Model profile
The iX (internal code i20) launched for the 2022 model year as an all-new, purpose-built electric SUV rather than a converted combustion model. It introduced BMW's fifth-generation eDrive technology and a carbon-fibre-reinforced-plastic structure BMW calls the Carbon Cage. In the US the range opened with the xDrive40 and xDrive50, joined by the performance M60.
Powertrain and equipment
Every iX is dual-motor with electric all-wheel drive. The xDrive40 pairs a usable battery of roughly 71 kWh with around 322 hp; the xDrive50 steps up to roughly 105 kWh usable and about 516 hp, which is the volume seller and the one most buyers target for its range.

Pre-purchase review
The iX is broadly solid, but a few areas come up in US ownership reports. Early cars had occasional glitches with the iDrive 8 software and the curved display, generally resolved by updates; confirm the car is on current firmware. Some owners noted 12-volt battery issues and sporadic charging-session errors, often traced to cabling or software rather than the high-voltage pack.
Germany and Europe
The most important difference is the charge port: US iX cars use CCS1, whereas European rapid chargers use CCS2.
Typical items are adapting the headlights to European requirements, fitting or activating a rear fog lamp, and confirming instrument and charging function.
