Model profile

Model history and generations

Model history and generations

RAM launched the ProMaster City for the 2015 model year to compete in the small-van segment against the Ford Transit Connect and Nissan NV200. It was essentially the European Fiat Doblò with RAM badging, US-market lighting and equipment, and a warranty and dealer network suited to American buyers. The van ran through to 2022 with only minor updates, when RAM discontinued it in North America.

Powertrain and equipment

Engines, drivetrain and trims

Engines and drivetrain

Every US ProMaster City used the same powertrain: a 2.4-litre Tigershark inline-four producing around 178 hp and 174 lb-ft, driving the front wheels through a nine-speed automatic (the 948TE).

Which trim makes sense

Two body configurations were offered: the Tradesman cargo van with a solid or windowed bulkhead and minimal rear glass, and the Wagon passenger version (marketed as SLT) with seating for up to five and full rear windows. Both used the same long-wheelbase body.

Vehicle selection

North American market and suitability

Supply on the US market

Many ProMaster Citys led hard fleet lives as delivery and trade vans, so the US used pool skews toward higher mileage and cosmetic wear.

Who benefits from importing

The ProMaster City is a niche import into Europe precisely because its Fiat Doblò sibling is already sold here.

Pre-purchase review

Model-specific inspection points

Known weak points and maintenance

The ProMaster City is generally durable in the way work vans need to be, but a few items recur. If expressly commissioned, feasible at the vehicle location and approved by the seller, USCar Trader can arrange a driving assessment to document observable shift quality, shudder, hesitation or driveline noise; service and repair records are reviewed separately.

Germany and Europe

Differences, adaptation and registration

US and EU spec compared

A US ProMaster City carries amber side markers, an mph speedometer, US headlight aim and no rear fog lamp — all standard registration items.

TÜV, modifications and registration

Typical work includes retrofitting a rear fog lamp, adapting the headlights and documenting the odometer. As a van, it may also face weight and payload documentation for its registration class.

USCar Trader services

Inspection, purchase processing and escrow

As a buyer based in Germany, you do not have to inspect the vehicle yourself in the United States or Canada. Within the agreed scope, USCar Trader can coordinate document review, a separately commissioned on-site inspection and purchase processing.

  • Vehicle profile and history: The profile can show the VIN, US title status and available history records. No data source guarantees that every earlier event was reported.
  • Optional CARFAX report: Additional reported maintenance or service entries can be included. The report is not a complete service book or proof of every interval.
  • On-site inspection / USCT AutoCheck: USCar Trader can arrange a separately booked vehicle inspection. Agreed visible and accessible areas are documented. Road or functional tests require suitable access and seller approval; the visual review is not a lift inspection or workshop diagnosis.
  • Purchase processing and escrow: After approval, USCar Trader can coordinate seller contact, negotiation, contract and the escrow and import service. Fees, payment route and responsibilities are recorded in advance.
  • Recalls: Open safety recalls can be checked by VIN through the NHTSA recall search; they do not describe overall condition.

Covered inspection points are agreed in advance. An on-site inspection records condition at the appointment and is not a guarantee.

Next step: Before commissioning, USCar Trader and the customer agree which document, history, inspection and transaction checks suit the vehicle and are included in the service. This records what was actually checked.

Questions and answers

Common questions about importing this model

When should USCar Trader be contacted before purchase?

Whether a duty benefit may be available for the specific vehicle is assessed individually. Please contact USCar Trader before purchase; we review the case and provide non-binding support through the process.

Does this vehicle automatically qualify for a 0% import-duty rate?

No, not automatically. A 0% EU import-duty rate may be available for a vehicle covered by Regulation (EU) 2026/1455 that has US origin and is imported directly into the EU. CETA may apply to a vehicle with preferential Canadian origin. Whether the requirements are met is assessed for the individual case. Please contact USCar Trader before purchase; we review the possible duty benefit and provide non-binding support. Import VAT and other costs are assessed separately.

How is import VAT treated when importing a RAM Promaster City?

Import VAT and other taxes or costs are assessed separately under the applicable rules and the circumstances of the individual case. A blanket answer for every vehicle would not be reliable.

What engine does it use?

A single 2.4-litre Tigershark petrol four of about 178 hp with a nine-speed automatic; no diesel or manual was offered in the US.

What is the difference between Tradesman and Wagon?

Tradesman is the cargo van; Wagon is the passenger version with rear seating and windows.

What should I watch out for?

Nine-speed transmission shift quality, 2.4 engine oil consumption, and heavy-use wear from fleet life.

Why import one when the Doblò is sold in Europe?

It is a niche choice — for the specific US RAM version or a collector — since the underlying van is already available here.

Can USCar Trader handle the process?

Yes. As an independent broker we manage sourcing, escrow, freight, customs and TÜV coordination.
