

Differences, adaptation and registration

US vs. Europe differences

US R8s carry amber side markers, US headlight patterns, an mph cluster and no rear fog lamp, all of which the TÜV addresses.

From modifications to registration

Typical approval work includes converting or coding the headlights, fitting a rear fog lamp, adding European indicators and confirming the speedometer reads in km/h.

USCar Trader services

Inspection, purchase processing and escrow

As a buyer based in Germany, you do not have to inspect the vehicle yourself in the United States or Canada. Within the agreed scope, USCar Trader can coordinate document review, a separately commissioned on-site inspection and purchase processing.

  • Vehicle profile and history: The profile can show the VIN, US title status and available history records. No data source guarantees that every earlier event was reported.
  • Optional CARFAX report: Additional reported maintenance or service entries can be included. The report is not a complete service book or proof of every interval.
  • On-site inspection / USCT AutoCheck: USCar Trader can arrange a separately booked vehicle inspection. Agreed visible and accessible areas are documented. Road or functional tests require suitable access and seller approval; the visual review is not a lift inspection or workshop diagnosis.
  • Purchase processing and escrow: After approval, USCar Trader can coordinate seller contact, negotiation, contract and the escrow and import service. Fees, payment route and responsibilities are recorded in advance.
  • Recalls: Open safety recalls can be checked by VIN through the NHTSA recall search; they do not describe overall condition.

Covered inspection points are agreed in advance. An on-site inspection records condition at the appointment and is not a guarantee.

Next step: Before commissioning, USCar Trader and the customer agree which document, history, inspection and transaction checks suit the vehicle and are included in the service. This records what was actually checked.

Questions and answers

Common questions about importing this model

Can I import a gated-manual Audi R8 from the USA?

Yes, and the US is one of the best sources for the open-gate six-speed manual, which was offered there on first-generation V8 and V10 cars. We can search specifically for one.

Does this vehicle automatically qualify for a 0% import-duty rate?

No, not automatically. A 0% EU import-duty rate may be available for a vehicle covered by Regulation (EU) 2026/1455 that has US origin and is imported directly into the EU. CETA may apply to a vehicle with preferential Canadian origin. Whether the requirements are met is assessed for the individual case. Please contact USCar Trader before purchase; we review the possible duty benefit and provide non-binding support. Import VAT and other costs are assessed separately.

How is import VAT treated when importing a Audi R8?

Import VAT and other taxes or costs are assessed separately under the applicable rules and the circumstances of the individual case. A blanket answer for every vehicle would not be reliable.

Is the R8 reliable enough to import with confidence?

For a supercar, yes. The naturally aspirated V8 and V10 are durable. Running costs are still high, so buy on documented history and budget for maintenance.

V8 or V10 — which should I look for?

The V8 is lighter and cheaper to run; the V10 is faster and now more collectible. Both are excellent — the right choice depends on your budget and intent.

Is shipping a supercar safe?

We recommend enclosed container shipping for the R8, which protects the car far better than roll-on/roll-off transport.

How long does the import take?

Typically several weeks from purchase to German plates, driven mainly by shipping and the TÜV appointment.

How can a specific Audi R8 be checked from Germany?

Available VIN, title and history information can be reviewed in the vehicle profile. USCar Trader can also arrange a separately booked on-site inspection within a scope agreed in advance.
