Rivian R1T
Importing a used Rivian R1T from the USA
The Rivian R1T is the electric adventure pickup that arrived in 2021 and reset expectations for what a battery-powered truck could do. It was never officially sold in Europe, so importing a used example from the US is the only route to putting one on German plates. Rivian builds the R1T at its plant in Normal, Illinois, meaning most examples carry a US-origin VIN — the detail that can support a 0% EU import duty on direct shipment from the USA, always subject to VIN and plant confirmation. USCar Trader is a broker for used US vehicles: we find the specific truck, verify its history and battery health, and handle transport and German registration. We are not a Rivian dealer and hold no franchise.
For a European buyer the R1T is genuinely rare and distinctive — a quad- or dual-motor electric truck with real off-road capability, a clever storage layout and long range. Here is what to know before importing one.

From launch to today
The R1T launched in the US in late 2021 as Rivian's first product, initially in a well-equipped Launch Edition and then Adventure and Explore packages. Early trucks used a quad-motor layout (one motor per wheel); Rivian later added more affordable dual-motor versions and different battery sizes (Standard, Large and Max packs). A significant 2024/2025 update (the second-generation R1) brought new in-house motors, revised electronics and a re-architected electrical system. When viewing a used R1T, the model year tells you the motor layout, battery pack and software generation.
Engines and drivetrain in detail
The R1T is fully electric with independent electric motors. Quad-motor versions place a motor at each wheel for around 800+ hp combined, delivering supercar acceleration and true torque-vectoring off-road ability; dual-motor versions are lighter on the wallet while still quick. Battery choices span roughly the mid-100s of kWh at the top (Max pack), with the Large pack the volume option. The truck features adjustable air suspension with a wide ride-height range and multiple drive modes for road, tow and off-road use. Charging is via CCS, and Rivian operates its own Adventure Network in North America; in Europe the truck would rely on the public CCS network.
Trim levels and variants
The R1T is a five-seat, four-door double-cab pickup with a relatively short bed, a lockable front trunk (frunk) and Rivian's signature gear tunnel behind the cab for extra lockable storage. US packages have included Launch Edition, Adventure and Explore, with battery and motor choices layered on top. Because these are used imports, the exact motor count, battery pack and equipment are defined by the individual VIN and build sheet, so confirm them before buying.
Used availability in the USA
The R1T is a low-volume, premium vehicle, so the used pool is smaller than for a Tesla, but a steady stream of well-kept trucks reaches the market, most of them recent (2022–2024) with moderate mileage. Many come from owners who used them lightly, and battery degradation on such examples tends to be limited — though it varies, so a battery health check is essential. We work from the live US market at the time of enquiry and do not quote fixed euro prices.
When importing makes sense
An imported R1T suits a buyer who wants something almost no one else on the road has: a capable, luxurious, long-range electric pickup with real off-road hardware and a genuinely useful storage layout. It rewards those who value the novelty and capability and who accept that servicing a niche US brand in Europe requires planning.

Reliability and common problems
As a young vehicle from a young manufacturer, the R1T has had teething issues rather than a long-term track record. Early trucks (2022) saw software bugs, occasional door and window-seal complaints, drive-unit and control-system faults handled under warranty, and a few reports of accessory and 12-volt gremlins. Rivian has pushed frequent over-the-air updates that resolved many early software problems, and the second-generation trucks moved to simpler in-house hardware. The main long-term unknowns are parts availability and service outside North America — plan for that before importing. Mechanically the air suspension, tyres (large and expensive) and the high-voltage battery are the components to inspect and verify, with battery state of health confirmed by diagnostic rather than the dashboard estimate.
How US versions differ
The R1T is a US-market vehicle through and through: US lighting, an mph-primary display (km/h selectable), and North American charging assumptions. It uses CCS, which is compatible with European DC chargers, but Rivian's own charging network and some connected features are US-centric, so expect to rely on the public network and to clarify which software features work in Europe. Servicing is the biggest practical difference — there is no established European dealer network, so factor in specialist support.
From US purchase to registration
The order is: choose the specific truck; run a VIN and origin check to confirm the Normal, Illinois build and history; secure payment via escrow; arrange inland transport and ocean freight to a European port; clear customs on arrival; present for technical inspection and individual approval (Einzelabnahme) at the TÜV; and register for German plates. Given the R1T's size and rarity, USCar Trader plans the logistics carefully and keeps you updated at each handover.
Costs, duty and taxes at a glance
Bottom line: what matters is the factory shown by the VIN – proven US origin unlocks 0% duty. The 19% import VAT always applies.
Two separate charges apply. EU import duty: since 1 July 2026, under Regulations (EU) 2026/1455 and 2026/1461, a 0% rate can apply to vehicles of provable US origin shipped directly from the USA, valid until 31 December 2029. The R1T is Illinois-built, so this is often available — but only the VIN and plant confirmation decide it, and we never promise it. Separately and in every case, German import VAT (Einfuhrumsatzsteuer) of 19% applies to the customs value. Both are statutory; USCar Trader adds no margin.
TÜV, approval and license plates
Approval typically involves lighting compliance (headlight beam pattern, rear fog lamp, indicator colour) and a km/h speed display, which the truck's software provides. The odometer reading is documented, and the vehicle's dimensions and weight class are noted for registration. As an EV there is no emissions test. Once the TÜV issues the individual approval, registration and plates follow.
Pre-purchase checklist
- Confirm the VIN and Normal, Illinois build to support the 0% duty check.
- Obtain a battery state-of-health report rather than the dashboard range estimate.
- Pull a Carfax or AutoCheck history and confirm a clean, non-salvage title.
- Check the model year for motor layout, battery pack and software generation.
- Inspect the air suspension, tyres and any off-road wear closely.
- Confirm the truck's software history and that early recalls/updates were applied.
- Plan for European servicing and parts availability before committing.
Import FAQ
Can I import a used Rivian R1T to Germany?
Yes. The R1T was never sold new in Europe, so importing a used US example is the only route, and it is registrable after individual approval.
Will I pay 0% customs duty on an R1T?
Often, but not guaranteed. The R1T is built in Illinois, so a US-origin VIN can support the 0% EU duty in force since July 2026. Only the VIN and plant data confirm it.
Does the 19% import VAT always apply?
Yes. German import VAT of 19% applies to every imported car regardless of origin and is separate from any customs duty.
Can a Rivian R1T charge in Europe?
Yes. The R1T uses CCS, which is compatible with European DC fast chargers, though Rivian's own charging network is North American.
How reliable is the Rivian R1T?
It is a young design with early software and hardware teething issues, many since resolved by updates. The bigger practical concern in Europe is servicing and parts support.
What is the gear tunnel?
A lockable storage space that runs across the truck behind the cab, unique to Rivian, useful for tools, gear or the sliding camp-kitchen accessory.
How is the battery checked?
Through a diagnostic that reports usable capacity and degradation, which is more reliable than the dashboard range figure.
How long does the import take?
Usually several weeks, set mainly by shipping and customs. We give a realistic timeline once a specific truck is selected.
