Model profile

Model history and generations

Production years and key changes

The GLC Coupe arrived for the 2017 model year as the C253, the coupe derivative of the X253 GLC, itself the successor to the GLK. A mid-cycle facelift in 2020 updated the styling, the MBUX infotainment and the engine range. The second generation, the C254, launched for 2024 with a new platform, mild-hybrid across the range and the latest MBUX.

What is under the hood

In the US the volume seller is the GLC 300 Coupe, powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged four producing around 255 hp, driving through a nine-speed 9G-Tronic automatic, most often with 4MATIC all-wheel drive.

Trims and body styles

The GLC Coupe is a five-door SUV-coupe; there is no two-door or estate version. US trims centre on the GLC 300 Coupe with Premium and higher option packages, then the AMG GLC 43 and AMG GLC 63 performance models.

Vehicle selection

North American market and suitability

What the US market offers

The GLC family sells strongly in the United States, and the coupe has a steady following, so used examples are widely available, concentrated in affluent metro areas and the sunbelt.

Who this import is for

The GLC Coupe suits a buyer who wants the style of a coupe-SUV with Mercedes refinement and a specific US spec or AMG variant that is hard to find at home.

Pre-purchase review

Model-specific inspection points

Reliability: trouble spots to check

The GLC Coupe is broadly solid, but there are known items to check. The 2.0-litre turbo four is generally reliable yet can develop oil leaks and, on some engines, timing-related concerns if servicing is skipped, so a full Mercedes history matters. The 9G-Tronic transmission is smooth but benefits from fluid changes owners often neglect.

Germany and Europe

Differences, adaptation and registration

US vs. Europe differences

US-market headlights use the FMVSS/SAE beam pattern, which differs from the ECE pattern required in the EU, so they may need adjustment or replacement with ECE-compliant units for registration.

From modifications to registration

Typical approval work includes fitting or enabling a rear fog lamp, adapting or replacing the headlights for ECE compliance, confirming tyre and rim ratings, and recording the odometer in kilometres.

USCar Trader services

Inspection, purchase processing and escrow

As a buyer based in Germany, you do not have to inspect the vehicle yourself in the United States or Canada. Within the agreed scope, USCar Trader can coordinate document review, a separately commissioned on-site inspection and purchase processing.

  • Vehicle profile and history: The profile can show the VIN, US title status and available history records. No data source guarantees that every earlier event was reported.
  • Optional CARFAX report: Additional reported maintenance or service entries can be included. The report is not a complete service book or proof of every interval.
  • On-site inspection / USCT AutoCheck: USCar Trader can arrange a separately booked vehicle inspection. Agreed visible and accessible areas are documented. Road or functional tests require suitable access and seller approval; the visual review is not a lift inspection or workshop diagnosis.
  • Purchase processing and escrow: After approval, USCar Trader can coordinate seller contact, negotiation, contract and the escrow and import service. Fees, payment route and responsibilities are recorded in advance.
  • Recalls: Open safety recalls can be checked by VIN through the NHTSA recall search; they do not describe overall condition.

Covered inspection points are agreed in advance. An on-site inspection records condition at the appointment and is not a guarantee.

Next step: Before commissioning, USCar Trader and the customer agree which document, history, inspection and transaction checks suit the vehicle and are included in the service. This records what was actually checked.

Questions and answers

Common questions about importing this model

Does this vehicle automatically qualify for a 0% import-duty rate?

No, not automatically. A 0% EU import-duty rate may be available for a vehicle covered by Regulation (EU) 2026/1455 that has US origin and is imported directly into the EU. CETA may apply to a vehicle with preferential Canadian origin. Whether the requirements are met is assessed for the individual case. Please contact USCar Trader before purchase; we review the possible duty benefit and provide non-binding support. Import VAT and other costs are assessed separately.

How is import VAT treated when importing a Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe?

Import VAT and other taxes or costs are assessed separately under the applicable rules and the circumstances of the individual case. A blanket answer for every vehicle would not be reliable.

Why import a car that is also built in Europe?

To obtain a specific US specification, colour or AMG variant, or a particular price and condition available in the deep American used market that is scarce at home.

Which GLC Coupe engine is best to import?

The GLC 300's 2.0 turbo four is the sensible all-rounder; the AMG 43 and 63 offer far more performance but higher running costs. All use 4MATIC all-wheel drive.

Is the 9G-Tronic transmission reliable?

It is generally smooth and durable, but confirm the fluid has been serviced, as this is often overlooked and matters for longevity.

Will a US GLC Coupe pass TÜV?

Yes, after lighting is brought to ECE standard and documentation is assembled; because the model is sold in Europe, compliance data is readily available.

How is the car shipped?

Usually via container or RoRo from a US port, with inland transport arranged to the loading port first.

Is USCar Trader a Mercedes-Benz dealer?

No. USCar Trader is an independent broker for used US vehicles, with no manufacturer partnership and no margin on the car.
