Model profile
There have been three Countryman generations. The first, the R60 (2010–2016), was the original Countryman and was assembled by Magna Steyr in Austria; it offered Cooper, Cooper S and the hot John Cooper Works, plus the ALL4 all-wheel-drive option.
Powertrain and equipment
US Countryman engines followed the mainstream MINI line-up. The R60 used 1.6-litre petrol fours, turbocharged in the Cooper S and JCW (up to around 211 hp in the JCW).
The Countryman is a five-door crossover throughout. US trims broadly track the engine tiers: Cooper, Cooper S and John Cooper Works, with the Cooper SE plug-in hybrid on the F60.

The American used pool spans all three generations, with the F60 (2017–2023) the most common right now.
An imported Countryman suits a buyer who wants a specific US-spec configuration, a particularly clean car, or a performance JCW or SE hybrid at a competitive figure.

Pre-purchase review
Countryman reliability depends heavily on the generation. The R60's 1.6-litre "Prince" engine (the N18 in the Cooper S) is known for timing-chain tensioner wear, carbon build-up on the intake valves, turbocharger issues and oil leaks from the valve-cover gasket and oil-filter housing; a rattling cold start on these cars is a warning sign.
Germany and Europe
Because the Countryman is sold in Europe and built there, TÜV familiarity and parts availability are excellent.
Common changes for approval are the usual ones: European headlights or a corrected beam pattern, a working rear fog lamp, indicator compliance and a km/h speedometer.

The F60 (2017–2023) is the most common and generally more robust than the earlier R60. The R60 needs closer scrutiny of its 1.6-litre engine.
On the R60, timing-chain tensioners, carbon build-up and oil leaks. On the F60, watch oil consumption and the water pump. Run-flat tyres are firm and pricey across the range.
Yes. The ALL4 system was optional across much of the range and is worth seeking out for winter traction.
Yes. The Countryman is sold and built in Europe, so parts and servicing are widely available.
