Jeep Grand Cherokee L
Importing a used Jeep Grand Cherokee L from the USA
The Grand Cherokee L is the three-row version of Jeep's flagship SUV, built to close the gap between the standard two-row Grand Cherokee and full-size body-on-frame Wagoneers. It launched a full model year ahead of the redesigned two-row car and quickly became a mainstay of the American mid-size SUV market. For German and EU buyers, the appeal is a genuinely American three-row 4x4 with V6 or V8 power, luxurious top trims and real off-road hardware — and because these cars are assembled in the United States, the import maths can be favourable. USCar Trader acts purely as an independent broker for used examples; we neither hold stock nor add a margin to the vehicle.

Generations at a glance
The Grand Cherokee L arrived for the 2021 model year as part of the all-new WL-generation Grand Cherokee family. It rides on a stretched version of the same architecture, with a longer wheelbase to accommodate a usable third row and up to six or seven seats. The two-row WL Grand Cherokee followed for 2022, along with the 4xe plug-in hybrid — though the plug-in was offered on the standard-length car, not the L. Since launch, Jeep has refined trims and dropped the V8 from the range, so earlier build years are the ones to target if a HEMI is on your wishlist. This is a modern, technology-heavy vehicle with large digital displays and an available front-passenger screen on premium trims.
Powertrain lineup
The volume engine is the 3.6-litre Pentastar V6, rated at roughly 293 hp and 353 Nm, available with eTorque mild-hybrid assistance on some configurations. Early Grand Cherokee L models also offered the 5.7-litre HEMI V8 at around 357 hp and 520 Nm for buyers wanting stronger towing and effortless cruising; Jeep later discontinued it. Both engines drive through the ZF-based eight-speed automatic (the 850RE/8HP family), which is smooth and well proven. Rear-wheel drive is standard, with three four-wheel-drive systems available depending on trim: Quadra-Trac I, the two-speed Quadra-Trac II, and the torque-vectoring Quadra-Drive II with a rear limited-slip differential. Higher trims add the Quadra-Lift air suspension.
Trims in the US market
The Grand Cherokee L is a five-door, three-row SUV only. The US trim ladder runs Laredo, Altitude, Limited, Overland, Summit and Summit Reserve, climbing from cloth-and-basics to quilted leather, a panoramic roof, air suspension and the full driver-assistance suite. Overland and Summit are the sweet spot for buyers who want luxury and the more capable four-wheel-drive hardware. Second-row captain's chairs (six-seat) or a bench (seven-seat) are selectable depending on configuration.
The used market stateside
Because the Grand Cherokee L sells in high numbers across North America, the used market is broad and getting deeper as 2021–2022 lease returns circulate. Typical import candidates run from low-mileage nearly-new cars up to around 100,000 km. Well-optioned Overland and Summit examples are plentiful, and desirable colour and interior combinations that are rare in Europe are easy to find in the US. As always, we do not publish Euro prices — the figure depends on the specific car, its mileage and its condition.
Who should import one
This is the SUV for a buyer who needs three rows and genuine 4x4 capability but finds the full-size Wagoneers too large. It suits families who tow, cover long distances, or simply want an American SUV with presence and a V6 or V8 that European rivals rarely offer at the same price positioning. If your priority is a compact footprint or minimal running costs, it is the wrong tool — but for space, comfort and capability, few things match it.

How reliable is it?
As an early-production, technology-dense model, the WL Grand Cherokee L had its share of teething issues. The most common complaints centre on electronics and the Uconnect 5 infotainment system — occasional freezes, reboots or screen glitches, often resolved by software updates. The Quadra-Lift air suspension is excellent when working but is a long-term cost item to keep in mind on high-mileage cars, so check that it raises and lowers cleanly through all modes. On HEMI V8 cars, the well-known "HEMI tick" and MDS cylinder-deactivation lifter wear are worth listening for. Otherwise the Pentastar V6 and eight-speed automatic are mature, well-understood units. A pre-purchase inspection focused on the electronics and, where fitted, the air suspension will flag most Grand Cherokee L common problems.
What US models do differently
US cars use amber or red rear turn indicators depending on trim, headlights configured for right-hand traffic, and mph clusters that can usually be switched to km/h in the menu. Infotainment defaults to US navigation and units. Equipment packaging differs from any European-market Jeep, and the L is not sold in Europe in the same three-row form, so the car will be assessed on its own merits at inspection. These lighting and instrumentation points are the standard focus of the German approval process.
Seven steps to your import
The sequence is straightforward: choose a specific car and agree terms; verify the VIN and confirm the Detroit build to establish US origin; secure the payment in escrow; book ocean freight to a European port such as Bremerhaven; clear customs on arrival; present the vehicle for TÜV / individual approval (Einzelabnahme) with any needed modifications; and register locally. We manage each handover so the car keeps moving through the chain.
Customs, taxes and costs explained
Key point: duty depends on the plant of build; only a VIN check secures the 0% rate. Import VAT of 19% applies regardless.
The Grand Cherokee L is assembled in Detroit, Michigan, which means it typically qualifies as US-origin goods. Where that origin is provable via VIN and plant, the preferential 0% import duty under Regulations (EU) 2026/1455 and 2026/1461 (in force since 1 July 2026, direct transport, valid through 31 December 2029) often applies. We never describe this as guaranteed or duty-free — origin must be documented for each individual car. Separately and in every case, the 19% German import VAT (Einfuhrumsatzsteuer) applies on import; it is not affected by the origin rules. USCar Trader adds no margin to the vehicle.
German TÜV and registration
Typical work for a US Grand Cherokee L includes fitting or activating a rear fog lamp, confirming or adjusting headlights for right-hand traffic, and documenting the odometer and speed display in metric units. The vehicle then passes the standard technical inspection before registration. On a modern, well-built SUV these are routine steps.
The buyer checklist
Confirm the following before you buy: decode the VIN and verify the Detroit assembly for origin; obtain a Carfax or AutoCheck report for accident and title history; inspect the body and underside for corrosion or accident repair; check the Uconnect system and cameras fully function; on air-suspension cars, cycle all ride heights; on V8 cars, listen for lifter tick; and confirm the title is clean rather than salvage or rebuilt unless deliberately chosen.
Questions and answers
Is the Grand Cherokee L built in the USA?
Yes, it is assembled at Jeep's Detroit plant, which typically supports US-origin classification. We confirm this from the VIN for each car.
Can I still get a HEMI V8?
Only on earlier build years. Jeep dropped the 5.7-litre V8 from the range, so target the initial model years if the V8 matters to you.
Does US origin guarantee 0% duty?
No guarantee. US origin often enables the 0% preferential rate under the 2026 regulations, but only when the origin is provably documented for the specific car.
Does the 19% import VAT still apply?
Yes. The 19% German import VAT applies to every import regardless of the customs duty outcome.
How reliable is it?
Mechanically strong, with the main early complaints around infotainment software and long-term air-suspension upkeep. A good inspection catches most issues.
How many seats does it have?
Six with captain's chairs or seven with a second-row bench, depending on configuration.
Can it tow?
Yes. Properly equipped V8 cars are rated around 2,800 kg, and the V6 tows respectably too.
What mileage is typical for an import?
Anywhere from nearly new to around 100,000 km, since these are recent-generation vehicles.
