Model profile

Model history and generations

From launch to today

The GLE grew out of the M-Class. The W164 ML (2005–2011) and W166 ML/GLE (2011–2019, renamed GLE in 2015) laid the groundwork, including the coupe-bodied C292 GLE Coupe. The current W167 GLE (2019 onward) brought the MBUX cabin, an optional third row, and E-Active Body Control air suspension.

Powertrain and equipment

Engines, drivetrain and trims

Engines and drivetrain in detail

The US-market GLE 350 uses the 2.0-litre turbo four (around 255 hp); the GLE 450 pairs the 3.0-litre M256 inline-six with EQ Boost 48-volt assistance (roughly 362 hp). Earlier W166 cars offered the GLE 400 twin-turbo V6 and a GLE 350d/BlueTEC diesel in the States.

Trim levels and variants

The GLE comes as a five-seat (optionally seven-seat on W167) SUV, with the swoopier GLE Coupe as a separate body.

Vehicle selection

North American market and suitability

Used availability in the USA

Off-lease three-to-five-year-old GLE 350 and GLE 450 4MATIC examples are the volume sellers, usually well equipped with moderate mileage.

Pre-purchase review

Model-specific inspection points

Reliability and common problems

The GLE is dependable but has known watch points. On air-suspension cars, check for leaking struts and a tired compressor — an SUV that squats on one corner after sitting is the tell. The M256 inline-six is strong; verify the 48-volt starter-generator behaves.

Germany and Europe

Differences, adaptation and registration

How US versions differ

US GLE models use mph-primary clusters, US headlight aiming and no rear fog lamp, plus amber-free rear signals in some years — the standard TÜV list.

From US purchase to registration

The assessment depends on the specific vehicle and the circumstances of the transaction. Please contact USCar Trader before purchase; we review any possible duty benefit and provide non-binding support. Import VAT and other costs are considered separately.

TÜV, approval and license plates

Expect to add a rear fog lamp, adapt the headlights to the European beam pattern, and confirm km/h speedometer display.

USCar Trader services

Inspection, purchase processing and escrow

As a buyer based in Germany, you do not have to inspect the vehicle yourself in the United States or Canada. Within the agreed scope, USCar Trader can coordinate document review, a separately commissioned on-site inspection and purchase processing.

  • Vehicle profile and history: The profile can show the VIN, US title status and available history records. No data source guarantees that every earlier event was reported.
  • Optional CARFAX report: Additional reported maintenance or service entries can be included. The report is not a complete service book or proof of every interval.
  • On-site inspection / USCT AutoCheck: USCar Trader can arrange a separately booked vehicle inspection. Agreed visible and accessible areas are documented. Road or functional tests require suitable access and seller approval; the visual review is not a lift inspection or workshop diagnosis.
  • Purchase processing and escrow: After approval, USCar Trader can coordinate seller contact, negotiation, contract and the escrow and import service. Fees, payment route and responsibilities are recorded in advance.
  • Recalls: Open safety recalls can be checked by VIN through the NHTSA recall search; they do not describe overall condition.

Covered inspection points are agreed in advance. An on-site inspection records condition at the appointment and is not a guarantee.

Next step: Before commissioning, USCar Trader and the customer agree which document, history, inspection and transaction checks suit the vehicle and are included in the service. This records what was actually checked.

Questions and answers

Common questions about importing this model

Does this vehicle automatically qualify for a 0% import-duty rate?

No, not automatically. A 0% EU import-duty rate may be available for a vehicle covered by Regulation (EU) 2026/1455 that has US origin and is imported directly into the EU. CETA may apply to a vehicle with preferential Canadian origin. Whether the requirements are met is assessed for the individual case. Please contact USCar Trader before purchase; we review the possible duty benefit and provide non-binding support. Import VAT and other costs are assessed separately.

Is the GLE the same as the old M-Class?

Yes in lineage; Mercedes renamed the ML to GLE in 2015, and the current W167 arrived in 2019.

Which GLE engine is most common on US cars?

The GLE 350 four-cylinder and the GLE 450 inline-six are the volume choices, most with 4MATIC.

Does the GLE offer a third row?

The current W167 offers an optional third row, making it a 5+2 in some configurations.

What should I check on a used GLE?

Air-suspension condition, 48-volt system function, engine oil leaks on older cars and a clean history report.

Can the AMG GLE 63 be registered in Germany?

Yes, after TÜV individual approval and the usual lighting and documentation changes.

How is import VAT treated when importing a Mercedes-Benz GLE?

Import VAT and other taxes or costs are assessed separately under the applicable rules and the circumstances of the individual case. A blanket answer for every vehicle would not be reliable.

How long does importing a GLE take?

Usually several weeks, mostly determined by ocean freight and customs clearance timing.
