Lexus ES BEV
Importing a used Lexus ES BEV from the USA
The Lexus ES BEV is the fully electric member of Lexus's long-running executive sedan family, and it represents a real break from tradition for a nameplate that spent three decades built around smooth petrol and self-charging hybrid drivetrains. If you want to import a used Lexus ES BEV from the USA, the most important thing to grasp up front is that this is a very young model. The eighth-generation ES was shown in 2025 and the battery-electric versions sit at the top of that range, so genuine used cars are only beginning to reach the American market. Supply is thin, and almost everything you will find is a near-new, low-mileage lease return or ex-demonstrator rather than a high-mileage private sale.

USCar Trader acts as an independent broker for used US vehicles. We do not sell new cars, we hold no manufacturer franchise, and we do not add a hidden margin to the vehicle price. Our role is to find the right used Lexus ES BEV in the States, verify it, and handle the logistics and paperwork so the car arrives in Germany ready for approval and registration.
From launch to today
The ES badge goes back to 1989, when Lexus launched a comfort-focused, front-wheel-drive sedan to sit below the flagship LS. For most of its life the ES shared its platform with the Toyota Camry and Avalon, and it built a loyal following on quietness, ride comfort and long-term durability rather than sporting pretensions. The seventh generation (roughly 2019 to 2025) moved to the GA-K platform, introduced the ES 300h hybrid as the volume drivetrain in many markets, and added the F Sport appearance and handling packages. The eighth generation arrived in 2025 on a larger body and, for the first time, offered battery-electric ES BEV variants alongside the continuing hybrids. Because the ES BEV is so new, used-market depth is limited and long-term ownership data is still being written.
Engines and drivetrain in detail
The ES BEV drops the combustion engine entirely. Lexus has confirmed both a single-motor, front-wheel-drive configuration and a dual-motor all-wheel-drive version, each fed by a floor-mounted lithium-ion battery and driving through a single-speed reduction gear. Expect the usual electric-car characteristics: strong low-speed torque, near-silent cruising, selectable regenerative braking and the smooth, linear delivery the ES has always been known for. Exact output and battery-capacity figures for individual US-market trims should be confirmed against the window sticker or Monroney label of the specific car, since the range was still settling as early cars shipped.
Trim levels and variants
The ES BEV is offered only as a four-door sedan; there is no wagon or coupe. Trim structure follows the wider ES family, typically a well-equipped base level, a comfort-oriented luxury grade and an F Sport Design package that adds a sportier look, unique wheels and interior trim without changing the fundamental character of the car. US cars are generally generously equipped, with heated and ventilated seats, a large central touchscreen and driver-assistance systems commonly fitted as standard.
Used availability in the USA
Because the ES BEV launched so recently, the American used pool is small and skewed toward late-model, low-mileage cars. Many are one-owner lease returns or fleet demonstrators, which usually means full service history, clean interiors and up-to-date software. That works in a careful importer's favour: condition tends to be excellent, but you should expect fewer cars to choose from than with an established model, and it pays to move quickly on a good example rather than wait for a wide selection to build up.
When importing makes sense
The ES BEV suits a buyer who wants a quiet, comfortable electric executive sedan with the low running costs of an EV and the long-term dependability reputation that follows the Lexus badge. It appeals to drivers who value refinement over outright sportiness, who cover meaningful annual mileage on motorways, and who like the idea of US-specification equipment. If you want a proven, high-volume used car with a deep supply pool, a more established Lexus may make more sense today; if you want a fresh, low-mileage electric ES and are comfortable importing a young model, it is a genuinely interesting proposition.

Reliability and common problems
As a brand-new electric model, the ES BEV has little accumulated field data, so anyone researching Lexus ES BEV reliability should treat early reports with caution. The ES nameplate carries a strong durability reputation, and Lexus EV components are shared with other models in the group, which is reassuring. The usual electric-car watch points still apply: keep an eye on the 12-volt auxiliary battery, confirm the car is running current software, and check tyre wear, since heavy, torque-rich EVs can go through front tyres. Verify that DC fast charging works as expected during any inspection, and confirm the state of health of the traction battery where the car's diagnostics allow it.
