USCar Trader import service

Import this model from the USA or Canada

Choose a specific vehicle. Where data is available, its detail page shows the import cost calculation. We assess any possible duty benefit with you before purchase.

Important: A 0% EU import-duty rate may be available for a vehicle covered by Regulation (EU) 2026/1455 that has US origin and is imported directly into the EU. CETA may apply to a vehicle with preferential Canadian origin. Whether the requirements are met is assessed for the individual case. Please contact us before purchase; we review the possible duty benefit and provide non-binding support through the process. Import VAT and other costs are assessed separately.

Kia Niro

The Kia Niro is a compact, efficiency-focused crossover offered in three electrified flavours — hybrid, plug-in hybrid and full battery-electric — which makes it an unusually versatile import candidate.

Model profile

Model history and generations

From launch to today

The first-generation Niro (chassis code DE) launched for 2017 and ran through 2022. It was sold from the start as a dedicated eco crossover on Kia's shared hybrid platform, offered as a conventional hybrid (HEV), a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) added shortly after, and a battery-electric version marketed as the Niro EV (badged e-Niro in some markets).

Powertrain and equipment

Engines, drivetrain and trims

Engines and drivetrain in detail

The hybrid and plug-in hybrid pair a 1.6-litre GDI Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder with an electric motor, driving the front wheels through a six-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT) rather than the CVT most rivals use — a setup that gives the Niro a more conventional, connected feel.

Trim levels and variants

The Niro is a five-door crossover hatchback only. US trims broadly followed an LX / EX / EX Premium / Touring structure on the first generation, with the second generation moving to LX / EX / SX / SX Touring-style grades.

Vehicle selection

North American market and suitability

Used availability in the USA

Supply is steady rather than enormous, and it skews toward the hybrid, which was the volume seller.

When importing makes sense

The Niro suits a buyer who wants low running costs, everyday practicality and the ability to choose exactly how electrified they go.

Pre-purchase review

Model-specific inspection points

Reliability and common problems

Kia Niro reliability is one of the model's strong points, helped by the mechanically simple hybrid layout, but there are Kia Niro common problems worth checking. If expressly commissioned, feasible at the vehicle location and approved by the seller, USCar Trader can arrange a driving assessment to document observable shift quality, shudder, hesitation or driveline noise; service and repair records are reviewed separately.

Germany and Europe

Differences, adaptation and registration

How US versions differ

US Niros use red rear turn signals (or amber, year-dependent) rather than the separate amber indicators required in Germany and lack a rear fog lamp.

From US purchase to registration

For the EV, plan the charging-interface question early. USCar Trader coordinates each stage as your broker.

TÜV, approval and license plates

Typical approval work includes fitting a rear fog lamp, converting the rear turn signals to amber, adjusting or replacing the headlights for the European beam, and verifying the speedometer in km/h.

USCar Trader services

Inspection, purchase processing and escrow

As a buyer based in Germany, you do not have to inspect the vehicle yourself in the United States or Canada. Within the agreed scope, USCar Trader can coordinate document review, a separately commissioned on-site inspection and purchase processing.

  • Vehicle profile and history: The profile can show the VIN, US title status and available history records. No data source guarantees that every earlier event was reported.
  • Optional CARFAX report: Additional reported maintenance or service entries can be included. The report is not a complete service book or proof of every interval.
  • On-site inspection / USCT AutoCheck: USCar Trader can arrange a separately booked vehicle inspection. Agreed visible and accessible areas are documented. Road or functional tests require suitable access and seller approval; the visual review is not a lift inspection or workshop diagnosis.
  • Purchase processing and escrow: After approval, USCar Trader can coordinate seller contact, negotiation, contract and the escrow and import service. Fees, payment route and responsibilities are recorded in advance.
  • Recalls: Open safety recalls can be checked by VIN through the NHTSA recall search; they do not describe overall condition.

Covered inspection points are agreed in advance. An on-site inspection records condition at the appointment and is not a guarantee.

Next step: Before commissioning, USCar Trader and the customer agree which document, history, inspection and transaction checks suit the vehicle and are included in the service. This records what was actually checked.

Questions and answers

Common questions about importing this model

Can I import and register a Kia Niro in Germany?

Yes. All three variants — hybrid, plug-in hybrid and EV — can be imported and registered after individual approval and the standard modifications.

Does this vehicle automatically qualify for a 0% import-duty rate?

No, not automatically. A 0% EU import-duty rate may be available for a vehicle covered by Regulation (EU) 2026/1455 that has US origin and is imported directly into the EU. CETA may apply to a vehicle with preferential Canadian origin. Whether the requirements are met is assessed for the individual case. Please contact USCar Trader before purchase; we review the possible duty benefit and provide non-binding support. Import VAT and other costs are assessed separately.

How is import VAT treated when importing a Kia Niro?

Import VAT and other taxes or costs are assessed separately under the applicable rules and the circumstances of the individual case. A blanket answer for every vehicle would not be reliable.

Can I charge an imported Niro EV in Europe?

US EVs use J1772/CCS1 connectors, which differ from European CCS2. Adapters or a charging-interface solution are needed; plan this before import.

Is the dual-clutch transmission reliable?

If expressly commissioned, feasible at the vehicle location and approved by the seller, USCar Trader can arrange a driving assessment to document observable shift quality, shudder, hesitation or driveline noise; service and repair records are reviewed separately.

Which variant is easiest to find in the USA?

The conventional hybrid is the most common. PHEV and EV versions are available but rarer and may take longer to source.

How long does the import take?

Plan for roughly two to three months from purchase to German plates, driven mainly by shipping and the TÜV appointment.

What should I check on a used Niro EV?

The high-voltage battery's state of health, DC and AC charging function, and a clean service and accident history.
