Lexus TX
Importing a used Lexus TX from the USA
The Lexus TX is a three-row, midsize luxury SUV that Lexus launched for the 2024 model year — and one that was never officially sold in Europe. That single fact drives most of the interest we see: if you want a TX in Germany, importing a used example from the USA is essentially the only route. Because the TX is built in Indiana, it is also one of the stronger candidates for favourable origin treatment. USCar Trader acts purely as an independent broker: you select the car and we manage the VIN origin check, freight and clearance.

From launch to today
The TX is new, introduced in mid-2023 as a 2024 model to replace the stretched RX L in the Lexus line-up. It sits on Toyota's TNGA-K platform and shares its underpinnings and much of its hardware with the Toyota Grand Highlander, built alongside it at Toyota's Princeton, Indiana plant. As a first-generation model, there are no older versions to compare — the importable pool is simply the 2024-onward cars, which today means low-mileage, near-new used examples coming off early leases and trade-ins.
Engines and drivetrain in detail
The TX offers three powertrains. The TX 350 uses a 2.4-litre turbocharged four (the T24A-FTS) making around 275 hp, driving through an eight-speed automatic, with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. The TX 500h is a performance hybrid: the same 2.4 turbo combined with electric motors for a combined output near 366 hp, standard all-wheel drive, and a six-speed automatic. At the top, the TX 550h+ is a plug-in hybrid pairing a 3.5-litre V6 with a larger battery for roughly 404 hp combined and an electric-only range in the region of 33 miles, again with all-wheel drive. This spread lets you pick between efficiency, performance and plug-in flexibility.
Trim levels and variants
The TX is a single three-row SUV body offered in Premium, Luxury and F Sport-flavoured configurations depending on powertrain. Expect a large 14-inch touchscreen, a panoramic roof, three rows seating six or seven, and the option of captain's chairs in the second row. Higher trims add semi-aniline leather, a Mark Levinson audio system, and the fuller Lexus Safety System+ suite. The 500h introduces F Sport styling and handling touches.
Used availability in the USA
Because the TX is recent, the used market is made up of clean, low-mileage cars — typically well under 40,000 miles — often still carrying much of their original equipment appeal. Supply grows steadily as lease returns enter the market. As a luxury three-row, many were bought loaded, so US cars frequently carry the high-end options. We help you read the build sheet and Monroney window sticker so the specification is clear before purchase.
When importing makes sense
A used Lexus TX import makes sense if you specifically want a three-row Lexus that Germany never received, prefer the plug-in 550h+ for its electric commuting range, or value the Toyota/Lexus reputation for durability in a large family SUV. Because it is US-built, it is also among the more customs-efficient Lexus models to bring over.

Reliability and common problems
The TX is too new for a long field record, so any honest assessment leans on its architecture. It shares the TNGA-K platform and much of its hardware with the Toyota Grand Highlander and the wider Toyota hybrid family, which has an excellent reliability reputation and a mature, well-proven hybrid system. The main variable is the 2.4-litre turbo engine, which is newer than Toyota's long-serving naturally aspirated units, so documented service and any open recall or software campaign history matter. For the 550h+ plug-in, confirm the high-voltage battery health and charging behaviour. As with any early-production model, buying a car with a complete service record and checking for outstanding technical campaigns is the sensible approach.
How US versions differ
Because the TX was never sold in Europe, there is no local equivalent to compare against — importing is the point. US cars have amber side markers, an mph speedometer, US headlights and typically no rear fog lamp. The infotainment, wireless smartphone integration and driver assistance all function here; only the telematics/eCall configuration differs. A US charging inlet on the 550h+ (SAE J1772 for AC) may need an adapter or cable suited to European Type 2 charging, which is a routine consideration for imported plug-in hybrids.
From US purchase to registration
The sequence is: select the TX and review its window sticker and history report; verify the VIN and confirm the Indiana plant to establish US origin; place funds in escrow instead of paying the seller directly; arrange inland US transport and ocean freight to a North European port; clear EU customs on arrival; present the car for TÜV inspection and individual approval (§21 StVZO); then register it locally. We coordinate the handovers so a large, valuable SUV moves securely from the US to your registration.
Costs, duty and taxes at a glance
Bottom line: what matters is the factory shown by the VIN – proven US origin unlocks 0% duty. The 19% import VAT always applies.
Two separate charges apply. The first is EU import duty. Because the TX is built in Princeton, Indiana, a car with provable US origin (VIN and plant), shipped directly to the EU, can qualify for the 0% preferential rate under Regulations (EU) 2026/1455 and 2026/1461, valid from 1 July 2026 to 31 December 2029. This is favourable but never automatic — origin must be documented, and we do not guarantee it in advance. The second charge always applies: the 19% German import VAT (Einfuhrumsatzsteuer), calculated on the customs value plus any duty and freight. We add no margin; you pay the seller, the freight and the state charges directly.
TÜV, approval and license plates
Adaptation for a US TX typically means fitting or activating a rear fog lamp, coding the instrument cluster to km/h, adjusting the headlights to the European beam pattern, and addressing side-marker function. The odometer must read in kilometres on the registration document. For the 550h+, a Type 2-compatible charging solution should be arranged. Given the model's age, obtaining conformity documentation may require the individual-approval route.
Pre-purchase checklist
Before buying a used Lexus TX, confirm: (1) the VIN matches title and window sticker and shows the Indiana plant for origin; (2) a clean Carfax or AutoCheck with no accident, salvage or flood record; (3) complete service history and any recall or software campaigns closed out; (4) on the 550h+, verified high-voltage battery health and charging function; (5) clear title (not salvage or lemon); (6) no accident repair on a car this new; (7) all three rows, powered features and the large touchscreen functioning correctly.
Import FAQ
Was the Lexus TX ever sold in Europe?
No. The TX was not offered through official European channels, so importing a used example from the USA is effectively the only way to own one in Germany.
Can the TX qualify for 0% import duty?
It is a strong candidate because it is built in Princeton, Indiana. A car with provable US origin by VIN and plant, shipped directly within the 2026–2029 window, can qualify for the 0% rate. It is never guaranteed in advance, and the 19% import VAT always applies.
Which TX powertrain is best to import?
The TX 350 is the value choice, the 500h adds hybrid performance, and the 550h+ plug-in offers electric-only commuting. Your priorities on efficiency versus performance decide it.
Is the TX reliable?
It is new, but built on Toyota's proven TNGA-K platform and mature hybrid technology. Buy one with full service records and any campaigns completed.
Will the plug-in charge in Germany?
Yes, with the right cable or adapter. The US AC inlet is J1772, so a Type 2-compatible solution is arranged as part of the import.
Do US cars have a rear fog lamp?
Usually not; fitting or activating one is a standard TÜV adaptation item.
How long does shipping take?
Ocean freight typically runs three to six weeks, plus US inland transport, customs clearance and approval.
Can I service a TX in Germany?
Yes. It shares much of its mechanical package with Toyota models, and independent and specialist workshops can maintain it.
