Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class

Importing a used Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class from the USA

The GLE-Class is one of the more interesting Mercedes imports because a large share of US cars are built in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. That matters: a genuinely US-assembled GLE can, with a matching VIN, open the door to the 0% EU import duty — but only if the plant of build is provable, so the VIN must be checked, and nothing should be assumed. Whatever the origin turns out to be, a used GLE from the US market is fully importable, and the 19% German import VAT (Einfuhrumsatzsteuer) always applies on top of the customs value. The American used pool is broad and often better equipped than comparable German stock.

Production years and key changes

The GLE nameplate replaced the M-Class in 2015. The W166 GLE (2015–2019) was essentially a heavily updated ML with a new grille, revised interior and a nine-speed automatic. The current W167 arrived for 2020 as an all-new car: longer wheelbase, optional third row, an E-Active Body Control air-suspension option and the MBUX infotainment system. Buyers researching a used GLE will find both generations plentiful in the States, along with a strong supply of AMG variants.

What is under the hood

On the US market the W167 GLE350 uses a 2.0-litre turbo four (255 hp), the GLE450 pairs the 3.0-litre M256 inline-six with EQ Boost mild-hybrid assistance (362 hp), and the GLE580 runs a 4.0-litre biturbo V8 (483 hp) with 48-volt support. AMG models are the GLE53 (3.0-litre inline-six, ~429 hp) and the GLE63 S (4.0-litre biturbo V8, 603 hp). The earlier W166 offered the GLE350 3.5-litre V6, the GLE550 4.7-litre biturbo V8, a GLE350d BlueTEC 3.0-litre diesel and the AMG GLE63. Nearly all US cars use 4MATIC all-wheel drive with the 9G-Tronic automatic.

Trims and body styles

US GLEs are the five-seat (or optional seven-seat on W167) SUV; the separate GLE Coupe is its own model. Common equipment includes the Premium and Pinnacle packages, Burmester audio, panoramic roof, air suspension, 21-inch AMG wheels and driver-assistance bundles. AMG trims add the bodykit, sports exhaust and adaptive dampers.

What the US market offers

Supply is nationwide and deep, given the GLE's popularity as a family SUV. Typical import candidates run three-to-seven years old with 25,000–75,000 miles. Because many are leased and returned, well-kept, single-owner cars are common. Condition is generally strong outside the salt belt; northern cars should be checked for underbody corrosion. Highly optioned examples are easier to find in the US than in Germany.

Who this import is for

Importing a used GLE from the USA is attractive if you want a specific engine-and-equipment combination, an AMG GLE63 S at sensible mileage, or — with the right VIN — a US-origin car that may qualify for the 0% duty. It is less compelling for a base GLE350 where local supply is easy. As an independent broker, USCar Trader checks the origin and condition for you and never adds a hidden margin.

Reliability: trouble spots to check

The GLE is generally solid but has known weak points. The optional air suspension and the W167 E-Active Body Control system can develop leaks and pump faults that are costly to repair, so test ride height and self-levelling carefully. On the M256 inline-six, the 48-volt system and mild-hybrid starter-generator should be checked for fault codes. Direct-injection engines can build intake carbon over time; the 9-speed automatic benefits from regular fluid service. On older W166 diesels, watch for AdBlue/SCR faults and turbo actuator issues. As with any GLE reliability assessment, a complete service record is worth more than a low odometer.

US vs. Europe differences

US cars use amber side markers, mph speedometers and frequently omit a rear fog lamp. Headlight beam pattern and daytime running lights may need adjustment for ECE compliance. Radar cruise, MBUX, Burmester audio and driver-assistance features generally transfer without trouble. A km/h cluster display and correct odometer units are standard TÜV items.

How the import works

Select the car; verify the VIN and plant of build (this is where a Tuscaloosa-built GLE can matter); use escrow rather than a direct wire; book ocean freight; clear customs with the correct commodity code and origin evidence; present the car for TÜV and, where needed, individual approval; then register locally. USCar Trader manages each step as your intermediary.

Import duty, VAT and fees

Bottom line: what matters is the factory shown by the VIN – proven US origin unlocks 0% duty. The 19% import VAT always applies.

Keep the two charges apart. EU import duty: the 0% rate under Regulations (EU) 2026/1455 and 2026/1461 (in force since 1 July 2026, direct transport, valid until 31 Dec 2029) applies only with provable US origin. A US-built GLE can qualify if the VIN confirms Tuscaloosa assembly, but this is never guaranteed and must be documented — do not assume duty-free. Separately, the 19% German import VAT always applies to the customs value. We add no margin to duty or VAT.

From modifications to registration

Typical changes are activating or fitting a rear fog lamp, correcting the headlight pattern, switching the speedometer to km/h and confirming the odometer reads in kilometres. Documentation via COC or individual approval completes the process, after which you register the car and receive German plates.

Pre-buy inspection points

Read the full VIN and confirm the assembly plant for the origin question. Pull a Carfax or AutoCheck report for accidents, title brands and odometer history. Test the air suspension and ride-height functions. Check for corrosion on northern-state cars. Verify service records, especially for the mild-hybrid and V8 engines. Confirm a clean title, not salvage or rebuilt.

What buyers ask most

Can a used GLE from the USA get 0% EU duty?

Possibly. Many US GLEs are built in Alabama, so a matching VIN may qualify — but it must be proven, never assumed.

Do I always pay 19% import VAT?

Yes, German import VAT applies to every import regardless of origin.

Which GLE engines are common in the US?

The GLE350 four-cylinder, the GLE450 inline-six and the AMG V8 models are the mainstay.

Is the air suspension a risk on a used GLE?

It can be. Test ride height and levelling; repairs are expensive if it leaks.

What mileage should I expect?

Roughly 25,000–75,000 miles on three-to-seven-year-old cars.

Does the diesel come from the US?

Only older W166 GLE350d BlueTEC diesels were sold there; petrol dominates.

How is a US GLE registered in Germany?

Via TÜV/individual approval, minor lighting changes and a km/h cluster.

Can USCar Trader verify origin first?

Yes, we check the VIN and plant before purchase as your broker.
