Ram Ram 2500 Pickup

Importing a used RAM 2500 from the USA

The RAM 2500 is a three-quarter-ton heavy-duty pickup built for serious work: towing large trailers, hauling heavy payloads and covering long distances with a big diesel or gas V8 up front. Nothing in the European market really matches its combination of size, torque and towing muscle, which is exactly why buyers import one. Whether you need a genuine tow rig for a horse trailer, a car transporter or a large caravan, or you simply want the presence and capability of a US heavy-duty truck, importing a used RAM 2500 from the USA opens up a deep market of well-specified trucks. USCar Trader manages the purchase and import as an independent broker — no dealer margin, no manufacturer partnership, just sourcing, verification and logistics.

From launch to today

Two generations dominate the used import scene. The fourth generation (2010–2018, chassis DS/D2, sold under the standalone RAM brand from 2011) established the modern look and offered the coil-sprung and, on 2500s, a comfortable link-coil rear suspension that improved ride quality over rivals. The fifth generation (2019 onward, DT) brought a much more refined interior with the huge 12-inch portrait touchscreen on higher trims, improved noise isolation and updated powertrains. Both generations were sold as heavy-duty workhorses, but the fifth generation moved the interior and technology substantially upmarket.

Engines and drivetrain in detail

The RAM 2500 is defined by its two engines. The gasoline option is the 6.4-litre HEMI V8, producing around 410 hp and 429 lb-ft, mated to an eight-speed automatic — strong, simple and cheaper to buy. The headline engine is the 6.7-litre Cummins turbodiesel inline-six, a legendary heavy-duty unit. Depending on year and tune it delivers roughly 350–420 hp but, more importantly, up to about 1,000 lb-ft of torque in high-output form, paired with the six-speed 68RFE automatic or the heavier-duty Aisin AS69RC on high-output diesels. Most import candidates are four-wheel drive with a two-speed transfer case, though rear-drive trucks exist. The Cummins is prized for longevity and pulling power, which is why diesel 2500s command a premium.

Trim levels and variants

US 2500s come in a wide range: Tradesman and Big Horn at the working end, then Laramie, Laramie Longhorn and the leather-lined Limited at the top, plus the off-road-oriented Power Wagon (gas-only, with a locking front differential and winch). Cab choices are Regular, Crew and the large Mega Cab, with 6-foot-4 or 8-foot beds. Higher trims are genuinely luxurious — ventilated leather seats, a premium sound system, adaptive cruise and a vast touchscreen — while retaining full towing capability. Because American buyers option these trucks heavily, imported examples are often lavishly equipped.

Used availability in the USA

Heavy-duty trucks are everywhere in the US, and the 2500 used pool is large and varied. Many were used for towing and see higher mileage than a typical car — diesels frequently cross 100,000 miles while still having plenty of life left. Fleet and ranch trucks may show hard use, while lightly used personal trucks command more. Cars from dry southern and western states are preferable for a clean underbody. Given the size and value of these trucks, careful history and mechanical checks are especially worthwhile.

When importing makes sense

The RAM 2500 suits anyone who genuinely needs heavy-duty towing and hauling: horse and livestock owners, boat and caravan owners, motorsport teams, or businesses moving heavy loads. It also appeals to enthusiasts who want the presence of a full-size American truck. Be realistic about running it in Europe — width, length, fuel use and parking are all substantial — but for real work capability, few things compete.

Reliability and common problems

The Cummins engine itself is famously durable, but the surrounding systems have known weak points. The Bosch CP4.2 high-pressure fuel pump fitted to 2019-onward diesels has a reputation for catastrophic failure that can contaminate the entire fuel system — a documented history and awareness of this risk are essential, and some owners fit protective measures. Older diesels can suffer the notorious 'death wobble', a violent front-end oscillation usually traced to worn steering and suspension components (track bar, ball joints); check these carefully. Exhaust manifold bolts can crack on the diesel, and emissions hardware (DPF, EGR, DEF/AdBlue) requires proper maintenance — a clogged system is expensive. The gas 6.4 HEMI is simpler but thirstier and can see lifter and exhaust-manifold issues. As with any hard-worked truck, service records and a mechanical inspection are worth their weight.

