Model profile

Model history and generations

Model history and generations

The Silverado name replaced the C/K badge in 1999. The GMT800 (1999–2007) established the modern formula, followed by the GMT900 (2007–2013), which brought a stiffer frame and interior. The K2XX generation (2014–2018) introduced the EcoTec3 engine family and, in 2016, aluminium in the hood and doors.

Powertrain and equipment

Engines, drivetrain and trims

Engines and drivetrain

The volume engine is the 5.3-litre EcoTec3 V8 (L83/L84), producing roughly 355 hp, often with Dynamic Fuel Management cylinder deactivation on the newer L84.

Which trim makes sense

Cab choices are Regular, Double (extended) and Crew Cab, matched to Short, Standard or Long beds. Trim runs from work-focused WT and Custom through LT, RST and the off-road Trail Boss, up to the luxury-leaning LTZ and High Country.

Vehicle selection

North American market and suitability

Supply on the US market

Availability is excellent. Lease returns and fleet trucks flood the market at three to five years old, typically with 40,000–120,000 miles.

Who benefits from importing

A Silverado 1500 suits someone who tows a boat, trailer or horsebox, runs a business that needs a real bed, or simply wants an American full-size truck that is genuinely usable rather than a novelty.

Pre-purchase review

Model-specific inspection points

Known weak points and maintenance

The 5.3 and 6.2 EcoTec3 V8s are durable, but the Active Fuel Management / Dynamic Fuel Management cylinder-deactivation system is the headline weak point: lifter failure and, on some engines, oil consumption are the issues owners discuss most. Many buyers seek trucks with a documented AFM/DFM history or an installed disabler.

Germany and Europe

Differences, adaptation and registration

US and EU spec compared

US trucks run amber or red rear turn signals, often lack a rear fog lamp, and use miles per hour clusters.

TÜV, modifications and registration

Typical work includes adding a rear fog lamp, adapting rear lighting if amber indicators are required, confirming the speedometer, and documenting emissions data.

USCar Trader services

Inspection, purchase processing and escrow

As a buyer based in Germany, you do not have to inspect the vehicle yourself in the United States or Canada. Within the agreed scope, USCar Trader can coordinate document review, a separately commissioned on-site inspection and purchase processing.

  • Vehicle profile and history: The profile can show the VIN, US title status and available history records. No data source guarantees that every earlier event was reported.
  • Optional CARFAX report: Additional reported maintenance or service entries can be included. The report is not a complete service book or proof of every interval.
  • On-site inspection / USCT AutoCheck: USCar Trader can arrange a separately booked vehicle inspection. Agreed visible and accessible areas are documented. Road or functional tests require suitable access and seller approval; the visual review is not a lift inspection or workshop diagnosis.
  • Purchase processing and escrow: After approval, USCar Trader can coordinate seller contact, negotiation, contract and the escrow and import service. Fees, payment route and responsibilities are recorded in advance.
  • Recalls: Open safety recalls can be checked by VIN through the NHTSA recall search; they do not describe overall condition.

Covered inspection points are agreed in advance. An on-site inspection records condition at the appointment and is not a guarantee.

Next step: Before commissioning, USCar Trader and the customer agree which document, history, inspection and transaction checks suit the vehicle and are included in the service. This records what was actually checked.

Questions and answers

Common questions about importing this model

Does this vehicle automatically qualify for a 0% import-duty rate?

No, not automatically. A 0% EU import-duty rate may be available for a vehicle covered by Regulation (EU) 2026/1455 that has US origin and is imported directly into the EU. CETA may apply to a vehicle with preferential Canadian origin. Whether the requirements are met is assessed for the individual case. Please contact USCar Trader before purchase; we review the possible duty benefit and provide non-binding support. Import VAT and other costs are assessed separately.

How is import VAT treated when importing a Chevrolet Silverado 1500?

Import VAT and other taxes or costs are assessed separately under the applicable rules and the circumstances of the individual case. A blanket answer for every vehicle would not be reliable.

Which engine is best for import?

The 5.3 V8 is the practical all-rounder; the 6.2 V8 offers more performance, and the 3.0 Duramax suits high-mileage, economy-minded owners.

Is the 8-speed transmission a concern?

On some 2015–2018 trucks it shuddered; a fluid and software fix resolved many cases. Ask for evidence of the update.

What about the lifter/AFM problem?

It is the most-discussed V8 issue. Favour trucks with clear service history or an AFM disabler.

Container or RoRo shipping?

Container protects a clean, valuable truck; RoRo is cheaper and fine for working examples.

Will it pass TÜV?

Yes, with the usual lighting and documentation adjustments handled by a specialist before the appointment.

How can a specific Chevrolet Silverado 1500 be checked from Germany?

Available VIN, title and history information can be reviewed in the vehicle profile. USCar Trader can also arrange a separately booked on-site inspection within a scope agreed in advance.
