Mercedes-Benz Metris Cargo Van

The Mercedes-Benz Metris Cargo Van is essentially the US name for the mid-size Vito, and that makes it one of the more curious import candidates: an American-market commercial van that is, under the skin, a European Mercedes.

Model profile

Model history and generations

Production years and key changes

Mercedes launched the Metris in the United States for the 2016 model year to slot beneath the big Sprinter, giving American tradespeople a van sized between compact and full-size. It is the third-generation Vito (internal code W447) rebadged for North America, sold as the Cargo Van and the glazed Passenger Van.

Powertrain and equipment

Engines, drivetrain and trims

What is under the hood

Unlike the front-drive American vans it competed with, the Metris is rear-wheel drive, giving it a more car-like towing character and better balance under load.

Trims and body styles

The Cargo Van is the panelled version aimed at trades and delivery use, with a low load floor, sliding side doors and rear barn or optional lift-gate doors.

Vehicle selection

North American market and suitability

What the US market offers

Metris vans served plumbers, electricians, caterers and delivery fleets, so many used examples have worked hard and carry commercial mileage.

Who this import is for

The Metris appeals to a buyer who wants a compact, well-built rear-drive work van with Mercedes engineering, in US petrol specification.

Pre-purchase review

Model-specific inspection points

Reliability: trouble spots to check

Metris reliability is broadly good, with the caveat that Mercedes maintenance is not cheap and the 2.0 turbo has a few known Metris common problems to check. The M274 engine can develop timing-chain and camshaft-adjuster wear if oil changes are stretched, and the balance-shaft and turbo hardware benefit from strict service intervals — proof of regular oil changes is worth paying for.

Germany and Europe

Differences, adaptation and registration

US vs. Europe differences

US-market headlights use the FMVSS/SAE beam pattern, which differs from the ECE pattern required in the EU, so they may need adjustment or replacement with ECE-compliant units for registration.

USCar Trader services

Inspection, purchase processing and escrow

As a buyer based in Germany, you do not have to inspect the vehicle yourself in the United States or Canada. Within the agreed scope, USCar Trader can coordinate document review, a separately commissioned on-site inspection and purchase processing.

  • Vehicle profile and history: The profile can show the VIN, US title status and available history records. No data source guarantees that every earlier event was reported.
  • Optional CARFAX report: Additional reported maintenance or service entries can be included. The report is not a complete service book or proof of every interval.
  • On-site inspection / USCT AutoCheck: USCar Trader can arrange a separately booked vehicle inspection. Agreed visible and accessible areas are documented. Road or functional tests require suitable access and seller approval; the visual review is not a lift inspection or workshop diagnosis.
  • Purchase processing and escrow: After approval, USCar Trader can coordinate seller contact, negotiation, contract and the escrow and import service. Fees, payment route and responsibilities are recorded in advance.
  • Recalls: Open safety recalls can be checked by VIN through the NHTSA recall search; they do not describe overall condition.

Covered inspection points are agreed in advance. An on-site inspection records condition at the appointment and is not a guarantee.

Next step: Before commissioning, USCar Trader and the customer agree which document, history, inspection and transaction checks suit the vehicle and are included in the service. This records what was actually checked.

Questions and answers

Common questions about importing this model

Is the Metris the same as the Mercedes Vito?

Yes. The Metris is the US-badged Vito (W447), so parts and servicing overlap heavily with the European van.

Does the Metris come with a diesel?

Not in the US. American Metris vans are petrol-only with the 2.0 turbo four, which avoids diesel emissions upkeep.

Does this vehicle automatically qualify for a 0% import-duty rate?

No, not automatically. A 0% EU import-duty rate may be available for a vehicle covered by Regulation (EU) 2026/1455 that has US origin and is imported directly into the EU. CETA may apply to a vehicle with preferential Canadian origin. Whether the requirements are met is assessed for the individual case. Please contact USCar Trader before purchase; we review the possible duty benefit and provide non-binding support. Import VAT and other costs are assessed separately.

How much can a Metris tow?

Up to around 5,000 lb, helped by its rear-wheel-drive layout.

Is the Metris reliable?

Broadly yes, but keep to strict oil-change intervals for the 2.0 turbo and check the 7G-Tronic for leaks; documented service matters.

Is servicing easy in Germany?

Yes, because it shares so much with the Vito, parts and know-how are widely available.

How long does shipping take?

Ocean freight is generally a few weeks, plus customs clearance and TÜV scheduling on arrival.

Do you sell the Metris directly?

No. USCar Trader is an independent broker and manages the import on your behalf without holding stock.
