Mercedes-Benz M-Class
Importing a used Mercedes-Benz M-Class from the USA
The Mercedes-Benz M-Class — badged ML throughout most of its life — is one of the most interesting mid-size luxury SUVs to source from the American used market, precisely because it was built there. Mercedes assembled the ML in Vance (Tuscaloosa), Alabama from 1997 onward, and the US fleet is deep, well-optioned and often specified with engines and packages that never reached German showrooms in the same numbers. As an independent broker, USCar Trader helps German and EU buyers find, verify and bring home a used ML without acting as a dealer or adding a hidden margin. This page walks through what actually exists in the US market, what to watch for, and how the import mechanics work.

Production years and key changes
Three core generations matter for import. The W163 (1997–2005) launched the badge and the Tuscaloosa plant, offering ML320, ML350 and the ML55 AMG. The W164 (2005–2011) was a full redesign with the 7G-Tronic automatic and a much stiffer body; US buyers knew it as ML350, ML500/ML550, ML320/ML350 CDI/BlueTEC and the ML63 AMG. The W166 (2011–2015) refined the formula further and, in 2015, was renamed GLE as part of Mercedes' naming reshuffle — so a late W166 and an early GLE are mechanically the same vehicle under two names. For most imports today, W164 and W166 are the sweet spot on age, parts availability and value.
What is under the hood
The US ML lineup leaned on the 3.5-litre V6 (M272, later M276) making roughly 268–302 hp depending on year, the 5.5-litre V8 in the ML550, and the 3.0-litre V6 turbodiesel (OM642) sold as ML320/ML350 BlueTEC — genuinely useful for European buyers who want torque and range. The ML63 AMG used the naturally aspirated 6.2-litre M156 (W164) and later the 5.5-litre biturbo M157 (W166). Almost every US ML pairs its engine with the 7G-Tronic seven-speed automatic and 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive, so a right-hand-of-the-road European life needs no drivetrain surprises.
Trims and body styles
The M-Class was always a five-seat, five-door SUV — no coupe or long-wheelbase versions here. US trims centred on ML350, ML350 4MATIC, ML550, the BlueTEC diesels and the ML63 AMG halo model. American cars frequently carry the Premium package, panoramic sunroof, Harman Kardon audio, air suspension (Airmatic) and the larger wheel options, which means a well-chosen import can be far better equipped than a comparable European base car.
What the US market offers
Supply is strong. The ML sold in large numbers across the Sun Belt and coasts, so clean, low-corrosion examples from dry states are realistic finds. Typical import candidates are W164 and W166 cars with moderate mileage and complete service history; diesels (BlueTEC) tend to have covered higher distances but hold up well when maintained. Southern and western cars are prized for minimal underbody rust, an advantage over salt-belt German equivalents. We assess condition from photos, history reports and, where useful, an independent inspection before anyone commits.
Who this import is for
An imported ML suits a buyer who wants a robust, comfortable luxury SUV with real off-road ability and a specific engine or spec that is scarce or expensive in Europe — a well-kept ML550 V8, a BlueTEC diesel, or an ML63 AMG. Because so many were US-built in Alabama, the M-Class is also one of the clearer candidates for the reduced-duty route when the VIN confirms US origin, which we cover in detail below.

Reliability: trouble spots to check
The ML is durable but has known weak spots worth checking. Early W164 M272 V6 engines (roughly 2005–2008) can suffer balance-shaft or idler-gear wear that throws a camshaft-timing fault code — confirm the specific engine number and service history. Airmatic air suspension components (compressor, struts) are a maintenance item on higher-mileage cars. The 7G-Tronic's conductor plate and 13-pin connector can leak and cause shift issues if neglected. On BlueTEC diesels, watch injectors, the AdBlue/emissions system and EGR carbon. Rear underbody and suspension mounting points should be inspected for corrosion on any car that spent time near salt. None of these are deal-breakers on a well-documented example, but they shape which specific car you buy.
US vs. Europe differences
US MLs run amber rear turn signals and lack a rear fog lamp, headlight aim differs, and the speedometer reads in mph. Emissions calibration and the diesel's exhaust hardware follow US EPA rules rather than Euro norms, which matters for individual approval. Infotainment is North-American mapped and radio bands differ. Equipment content, though, is frequently generous — panoramic roofs, premium audio and driver-assist packages are common on US cars.
How the import works
The process runs: model and specification selection; VIN and build-plant origin verification (does the car qualify for reduced duty?); secure payment via escrow; inland transport to a US port and ocean freight to a European port such as Bremerhaven; customs clearance on arrival; technical inspection and individual approval (TUEV / §21 Einzelabnahme) including any required modifications; then German or EU registration. We coordinate each stage and keep documentation aligned for customs.
Import duty, VAT and fees
In short: the 0% duty rate applies only with documented US origin (VIN/plant) – German import VAT of 19% is always due.
Two charges are separate and must not be blurred. First, the EU import duty: under Regulations (EU) 2026/1455 and 2026/1461, a 0% rate applies to vehicles of provable US origin imported directly, in force since 1 July 2026 and running to 31 December 2029. Origin is proven by the VIN and build plant — for the M-Class, US assembly in Tuscaloosa (VIN often beginning 4JG) frequently supports this, but it must be confirmed per car; no result is guaranteed in advance. Where origin is not US, the standard third-country car rate applies. Second, and always: 19% German import VAT (Einfuhrumsatzsteuer) is due on import regardless of origin. We quote both lines transparently and add no margin as a broker.
From modifications to registration
Typical changes for approval are a rear fog lamp installation, headlight adjustment or replacement for European aim, side-marker handling and confirming the odometer/units. The ML's drivetrain, brakes and structure pass individual approval readily when documentation is complete. After TUEV and Einzelabnahme, the car is registered on German plates.
Pre-buy inspection points
Verify the VIN against the title and confirm build plant for origin. Pull a full Carfax or AutoCheck history for accidents, title branding (salvage/rebuilt) and odometer consistency. Inspect underbody and rear mounts for rust. Confirm engine number and service records, especially on 2005–2008 V6 cars. Check Airmatic operation and for suspension warning messages. Confirm the title is clean and free of liens before any funds move.
What buyers ask most
Is the Mercedes M-Class built in the USA?
Yes — the ML was assembled in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The VIN confirms the plant, and US assembly can support the reduced-duty route, subject to per-car verification.
Which ML engine is best for import?
The ML350 V6 is the balanced all-rounder; the BlueTEC diesel suits high-mileage drivers; the ML550 and ML63 AMG appeal to buyers wanting V8 power that is costly in Europe.
What are the most common M-Class problems?
Early W164 V6 balance-shaft wear, Airmatic components, 7G-Tronic conductor-plate leaks and, on diesels, injector and emissions maintenance.
Do I pay import duty on a used ML?
If US origin is proven via VIN and plant, a 0% EU duty currently applies under the 2026 regulations. Otherwise the standard rate applies. It is never guaranteed until verified.
Is the 19% import VAT always due?
Yes. German Einfuhrumsatzsteuer of 19% applies to the import regardless of the car's origin.
Can a diesel ML be registered in Germany?
Yes, once it passes individual approval and any emissions and lighting requirements are met. Documentation of the emissions system is important.
How long does the import take?
Typically several weeks from purchase to registration, driven mostly by ocean freight scheduling and the TUEV/approval slot.
