Mitsubishi Outlander Sport
Importing a used Mitsubishi Outlander Sport from the USA
The Mitsubishi Outlander Sport is the compact crossover many Europeans know as the ASX or RVR — a small, practical SUV that Mitsubishi sold in the United States for well over a decade. Its long production run and steady US sales create a broad used pool, which is why buyers occasionally ask us to help import a used Mitsubishi Outlander Sport from the USA. USCar Trader is an independent broker of used vehicles only: we source from US sellers, check the VIN and build origin, and manage shipping and homologation without taking a dealer margin on the car.
Because this model is closely related to versions already familiar in Europe, an import can be a sensible way to find a specific colour, trim or condition. Below is the model story, the powertrains you will actually meet, and the import detail that matters.

Generations at a glance
The Outlander Sport launched for the 2011 model year on Mitsubishi's GS platform, sharing much with the ASX/RVR sold elsewhere. Rather than a clean generational break, it received a series of facelifts — notably in 2013, a larger visual refresh in 2016 that brought the "Dynamic Shield" front end, and further updates around 2020 — while the underlying architecture stayed the same throughout. That long, evolutionary life means later cars look considerably more modern than early ones, even though the bones are shared. Most US-market cars were built in Japan (Okazaki), with some earlier assembly at Mitsubishi's Normal, Illinois plant — an origin point that matters for customs, as explained below.
Powertrain lineup
Two petrol four-cylinders cover the range. The 2.0-litre 4B11 MIVEC produces around 148 hp and is the volume engine; the larger 2.4-litre 4B12 MIVEC (around 168 hp) appeared on higher trims for a bit more urge. Early cars offered a five-speed manual, but the vast majority use Mitsubishi's CVT (continuously variable transmission). Buyers can choose front-wheel drive or the electronically controlled All-Wheel Control (AWC) system with a lock mode for added traction. This is a modest, efficiency-oriented drivetrain rather than a performance one — sensible for city and commuter use.
Trims in the US market
The body is a single five-door compact crossover. US trims evolved over the years through ES, SE, SEL, LE and the top GT, with equipment ranging from steel wheels and cloth on base cars to alloy wheels, a panoramic glass roof, heated leather, a touchscreen and a Rockford Fosgate audio option higher up. Because the model ran so long, the exact feature set depends heavily on model year, so match the year and trim to the equipment you want.
The used market stateside
Supply is reasonable rather than enormous — Mitsubishi is a smaller player in the States, but the Outlander Sport sold consistently as an affordable crossover, so late-model, low-to-moderate-mileage cars are readily found. Ex-fleet and former lease examples circulate alongside private sales. Condition on southern and western cars is typically good; northern cars warrant an underbody rust check. As always, no European prices are shown here — use live listings for current market values.
Who should import one
A used Outlander Sport suits buyers who want a small, easy-to-park crossover with the option of all-wheel traction and low running costs. It is not fast and the CVT is tuned for economy over engagement, so it best fits city drivers, commuters and buyers after a specific configuration. Enthusiasts chasing power should look elsewhere in the range.

How reliable is it?
The Outlander Sport is generally durable, helped by simple, long-established engines, but the CVT is the component to scrutinise. Neglected fluid changes or hard use can lead to CVT overheating, judder or, in worst cases, failure, so insist on evidence of transmission servicing and take a thorough test drive under load. The 2.0-litre engine is modestly powered, which means it works hard when fully loaded. Owners also report elevated road and engine noise, some infotainment quirks on older units, and ordinary wear items — brakes, suspension bushings — on higher-mileage cars. The AWC system is robust but should be checked for correct engagement. On the whole this is a low-drama vehicle if the CVT has been maintained.
What US models do differently
US cars have amber front side markers, mph-priority instruments, and typically no rear fog lamp — all TÜV items. Trim names and equipment bundles differ from the European ASX, and the audio unit is set to North American bands without DAB. Mechanically the car is essentially the same as the European ASX/RVR, which helps with parts and servicing, and it is left-hand drive as standard for straightforward German registration.
Seven steps to your import
The sequence is: select the car → verify the VIN and confirm the assembly plant and origin → fund via escrow → book ocean freight from a US port → clear German customs → present for TÜV individual approval (§21) with the required lighting and fog-lamp changes → register at the Zulassungsstelle. Because the model is closely related to a European type, approval is generally uncomplicated once the physical modifications are made.
Customs, taxes and costs explained
Remember: no origin proof, no 0% duty – and 19% German import VAT is due on every import.
Two separate charges, stated plainly. Import duty: since 1 July 2026, Regulations (EU) 2026/1455 and 2026/1461 allow a 0% rate for vehicles of provable US origin shipped directly from the USA, valid until 31 December 2029. This is the crucial point for the Outlander Sport: most US cars were built in Japan, so their VIN generally does not establish US origin and the 0% rate typically will not apply — only cars traceable to the Normal, Illinois plant could. We confirm the plant from the VIN and never promise "duty-free"; the applicable rate follows the actual origin. Import VAT: German Einfuhrumsatzsteuer of 19% always applies, on the customs value, regardless of origin. We add no margin to either.
German TÜV and registration
Plan for European-approved headlights or a beam conversion, a retrofitted rear fog lamp, and a km/h speed display. The odometer is documented and cross-checked against the Carfax/AutoCheck record during approval. Once the TÜV certificate is issued, registration proceeds as for any used import.
The buyer checklist
Before buying, verify: (1) the VIN matches all documents and confirm the assembly plant (Japan vs Illinois); (2) a clean Carfax/AutoCheck history free of salvage, flood or lemon branding; (3) documented CVT fluid servicing and smooth operation on test; (4) the underbody for salt-belt rust; (5) correct AWC engagement if all-wheel drive; (6) a clean, transferable US title; and (7) tyre, brake and bushing condition on higher-mileage cars.
Questions and answers
Is the Outlander Sport the same as the European ASX?
Essentially yes — it is sold as the ASX or RVR in Europe and other markets. The North American "Outlander Sport" shares the platform and engines, with different trim names and equipment.
Does a US Outlander Sport qualify for 0% EU import duty?
Usually not, because most US cars are built in Japan and their VIN does not establish US origin. We check the plant from the VIN before you commit and never guarantee duty-free.
Is the 19% import VAT always payable?
Yes. German import VAT of 19% applies to every imported vehicle regardless of origin, calculated on the customs value.
What is the main reliability concern?
The CVT. Confirm documented fluid changes and test for judder or overheating under load; a well-maintained CVT is generally reliable.
Front-wheel drive or All-Wheel Control?
AWC adds traction for winter and light off-road use; FWD is lighter and slightly more economical. Choose by climate and use.
How is the car shipped from the USA?
By container or roll-on/roll-off from a US port, with escrow protecting your funds until the car is verified and loaded.
Which model year is best to import?
Later 2016-and-newer cars have the updated styling and equipment while keeping the proven mechanicals, making them the most rounded choice.
