Model profile
The first generation, chassis code C117, launched in the US for 2014 and ran through 2019. It put a swooping coupe roofline on the front-wheel-drive MFA platform shared with the A-Class, B-Class and GLA, and it was the car that made the CLA name. The second generation, C118, arrived for 2020 and was facelifted in 2023.
Powertrain and equipment
US CLA250 cars use a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder: roughly 208 hp in the C117, and about 221 hp in the C118. Power runs through a seven-speed dual-clutch (7G-DCT) on the first generation and an eight-speed dual-clutch on the second, with front-wheel drive standard and 4MATIC all-wheel drive optional.
Typical US trims run from the CLA250 through the AMG CLA35 (added on the C118) to the CLA45/CLA45 S. Equipment to look for includes the Premium and Multimedia packages, panoramic roof, Burmester audio, ambient lighting, AMG Line styling and the driver-assistance suite.

Pre-purchase review
CLA reliability is generally solid, but a few items recur. The seven-speed dual-clutch on C117 cars can develop jerky low-speed behaviour or, less often, mechatronic and clutch wear; a smooth-shifting car with service records is what you want. Early M270 2.0 engines had timing-chain and tensioner concerns on high-mileage examples, so listen for rattle on cold start.
