BMW X7

Importing a used BMW X7 from the USA

The X7 is BMW's largest and most luxurious SUV, a full-size three-row flagship that competes with the Mercedes GLS and Range Rover. Like the X5 and X6, it is manufactured at BMW's Spartanburg plant in South Carolina, so many US-market X7s are US-built, a point that can help with customs origin, though it is always the specific VIN and plant code that decide, not the brand. As an independent broker, USCar Trader sources a chosen used X7 in the USA and manages its move to Germany or the wider EU as a used vehicle.

From launch to today

The X7 arrived for the 2019 model year as the G07, BMW's first vehicle in this class. A significant mid-cycle refresh (the "LCI") landed for 2023, bringing split-headlight styling, a curved display running iDrive 8, mild-hybrid 48-volt assistance across the main engines and interior updates. Because the X7 is a relatively recent model, the used pool is concentrated in low-to-moderate mileage cars, many still well within their service life.

Engines and drivetrain in detail

US X7s are petrol. The xDrive40i uses a 3.0-litre turbocharged straight-six (roughly 335-375 hp with mild-hybrid assist), while the M60i (formerly M50i) fits a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 of around 523 hp. The range-topping ALPINA XB7 pushes the V8 beyond 600 hp. All use the ZF eight-speed automatic and xDrive all-wheel drive, and most cars ride on adaptive air suspension at both axles as standard, which contributes to the X7's limousine-like ride.

Trim levels and variants

The X7 is a five-door SUV offered with six seats (two second-row captain's chairs) or seven seats (a second-row bench). US cars are typically loaded, with common features including the Panoramic Sky Lounge roof, soft-close doors, four-zone climate, ventilated and massaging front seats, premium Harman Kardon or Bowers & Wilkins audio, and the Off-Road or M Sport packages. It is a genuine luxury SUV in specification.

Used availability in the USA

Supply is steady and specifications are generous, which is part of the appeal of a US import. Realistic candidates are 2020-2023 cars with 20,000 to 70,000 miles. Given the price bracket, favour cars with complete BMW service history and, ideally, a clean single-owner background. Southern-state cars avoid road salt, which matters for a large, complex vehicle.

When importing makes sense

The X7 fits buyers who need three rows of genuine space with flagship comfort and BMW driving manners, families who want to carry six or seven in quiet luxury, and anyone who likes that a US-built BMW returns to Europe. If a sleeker profile matters more than the third row, the X6 is the alternative; for outright space and presence, the X7 leads BMW's SUV range.

Reliability and common problems

The X7 is newer, so the fleet is generally in good health, but the underlying hardware is shared with the X5 and X6 and the same watch points apply. On the N63/S68 V8, monitor for oil leaks, cooling components and turbo condition, and confirm any BMW campaigns were completed. The B58 straight-six is well regarded but check the oil filter housing gasket and cooling system. The dual-axle air suspension is a defining feature and a future cost item, so test that all ride heights and the load-levelling work correctly. The panoramic roof drains, electric coolant pump and iDrive electronics are worth checking. As with any large used BMW, a full service history and a pre-purchase inspection are the best guard against X7 common problems.

How US versions differ

US cars use mph instruments, US headlamp specification, often amber rear indicators, and lack a factory rear fog lamp. Certain assistance and connectivity features are region-coded and may need adjustment. The Spartanburg build helps the origin case, but the VIN is always verified.

From US purchase to registration

The route runs from selecting a specific X7, to a VIN and origin check confirming the US build, a secure escrow payment, ocean freight, EU customs clearance, a TUEV inspection with individual approval, and German registration. We manage each handover so vehicle and paperwork stay aligned.

Costs, duty and taxes at a glance

In short: the 0% duty rate applies only with documented US origin (VIN/plant) – German import VAT of 19% is always due.

Keep the two items separate. EU import duty may be 0% under Regulations (EU) 2026/1455 and 2026/1461, in force from 1 July 2026 until 31 December 2029, but only with proven US origin and direct transport. The X7's Spartanburg assembly often supports eligibility, yet we confirm each car's VIN and plant code rather than promise a rate. Separately, the 19% German import VAT (Einfuhrumsatzsteuer) always applies to the customs value.

TÜV, approval and license plates

Typical approval work includes headlamp beam adaptation or European lamps, adding a rear fog lamp, side marker handling, a correct-reading speedometer and odometer handling, and sometimes coding so European lighting functions properly. Wheel and tyre specifications are checked and recorded in the German papers.

Pre-purchase checklist

  • Decode the VIN to confirm the Spartanburg build and 0% duty eligibility.
  • Order a Carfax or AutoCheck history for accidents, title and odometer.
  • Demand complete BMW service records, especially on V8 cars.
  • Test the air suspension at all heights and check for leaks.
  • Inspect the panoramic roof, cooling system and for oil seepage.
  • Confirm a clean, non-salvage title.
  • Commission a professional pre-purchase inspection before paying.

Import FAQ

Is a used BMW X7 eligible for 0% EU duty?

Often, because the X7 is built in Spartanburg, USA, but only when the VIN proves origin and the car ships directly. We verify the plant code first.

Does the 19% import VAT still apply?

Yes. The German Einfuhrumsatzsteuer of 19% applies to every imported vehicle on its customs value.

Six seats or seven?

Six-seat cars have two captain's chairs and easier third-row access; seven-seat cars add a middle bench for one more passenger. Choose by how you carry people.

xDrive40i or M60i?

The six-cylinder 40i is efficient and refined and suits most buyers; the V8 M60i adds performance and cost. Both drive superbly.

Is the air suspension a concern?

It is excellent when working but is a future maintenance item, so test it thoroughly and value cars with a clean history.

How does the X7 compare to the X5?

The X7 is larger, adds a usable third row and rides even more softly; the X5 is more compact and agile.

How long does import take?

Usually several weeks after purchase, limited by shipping schedules and the TUEV appointment.

Are you the seller?

No. We act only as an independent intermediary broker; you remain the buyer and owner throughout.
