Model history and generations

Model history and generations

The iX (internal code i20) launched for the 2022 model year as an all-new, purpose-built electric SUV rather than a converted combustion model. It introduced BMW's fifth-generation eDrive technology and a carbon-fibre-reinforced-plastic structure BMW calls the Carbon Cage. In the US the range opened with the xDrive40 and xDrive50, joined by the performance M60.

Powertrain and equipment

Engines, drivetrain and trims

Engines and drivetrain

Every iX is dual-motor with electric all-wheel drive. The xDrive40 pairs a usable battery of roughly 71 kWh with around 322 hp; the xDrive50 steps up to roughly 105 kWh usable and about 516 hp, which is the volume seller and the one most buyers target for its range.

Which trim makes sense

The iX is a five-door, five-seat mid-to-large SUV with a distinctive kidney-grille panel that houses sensors rather than airflow.

Vehicle selection

North American market and suitability

Supply on the US market

Availability has improved markedly. Typical used iX cars span 2022 through recent model years, with mileage commonly from around 10,000 to 50,000 miles on one-owner and lease-return cars.

Who benefits from importing

The iX suits a buyer who wants a spacious, quiet, long-range electric SUV with a genuinely luxurious cabin and strong real-world range from the larger battery.

Pre-purchase review

Model-specific inspection points

Known weak points and maintenance

The iX is broadly solid, but a few areas come up in US ownership reports. Early cars had occasional glitches with the iDrive 8 software and the curved display, generally resolved by updates; confirm the car is on current firmware. Some owners noted 12-volt battery issues and sporadic charging-session errors, often traced to cabling or software rather than the high-voltage pack.

Germany and Europe

Differences, adaptation and registration

US and EU spec compared

The most important difference is the charge port: US iX cars use CCS1, whereas European rapid chargers use CCS2.

TUEV, modifications and registration

Typical items are adapting the headlights to European requirements, fitting or activating a rear fog lamp, and confirming instrument and charging function.

USCar Trader services

Inspection, purchase processing and escrow

As a buyer based in Germany, you do not have to inspect the vehicle yourself in the United States or Canada. Within the agreed scope, USCar Trader can coordinate document review, a separately commissioned on-site inspection and purchase processing.

  • Vehicle profile and history: The profile can show the VIN, US title status and available history records. No data source guarantees that every earlier event was reported.
  • Optional CARFAX report: Additional reported maintenance or service entries can be included. The report is not a complete service book or proof of every interval.
  • On-site inspection / USCT AutoCheck: USCar Trader can arrange a separately booked vehicle inspection. Agreed visible and accessible areas are documented. Road or functional tests require suitable access and seller approval; the visual review is not a lift inspection or workshop diagnosis.
  • Purchase processing and escrow: After approval, USCar Trader can coordinate seller contact, negotiation, contract and the escrow and import service. Fees, payment route and responsibilities are recorded in advance.
  • Recalls: Open safety recalls can be checked by VIN through the NHTSA recall search; they do not describe overall condition.

Covered inspection points are agreed in advance. An on-site inspection records condition at the appointment and is not a guarantee.

Next step: Before commissioning, USCar Trader and the customer agree which document, history, inspection and transaction checks suit the vehicle and are included in the service. This records what was actually checked.

Questions and answers

Common questions about importing this model

Can I fast-charge a US BMW iX in Europe?

US cars use CCS1 while Europe uses CCS2. The charging approach is planned as part of import preparation so the car works with European infrastructure.

Does this vehicle automatically qualify for a 0% import-duty rate?

No, not automatically. A 0% EU import-duty rate may be available for a vehicle covered by Regulation (EU) 2026/1455 that has US origin and is imported directly into the EU. CETA may apply to a vehicle with preferential Canadian origin. Whether the requirements are met is assessed for the individual case. Please contact USCar Trader before purchase; we review the possible duty benefit and provide non-binding support. Import VAT and other costs are assessed separately.

Which iX has the best range?

The xDrive50 with its roughly 105 kWh usable battery is the long-range choice and the most sought-after used version.

How reliable is the BMW iX?

Generally solid, with early software quirks resolved by updates. Tyre and battery health are the main practical concerns.

What mileage is normal on a used iX?

Common used cars run from around 10,000 to 50,000 miles, mostly one-owner and lease returns.

Will the iX need changes for TUEV?

Usually lighting adaptation and a rear fog lamp, plus function checks. These are routine.

Is battery degradation a concern on used iX cars?

It varies with how the car was charged. A documented state-of-health readout is the best way to judge an individual car.

How can a specific BMW iX be checked from Germany?

Available VIN, title and history information can be reviewed in the vehicle profile. USCar Trader can also arrange a separately booked on-site inspection within a scope agreed in advance.
