Mercedes-Benz CLA

Importing a used Mercedes-Benz CLA from the USA

The Mercedes-Benz CLA is the brand's compact four-door coupe, and the American used market holds a large, well-optioned pool of them, often in CLA250 and AMG forms that appeal to European buyers. USCar Trader acts strictly as an independent broker for used vehicles: no dealer stock, no margin baked into the car, no manufacturer partnership. We source, verify and ship the CLA you choose from the USA to Germany or the EU. Below is a straight account of the model, its weak spots, and the import route.

From launch to today

The first generation, chassis code C117, launched in the US for 2014 and ran through 2019. It put a swooping coupe roofline on the front-wheel-drive MFA platform shared with the A-Class, B-Class and GLA, and it was the car that made the CLA name. The second generation, C118, arrived for 2020 and was facelifted in 2023. It grew slightly, gained the MBUX infotainment system with the twin-screen dashboard, sharper styling and better cabin materials. Both generations were sold as the CLA sedan (Mercedes markets it as a four-door coupe) and, in the first generation, briefly as the CLA Shooting Brake estate in some markets, though the US mainly received the sedan.

Engines and drivetrain in detail

US CLA250 cars use a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder: roughly 208 hp in the C117, and about 221 hp in the C118. Power runs through a seven-speed dual-clutch (7G-DCT) on the first generation and an eight-speed dual-clutch on the second, with front-wheel drive standard and 4MATIC all-wheel drive optional. The performance versions are the real draw: the Mercedes-AMG CLA45 pushes its 2.0-litre turbo to around 355-382 hp depending on year and CLA45/CLA45 S spec, with standard 4MATIC and launch control. These are among the most powerful production four-cylinders you can buy, and they are genuinely quick.

Trim levels and variants

Typical US trims run from the CLA250 through the AMG CLA35 (added on the C118) to the CLA45/CLA45 S. Equipment to look for includes the Premium and Multimedia packages, panoramic roof, Burmester audio, ambient lighting, AMG Line styling and the driver-assistance suite. All are compact four-door coupes; the low roof and frameless doors define the look and the slightly snug rear seat.

Used availability in the USA

CLAs sold strongly in the States as an entry point to the three-pointed star, so availability is excellent and cars are often loaded with options that were pricey when new. You will find many CLA250 4MATIC examples with moderate mileage, plus a steady supply of AMG cars for buyers who want the hot version. Coastal and southern cars tend to be rust-free; check any that spent winters in the north-east. Because these were aspirational leases, a lot of examples are clean, one- or two-owner cars with full dealer history.

When importing makes sense

Import a used CLA if you want a compact, badge-strong Mercedes with sharp looks and, in AMG form, serious pace. The CLA250 4MATIC makes a comfortable all-weather daily; the CLA45 is a pocket rocket. It suits buyers who value style and brand over rear-seat space. If you need a roomy family car, look at a larger Mercedes instead.

Reliability and common problems

CLA reliability is generally solid, but a few items recur. The seven-speed dual-clutch on C117 cars can develop jerky low-speed behaviour or, less often, mechatronic and clutch wear; a smooth-shifting car with service records is what you want. Early M270 2.0 engines had timing-chain and tensioner concerns on high-mileage examples, so listen for rattle on cold start. Oil weeping from the turbo and valve-cover area, worn front control-arm bushings, and the usual electronic gremlins in infotainment and sensors round out the list. On AMG cars, budget for tyres, brakes and clutch given how hard some were driven. A well-kept, documented CLA is a dependable car; a cheap, thrashed one is not.

How US versions differ

US CLAs carry mph clusters, US lighting without a standard rear fog lamp, and North American infotainment bands and connected services. European ECE lighting compliance and a rear fog lamp are the main conversion points, handled during approval. Feature content is broadly the same as European cars because these share a platform globally.

From US purchase to registration

Selection: we shortlist the trim, drivetrain and options you want. VIN and origin check: we decode the VIN to confirm the assembly plant, which sets the customs rate. Escrow: your funds are protected until the car is verified. Ocean freight: the CLA ships by container or RoRo to a German port. Customs clearance: duty and VAT are declared on arrival. TUEV and individual approval: the car is inspected and documented. Registration: you receive German plates once the paperwork is complete.

Costs, duty and taxes at a glance

Key point: duty depends on the plant of build; only a VIN check secures the 0% rate. Import VAT of 19% applies regardless.

Two charges are separate. Import duty: the 0% rate under Regulations (EU) 2026/1455 and 2026/1461 (in force from 1 July 2026 to 31 December 2029, direct transport) applies only to vehicles of provable US origin. The CLA is built in Kecskemét, Hungary, with some Mexican production, so a US-market CLA is typically not of US origin, and the standard duty rate normally applies rather than 0%. We confirm the plant from the VIN in every case and never promise duty-free status. Import VAT: the 19% German Einfuhrumsatzsteuer is due on every import, without exception. All charges are official pass-throughs with no added margin.

TÜV, approval and license plates

Expect a rear fog lamp to be added, lighting adapted to ECE standards, and the odometer read and documented in kilometres. The individual approval (Einzelabnahme per §21 StVZO) records the specification, after which the CLA can be registered.

Pre-purchase checklist

Match the VIN to the title and build data. Order a Carfax or AutoCheck report for accident, title and odometer history. Confirm a clean, non-salvage title. On C117 cars, verify smooth dual-clutch operation and check for timing-chain rattle. Inspect for oil leaks around the turbo and valve cover. On AMG cars, check tyres, brakes and clutch wear. Look for panoramic roof and sunroof drain issues.

Import FAQ

Does a US-market CLA qualify for 0% import duty?

Usually not, because it is built in Hungary or Mexico rather than the USA. We check the plant from the VIN; the standard rate normally applies, and the 19% import VAT always does.

Is the CLA250 or the CLA45 the better import?

The CLA250 4MATIC is the balanced daily driver; the AMG CLA45 is for buyers who want standout performance.

How reliable is the dual-clutch gearbox?

Generally good, but early seven-speed units can shift roughly. Test for smoothness and insist on service records.

Are parts available in Germany?

Yes. The CLA is sold in Europe, so Mercedes parts and service are readily available.

Is the rear seat usable?

It is a four-door coupe, so rear headroom is tight for tall adults. Treat it as a stylish 2+2-plus car.

How long does importing take?

Usually a few weeks from purchase to registration, depending on shipping and the approval appointment.
