Rivian R1S

Importing a used Rivian R1S from the USA

The Rivian R1S is one of the few genuinely credible three-row electric SUVs, and because it is built exclusively in Normal, Illinois, it barely exists on European roads. For a German buyer that scarcity is the whole appeal: importing a used Rivian R1S from the USA is currently the only realistic way to put one on a German registration. As an independent broker, USCar Trader sources these cars from the American used market, checks the VIN and build origin, and manages the transport and paperwork. We do not sell new vehicles and we hold no Rivian franchise — we act purely as your intermediary.

Model history and generations

Rivian revealed the R1S alongside the R1T pickup in 2018, but customer deliveries only began in December 2022, so almost every used example on the market today is a 2023 or 2024 build. The first cars are retrospectively known as "Gen 1". In 2025 Rivian launched a heavily revised "Gen 2" R1S with a new zonal electrical architecture, far fewer control units, in-house Enduro and Ascent drive units, and updated driver-assistance hardware. When you shop the used market you are almost always looking at Gen 1, which matters for software support and parts, so confirming the exact model year from the VIN is essential.

Engines and drivetrain

The R1S is fully electric and always all-wheel drive. Gen 1 launched with a Quad-Motor setup rated around 835 hp and roughly 908 lb-ft, good for a 0-60 mph sprint near 3.0 seconds despite a curb weight above three tonnes. Rivian later added a cheaper Dual-Motor version and a Tri-Motor. Battery choice drives range: the Standard pack sits near 106 kWh usable, the Large pack around 135 kWh, and the Max pack roughly 180 kWh. EPA range spans from about 260 miles on smaller packs to over 400 miles on the Dual-Motor Max. Gen 1 uses a 400-volt system with DC peak charging around 200-220 kW.

Which trim makes sense

Body style is singular: a boxy, seven-seat SUV with a flat floor, front trunk and generous glass. Trims are Explore (dropped early) and the far more common Adventure, which adds the premium interior, upgraded audio and the full driver-assist suite. Options that swing value on a used car include the battery pack, wheel size (20", 21" or 22"), air suspension calibration and paint. All versions get height-adjustable air suspension with a wading depth around one metre.

Supply on the US market

Supply in the United States is steady and growing as early lease and first-owner cars cycle back. Typical used examples are 2023-2024 Adventure builds with 15,000-50,000 miles, often loaded with the Large or Max pack. Condition is generally strong because these are recent, high-value vehicles, but early Gen 1 cars can carry the software quirks of Rivian's launch period. Always base a purchase on a full Carfax or AutoCheck history and the current software version rather than photos alone.

Who benefits from importing

An imported R1S suits a buyer who wants a rugged, seven-seat electric SUV with real off-road ability and does not want to wait years for European availability. You should be comfortable with a sparse service footprint in Europe — Rivian has no dealer network here — and willing to rely on independent EV specialists for maintenance. If you value NACS/CCS charging flexibility and long-distance touring range in a family-sized package, the R1S is a compelling, if unconventional, import.

Known weak points and maintenance

Rivian R1S reliability has improved sharply, but the early Gen 1 cars have a documented history of teething issues. Owners report 12-volt battery failures, occasional door-seal and wind-noise complaints, software glitches around the central display and driver-assist, and phantom battery drain when the car sits. Air-suspension sensors and the frunk latch have generated the odd warranty claim. None of these are structural, and over-the-air updates have resolved many software faults, but for an imported car the practical challenge is service: parts and specialist repair for Rivian are scarce in Europe, so budget for longer lead times.

US and EU spec compared

US-market R1S vehicles use amber-free rear indicators in some configurations, miles-per-hour instrument scaling, and a charge port set up for Tesla Superchargers via NACS on newer cars. There is no rear fog lamp and no European e-Call fitment. The infotainment and navigation are tuned for North America. These are exactly the points a German inspector will look at, so plan for lighting and instrument adjustments during approval.

The import process in detail

The process runs in a set order: we help you select a suitable car, then verify the VIN and confirm the US plant of build. Payment is handled through escrow for security. The vehicle is booked onto ocean freight to a North European port, cleared through customs on arrival, then presented for a TÜV individual approval (Einzelabnahme). Once it passes, you register it with your local authority and receive German plates.

What customs clearance really costs

Key point: duty depends on the plant of build; only a VIN check secures the 0% rate. Import VAT of 19% applies regardless.

Two separate charges apply. The EU import duty on cars is normally 10%, but under Regulations (EU) 2026/1455 and 2026/1461 a 0% rate applies to vehicles of provable US origin that are shipped directly, in force from 1 July 2026 until 31 December 2029. The R1S is assembled in Illinois, so the VIN typically supports the 0% rate — but this is never guaranteed until the origin is confirmed. On top of that, the 19% German import VAT (Einfuhrumsatzsteuer) always applies and is calculated separately on the customs value plus duty. We charge no hidden margin.

TÜV, modifications and registration

Typical changes for the Einzelabnahme include adding a rear fog lamp, adjusting or converting the rear indicators, and confirming headlight compliance. The odometer must be readable and the speedometer calibrated in km/h. As a modern EV, the R1S has no emissions retrofit to worry about, which simplifies approval compared with combustion imports.

Check before you buy

  • Decode the VIN and confirm the Normal, Illinois build and model year.
  • Pull a full Carfax or AutoCheck history for accidents and title status.
  • Confirm a clean title (no salvage or rebuilt brand).
  • Check the current software version and battery pack type.
  • Inspect air suspension, tyres and 12V system.
  • Verify service and any open recall or campaign records.
  • Photograph the charge port type (CCS vs. NACS).

Common questions

Can I import a used Rivian R1S to Germany?

Yes. It is imported as a used vehicle from the US market and approved via TÜV individual acceptance.

Will the R1S qualify for 0% EU import duty?

It is built in Illinois, so the VIN usually supports 0% under the 2026 regulations, but we confirm origin before making any promise.

Does the 19% import VAT still apply?

Yes, the German Einfuhrumsatzsteuer of 19% always applies and is calculated separately.

Can it charge at European stations?

Yes, with the correct CCS adapter or on Gen 2 NACS hardware; we confirm the port type per car.

What about servicing in Europe?

Rivian has no dealer network here, so maintenance relies on independent EV specialists — plan accordingly.

How long does the import take?

Typically several weeks, driven mainly by ocean freight and the customs and approval steps.

Is the R1S a seven-seater?

Yes, it has three rows and seats seven.

Which model year should I look for?

2023-2024 Adventure builds are most common; Gen 2 (2025) brought a major electronics overhaul.