How US versions differ

Beyond the obvious size, US 2500s use headlights for right-hand traffic, generally lack a rear fog lamp, and read in mph. Diesel trucks run a DEF/AdBlue system that must be kept topped up. For registration in Germany these large trucks may face specific considerations around weight class, driving licence category and how they are classified (some heavy pickups fall outside the ordinary passenger-car category). Tyres, lighting and marker lamps typically need attention. Equipment on higher US trims is generous and largely retained after import.

From US purchase to registration

First select the exact truck — engine, cab, bed, trim and 4x4 status. A VIN and origin check then confirms the build plant and pulls the history. Payment runs through a secure escrow-style arrangement. Given the size, ocean freight is usually by container (or RoRo where suitable) to a European port, followed by customs clearance, TÜV and individual approval (Einzelabnahme) with any required modifications, and finally registration. Large trucks add complexity at the approval and registration stage, and USCar Trader coordinates the process throughout.

Costs, duty and taxes at a glance

Bottom line: what matters is the factory shown by the VIN – proven US origin unlocks 0% duty. The 19% import VAT always applies.

Two separate charges apply. The EU import duty can be 0% under Regulations (EU) 2026/1455 and 2026/1461 (in force since 1 July 2026, direct transport, until 31 December 2029) — but only where US origin is provably established from the VIN and plant code. This is a critical caveat for the RAM 2500: many heavy-duty RAM trucks are assembled in Mexico rather than the United States, in which case a US-origin claim will not hold and the standard duty rate applies. Origin must be checked per truck, and we never promise 'duty-free'. Separately and always, the 19% German import VAT (Einfuhrumsatzsteuer) is due on the customs value plus freight, regardless of origin. USCar Trader takes no margin on the vehicle.

TÜV, approval and license plates

Typical work includes adapting headlights for right-hand traffic, fitting a rear fog lamp, and ensuring the speedometer displays km/h. The odometer reading is converted from miles and documented. Heavy pickups can require extra attention to weight ratings, lighting and, in some cases, the appropriate registration and licence class. After individual approval, the paperwork allows registration at your local authority.

Pre-purchase checklist

  • Decode the VIN to confirm engine, drivetrain, cab/bed and the build plant (US vs. Mexico for duty purposes).
  • On 2019+ diesels, investigate the CP4 fuel pump history and any protective measures.
  • Inspect the front-end steering components for 'death wobble' wear.
  • Check the DPF/EGR/DEF emissions system and service records on diesels.
  • Pull a Carfax or AutoCheck report for accidents, title brands and odometer consistency.
  • Look for rust and frame condition, favouring dry-state trucks.
  • Confirm a clean (non-salvage) title unless knowingly buying a project.

Import FAQ

Why import a used RAM 2500 from the USA?

Because nothing in Europe matches its heavy-duty towing and hauling capability, and the US used market offers a deep choice of well-equipped diesel and gas trucks. The value depends on the individual truck and the total landed cost including VAT.

Will a RAM 2500 qualify for 0% EU import duty?

Only with proven US origin from the VIN and plant code. Many RAM heavy-duty trucks are built in Mexico, in which case the standard duty applies. Origin must be verified per truck and is never guaranteed.

Is the 19% import VAT always due?

Yes. The German import VAT of 19% applies on import regardless of origin, on the customs value plus freight.

Cummins diesel or 6.4 HEMI gas?

The Cummins offers far more torque and better durability for heavy towing but costs more and demands emissions-system care; the 6.4 HEMI is cheaper and simpler but thirstier.

What is the CP4 fuel pump problem?

The high-pressure fuel pump on 2019+ diesels can fail and contaminate the fuel system. Check its history; some owners fit protective devices or bypass kits.

Can I register a RAM 2500 easily in Germany?

It is possible but adds complexity around weight class, lighting and licence category, which the individual approval process addresses. Plan for these steps.

What mileage is acceptable on a diesel 2500?

Cummins diesels routinely exceed 100,000 miles with life left, provided the maintenance and emissions systems were properly cared for.

Is USCar Trader a dealer?

No. We are an independent broker for used US vehicles, without dealer margin or manufacturer partnership.