How US versions differ
US ES BEVs differ from European cars in several ways that matter for import. American EVs increasingly use the NACS charging port, whereas Europe standardises on CCS2, so an adapter or port arrangement needs checking. Lighting follows US rules, meaning amber side markers, US-pattern headlights and no separate rear fog lamp. Instrumentation reads in miles, and the navigation and connected services are configured for the US. None of this is a barrier, but each point becomes a task during the German approval process.
From US purchase to registration
The process runs in a clear sequence: selection of a suitable car; a VIN and origin check to establish the assembly plant; a secure escrow payment so funds are only released against a verified vehicle; ocean freight in a container or roll-on/roll-off vessel; customs clearance on arrival in the EU; a TÜV technical inspection and, where needed, an individual approval (Einzelabnahme); and finally German registration. USCar Trader coordinates each stage and keeps you informed as the car moves.
Costs, duty and taxes at a glance
In short: the 0% duty rate applies only with documented US origin (VIN/plant) – German import VAT of 19% is always due.
This ES BEV is listed with a neutral origin, which means the import duty rate depends on where the specific car was actually built. If the VIN and plant data prove genuine US assembly, the vehicle can qualify for the 0% EU import duty introduced under Regulations (EU) 2026/1455 and 2026/1461, in force since 1 July 2026 for directly transported US-origin vehicles. If the car was built outside the US, the standard passenger-car customs rate applies instead. The 19% German import VAT (Einfuhrumsatzsteuer) is always due on top and is calculated separately from any duty. We never describe an import as duty-free or guaranteed; the rate follows the documented origin.
TÜV, approval and license plates
Typical work for German approval includes fitting or activating a rear fog lamp, adjusting or replacing headlights for right-hand traffic, addressing side-marker lighting, and confirming the speedometer can display in km/h. As a full electric car, the ES BEV also needs its type documentation or a Certificate of Conformity checked; where that is not available, an individual approval covers the technical assessment before the car can be registered.
Pre-purchase checklist
Before committing, confirm the following: the VIN and build plant (for the customs question); a full Carfax or AutoCheck history with no accident or flood record; the title status is clean rather than salvage or rebuilt; battery state of health and charging function; complete service and software history; and evidence of even, healthy tyre wear. On a young EV, software currency and battery health matter more than mileage.
Import FAQ
Can I import a used Lexus ES BEV from the USA to Germany?
Yes. As a used vehicle it can be imported, cleared through customs, approved by TÜV and registered in Germany. USCar Trader handles the sourcing and logistics as an independent broker.
Will the ES BEV qualify for 0% EU import duty?
Only if the VIN and plant data prove genuine US assembly and the car is transported directly, under the 2026 EU regulations. If it was built elsewhere, the standard car duty rate applies. We never promise duty-free status.
Does the 19% import VAT still apply?
Yes. The 19% German Einfuhrumsatzsteuer is always due on import and is calculated separately from any customs duty, regardless of the car's origin.
Can I charge a US ES BEV in Europe?
US EVs increasingly use the NACS port while Europe uses CCS2, so the charging arrangement and any adapter need to be confirmed for the specific car before import.
Is the Lexus ES BEV reliable?
It is too new for long-term data, but it shares components with other Lexus EVs and carries the ES nameplate's durability reputation. Check battery health, 12V battery and software status on inspection.
How long does the import take?
From purchase to German registration typically takes a couple of months, driven mainly by ocean freight scheduling, customs clearance and the approval appointment.
What condition are used US ES BEVs in?
Because the model is new, most are low-mileage lease returns or demonstrators in excellent condition, though the choice of cars is currently limited.
