Mercedes-Benz A-Class

Importing a used Mercedes-Benz A-Class from the USA

The American market never received the A-Class hatchback that Europeans know — instead the United States got the A-Class as a four-door sedan, sold from the 2019 model year as the A220 and the performance AMG A35. That difference is the whole point of importing one: a US-sourced A-Class is a compact three-box saloon, and buyers who specifically want the sedan silhouette, or a particular US specification, will find the American used market the natural place to look. Importing a used A-Class sedan from the USA is a sensible route when you want that body style and configuration.

USCar Trader operates as an independent broker on this route. We carry no stock, take no vehicle margin and have no manufacturer link; we locate the exact used A-Class you specify on the US market, check its history and origin, and manage the shipping and German clearance. The detail below covers what the car actually is and how the import works.

Model history: years and generations

The import-relevant car is the W177 generation, launched for Europe in 2018 and reaching the US as a 2019 sedan. In the US it was sold as the A220 (front- or all-wheel drive) and the AMG A35 4MATIC. A model-year update around 2022 refreshed the MBUX infotainment and minor equipment. Mercedes trimmed the A-Class from parts of the US line-up over time as buyers migrated to the closely related CLA and GLA, which makes the used market the practical source today. Earlier A-Class generations were not sold new in the US.

Engines, transmissions and drive

The A220 uses a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder (M260) producing around 188 hp, driving through a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic to the front wheels or, with 4MATIC, all four. The AMG A35 takes a higher-output 2.0-litre turbo four (roughly 302 hp), standard 4MATIC all-wheel drive and a sportier dual-clutch calibration, delivering genuine hot-hatch pace in sedan form. There is no manual gearbox in the US cars. For most buyers the A220 4MATIC is the sweet spot — brisk, efficient and surefooted.

Equipment lines and body styles

In the US the A-Class is a four-door sedan only; the European hatchback was not offered there. Equipment centres on the twin-screen MBUX dashboard, and US cars were typically well specified with option packages covering driver assistance, premium audio, panoramic roof and ambient lighting. The AMG A35 adds sport seats, AMG bodywork, an adaptive-damping option and the performance powertrain. When comparing listings, focus on A220 versus A35, 4MATIC or not, and the assistance packages.

The US used market

Supply is moderate rather than vast — the sedan sold in smaller numbers than Mercedes SUVs — but there is a steady flow of low-to-moderate-mileage 2019–2023 cars, many from lease returns in good condition. Colours and specification skew toward the well-equipped. Because these were often first cars for younger luxury buyers, service history quality varies, so documentation matters. We do not quote European prices here; the value in sourcing from the US is the sedan body and specification choice.

Is an import right for you?

Import a used A-Class sedan from the USA if you specifically want the compact three-box Mercedes saloon, or an AMG A35 in a US configuration, that the local market is not offering. It suits buyers who like a small, premium sedan with the full MBUX experience and modest running costs. If you would rather have the familiar European hatchback, that car is a domestic purchase — the US import case is precisely the sedan.

Common issues buyers should know

The W177 A-Class is generally solid, but a few items recur. The seven-speed dual-clutch transmission can feel hesitant at low speed and, on some cars, benefits from software updates and diligent servicing; listen for harshness in stop-start traffic. The M260 turbo engine is dependable but early cars had scattered reports of oil consumption and the occasional turbo or timing-related concern, so service records matter. MBUX software glitches, occasional 12-volt battery drain and minor electrical gremlins appear on some examples. Interior plastics in high-touch areas can mark. On the AMG A35, check for signs of hard use given its performance. Overall A-Class reliability is competitive for a compact premium car, provided maintenance has been kept up.

Differences from the European version

Beyond the obvious body-style difference, US cars carry US lighting and telematics: amber rear turn signals, headlamp aim for right-hand traffic, side marker lamps and usually no rear fog lamp. They lack the EU eCall system and run MPH-primary instruments (the digital cluster switches to km/h). Some MBUX services, navigation mapping and radio bands are US-configured and may need adjustment. These are handled during import and do not prevent registration.

Import step by step

The sequence is straightforward: (1) you specify the exact A-Class — A220 or A35, 4MATIC or not, year, colour, equipment; (2) we source candidates and run a VIN and origin check to establish the build plant and duty position; (3) purchase is settled through escrow so funds are protected until the car is secured; (4) the car is booked onto ocean freight to a North-European port; (5) we clear it through German customs; (6) it passes TÜV individual approval (Einzelabnahme) with the required modifications; (7) it is registered on German plates.

Customs and taxes: what applies

Bottom line: what matters is the factory shown by the VIN – proven US origin unlocks 0% duty. The 19% import VAT always applies.

Two separate charges apply. Import duty: the 0% EU rate under Regulations (EU) 2026/1455 and 2026/1461 (in force since 1 July 2026, direct transport, valid to 31 December 2029) applies only where US origin is proven by VIN and plant. The W177 A-Class sedan is built in Europe (principally Rastatt, Germany, with the sedan also produced in Aguascalientes, Mexico for North America), so it will generally not qualify for the US-origin rate — the duty then follows the vehicle's actual origin, which we confirm per VIN before you commit. The 19% German import VAT (Einfuhrumsatzsteuer) is always due, regardless of origin, on the customs value. We never describe an import as duty-free or guaranteed and we add no margin.

Modifications and single-vehicle approval

For the individual approval you will typically fit a rear fog lamp, set or replace headlights for right-hand traffic, bring rear indicators into EU compliance where required and confirm the speedometer reads km/h. A valid US title with manufacturer data or a certificate of conformity helps the inspector. After TÜV, registration at the local authority is routine.

What to verify before buying

  • Decode the VIN to confirm A220 or A35, drivetrain and build plant.
  • Pull a Carfax or AutoCheck history for accidents, title brands and mileage consistency.
  • Review service records, with attention to dual-clutch and any oil-consumption history.
  • Test or have inspected the DCT behaviour at low speed.
  • Confirm a clean, transferable title with no salvage or rebuilt brand.
  • Check MBUX and electrical functions, including battery health.
  • On an A35, look for evidence of track or hard use.

Common questions

Why is the US A-Class a sedan and not a hatchback?

Mercedes sold only the four-door sedan in the US market. That body style is exactly why buyers import one from the USA.

Can I import the AMG A35 from the USA?

Yes. The A35 4MATIC sedan was sold in the US and appears on the used market.

Will a used A-Class qualify for 0% import duty?

Only with proven US origin. The sedan is built in Germany or Mexico, so it generally will not; we confirm the duty position by VIN before purchase.

Does the 19% import VAT always apply?

Yes. The German Einfuhrumsatzsteuer of 19% is due on every import, separate from any duty.

Is the dual-clutch gearbox reliable?

Broadly yes, but it can feel hesitant at low speed; prefer cars with a documented service history and up-to-date software.

Does 4MATIC make sense for German conditions?

Many buyers value the all-wheel-drive traction, especially in winter; both front-drive and 4MATIC cars are available.

How long does the import take?

Typically a couple of months from purchase to German registration, driven mainly by freight and the TÜV appointment.

Do you add a margin to the car price?

No. USCar Trader is a broker; we charge a service fee and add no margin on the vehicle.
